Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) with posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) is a common cause of hydrocephalus in infants. Dysregulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production by the choroid plexus may contribute to the development of PHVD. The aquaporins (AQPs), transmural water transporting proteins, are believed to contribute to CSF production. The aim of the study was to characterize the expression and localization of AQP1, 4 and 5 in the choroid plexus following preterm IVH. Using a preterm rabbit pup model, the mRNA expression, protein level and localization of AQP1, 4 and 5 were investigated in the choroid plexus at 24 and 72 h following IVH with PHVD. Further, AQP1, 4 and 5 expression were characterized in primary human plexus epithelial cells exposed to CSF from preterm human infants with IVH and to hemoglobin metabolites. IVH with PHVD in the immature brain caused a downregulation of AQP1 mRNA, the key AQP in CSF production, but an upregulation of AQP1 protein level with apical epithelial cell localization. Notably, AQP5 was expressed in the choroid plexus with upregulated mRNA expression and protein levels during PHVD with apical epithelial cell localization. Analysis of human choroid plexus epithelial cells in vitro, following exposure to posthemorrhagic CSF and to hemin, displayed results concordant with those observed in vivo, i.e. downregulation of AQP1 mRNA and upregulation of AQP5 mRNA expression. AQP4 was neither detectable in vivo nor in vitro. The changes observed in AQP1 and AQP5 expression in the choroid plexus suggest an adaptive response following IVH with possible functional implications for the development of PHVD. (C) 2014 S. DISPLACEMENT PATTERNS IN MAGNETOMOTIVE ULTRASOUND EXPLORED BY FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Sandra Sjostrand, Maria Evertsson, Esayas Atile, Roger Andersson, Ingrid Svensson, Magnus Cinthio, Tomas Jansson

Summary: Magnetomotive ultrasound is a promising technique for detecting magnetic nanoparticles and imaging molecular structures, with observed displacements influenced by mechanical coupling and mass conservation principles. The importance of considering vector-valued magnetic forces in magnetomotive ultrasound is highlighted, as a simple scalar representation may underestimate vertical force components. Using a finite element model, simulations show the influence of boundary conditions, compressibility, and stiffness on nanoparticle motion, contributing to accurate analysis of magnetomotive ultrasound imaging.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of CFH and CFH-binding hemoglobin in LuTx patients and found that CFH may be associated with postoperative AKI. Moreover, experimental studies on a mouse model of mild renal ischemia reperfusion injury confirmed the role of CFH in promoting AKI. Targeting CFH may be a therapeutic option to prevent AKI after LuTx.

Summary: Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a promising clinical diagnostic tool, with one application being imaging of vascular networks in humans. We propose a method using multispectral PA imaging to image the temporal artery, allowing for clear differentiation of the artery wall and lumen, as well as distinguishing between patients diagnosed as GCA- and GCA+ based on biopsies.

Summary: This study explored the differences in histoanatomical layers of bowel walls between ganglionic and aganglionic bowel walls in children with HSCR. The findings suggest that the thicknesses of the bowel wall's muscle layers differ between aganglionic and ganglionic bowel walls. These findings support the development of a diagnostic index that could be used for instant diagnostic imaging techniques.

Summary: Lu-177-DOTATATE PRRT is an effective therapy for neuroendocrine tumors, but it can cause bone marrow suppression and renal toxicity. A1M, a recombinant antioxidant, has been shown to protect the kidneys in preclinical models. In this study, intravenous administration of rA1M reduced albuminuria levels and oxidative stress-related protein FGF-21 in mice treated with Lu-177-DOTATATE. Dual injections of rA1M preserved bone marrow cellularity and peripheral blood reticulocytes. This suggests that rA1M, when administered with Lu-177-DOTATATE, may reduce hematopoietic and kidney toxicity.

Summary: It has been shown that using ultra-high frequency (UHF) ultrasound on the external bowel wall can accurately differentiate between normal bowel and aganglionosis, which could potentially eliminate the need for biopsies in diagnosing Hirschsprung's disease. However, there are currently no suitable rectal probes available for this purpose. This study aimed to define the specifications of a new UHF transrectal ultrasound probe that would be suitable for use in infants, and two prototypes were created and tested by pediatric surgeons, with the larger and straight probe being preferred.

The impact of geometry, intramural friction, and pressure on the antegrade longitudinal motion of the arterial wall: A phantom and finite element study

Sandra Sjostrand, Alice Widerstrom, Ingrid Svensson, Patrick Segers, Tobias Erlov, Asa Ryden Ahlgren, Magnus Cinthio

Summary: Longitudinal motion of the carotid arterial wall, as measured with ultrasound, is a promising indicator of vascular health, but its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Blood pressure has a strong relation to the antegrade longitudinal displacement in early systole. Tapered geometry and intramural friction between two parts of a vessel wall also influence the longitudinal displacement.
