Adult ails display taste avoidance and disgust reactions when stimulated with gustatory stimuli previously paired with aversive agents such as lithium chloride (LiCl) By the second postnatal week of life, preweanling rats also display specific behaviors in response to a tastant conditioned stimulus (CS) that predicts LICI-induced malaise The present study compared conditioned disgust reactions induced by LiCl or ethanol (EtOH) in preweanling rats In Experiment I we determined doses of ethanol and LiCl that exert similar levels of conditioned taste avoidance. After having equated drug dosage in terms of conditioned taste avoidance, 13-day-old rats were given a single pairing of a novel taste (saccharin) and either LiCl or ethanol (2 5 g/kg, Experiment 2) Saccharin intake and emission of disgust reactions were assessed 24 and 48 hr after training Pups given paired presentations of saccharin and the aversive agents (ethanol or LiCl consumed less saccharin during the first testing clay than controls These pups also showed more aversive behavioral reactions to the gustatory CS than controls. Specifically, increased amounts of grooming, general activity, head shaking. and wall climbing as well as reduced mouthing were observed in response to the CS Conditioned aversive reactions but not taste avoidance were still evident on the second testing day In conclusion, a taste CS paired with postabsorptive effects of EtOH and LiCl elicited a similar pattern of conditioned rejection reactions in preweanling rats These results suggest that similar mechanisms may be underlying CTAs induced by LiCl and a relatively high EtOH dose (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Dev. From binge eating to binge drinking: A new and robust paradigm for assessing binge ethanol self-administration in male rats

Leandro Ruiz-Leyva, Ana Vazquez-Agredos, Ana M. Jimenez-Garcia, Olga Lopez-Guarnido, Antonio Pla, Ricardo Marcos Pautassi, Ignacio Moron Henche, Cruz Miguel Cendan

Summary: The present study validates a novel model of voluntary ethanol consumption in male Wistar rats, in which ethanol access follows binge eating, and demonstrates a significant increase in ethanol consumption after binge eating compared to control eating. This model shows remarkable potential for research on different stages of alcohol addiction and assessing interactions between alcohol consumption and other addictive-like behaviors.

Rewarding and Antidepressant Properties of Ketamine and Ethanol: Effects on the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor and TrkB and p75NTR Receptors

Marcos Brandao Conto, Ricardo Marcos Pautassi, Rosana Camarini

Summary: There is a high co-occurrence between depression and alcohol use disorder. Subanesthetic doses of ketamine have short-acting and long-lasting antidepressant effects. This study investigated the interaction between ketamine-induced antidepressant effects and ethanol's rewarding effects, as well as the effect of ethanol on the antidepressant actions of ketamine. The expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptors TrkB and p75NTR in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were examined. The findings suggest that ethanol can interfere with the antidepressant effects of ketamine and highlight potential interactions between ethanol and ketamine that may undermine ketamine's putative antidepressant effects.

Summary: The study explored the effects of sigma-1 receptors (S1-R) activation on ethanol-induced conditioned taste aversion (CTA) in early adolescence and terminal adolescence/emerging adulthood in female Wistar rats. The results showed that S1-R activation attenuated the learning of ethanol-induced CTA at terminal adolescence but not at early adolescence. Additionally, S1-R activation did not significantly affect binge-like ethanol intake in terminal adolescents.

The functional and molecular effects of problematic alcohol consumption on skeletal muscle: a focus on athletic performance

Constanza Caceres-Ayala, Ricardo M. Pautassi, Maria Jose Acuna, Waldo Cerpa, Daniela L. Rebolledo

Summary: Alcohol consumption has negative effects on skeletal muscle function and structure, especially in the case of binge drinking. Men are more affected than women. Alcohol can impair muscle recovery after exercise, potentially through an imbalance between anabolic and catabolic pathways, reduced regeneration, increased inflammation and fibrosis, and deficiencies in energy balance and mitochondrial function.

Eating-to-Cope Motives and Uncontrolled Eating as Mediators Between Negative Emotional States and Food Addiction Among Argentinean Young Adults

Macarena Soledad Fernandez, Angelina Pilatti, Ricardo Marcos Pautassi

Summary: Negative emotional states are likely to contribute to the development of food addiction. The association between negative emotional states and food addiction symptoms may be mediated by altered eating behaviors or by eating-to-cope motives. This study found that stress and depression symptoms were indirectly associated with food addiction symptoms through uncontrolled eating and eating-to-cope motives.

Summary: Earlier age of alcohol use initiation has been consistently associated with later problematic alcohol use. It is unclear which aspect of early initiation is key for risk assessment and whether cultural differences exist. This study examined the relationships between Age of First Use (AFU) and Age of Habitual Use (AHU) on alcohol use behaviors across seven countries. Results show that AFU has a stronger association with drinking frequency, while AHU is more strongly associated with AUDIT scores and negative consequences. Country was found to moderate the relationships between age variables and drinking behaviors.

A review on the reciprocal interactions between neuroinflammatory processes and substance use and misuse, with a focus on alcohol misuse

Anny Gano, Terrence Deak, Ricardo Marcos Pautassi

Summary: In the past decade, neuroinflammatory processes have been found to play a crucial role in substance use disorders. Initially, it was believed that neuroinflammation resulting from prolonged substance misuse contributed to long-term neuropathological consequences. However, it is now understood that the interactions between neuroinflammatory processes and alcohol and drug intake are reciprocal, leading to a vicious cycle that exacerbates the neuropathological effects of drug misuse.
