Preschool-aged children (n = 274) were examined in the laboratory to assess behavioral and cortisol responses to nonsocial and social threat. Parents also responded to scales on the Children's Behavior Questionnaire reflecting exuberant approach to novel/risky activities (reversed scored) and shyness. Multi-method measures of Nonsocial and Social Inhibition were computed. parents and children were observed engaging in a series of interactive tasks. and the Emotional. Availability scales were scored for parental sensitivity, nonintrusiveness, non-hostility, and structing. These scores were factored to yield one measure of Parenting Quality Analyses revealed that Nonsocial and Social Inhibition could be distinguished and that associations with cortisol response were stressor specific. Moderation analyses revealed that parenting quality buffered cortisol elevations for extremely socially, but not nonsocially inhibited children. These findings are consistent with evidence that sensitive, supportive parenting is an important buffer of the HPA axis response to threat in infants and toddlers, and extends this finding to the preschool period. Summary: The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) is a widely used protocol for activating stress responses, but the COVID-19 pandemic has made in-person assessments difficult. This study validated a completely remote, online version of the TSST for children, showing that it is consistent with in-person responses and can effectively assess reactivity of the HPA axis and other stress systems in a remote environment.

Summary: This study examined the impact of early life adversity on levels of proinflammatory cytokines and cellular cytokine responses in youth. It found that PI youth showed a larger inflammatory response than NA youth under stimulation with PMA/IO. Sex differences were also observed in circulating levels of IL-6 and TNF alpha.

Cortisol Reactivity and Socially Anxious Behavior in Previously Institutionalized Youth

Summary: This study found that greater cortisol reactivity in previously institutionalized youth predicted increases in socially anxious behavior during social stress situations, but was negatively associated with concurrent social anxiety behavior. While increased cortisol reactivity may help with behavioral control in social situations in the short-term, it may exacerbate socially anxious behavior in institutionalized youth over time. No significant associations were found for non-adopted youth.

Summary: This study examined the recalibration of the HPA axis stress response in youths who had experienced early life stress, and how it predicts socioemotional adjustment. Results showed that for youths with early life stress, increased cortisol reactivity during puberty was associated with poorer socioemotional functioning.
