Summary: Early support for children with developmental disabilities is crucial. A mixed-methods evaluation in Western Uganda found that training healthcare workers positively impacted knowledge, confidence, attitudes, and referral rates. Families enrolled in the early intervention program reported significant improvements in quality of life.

Summary: The aim of this study was to summarize the prevalence estimates of developmental disabilities in children and adolescents worldwide using systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The results showed that sensory impairments were the most prevalent disabilities, while cerebral palsy was the least prevalent. However, due to limited geographical coverage and methodological heterogeneity, these results may not fully represent the global and regional prevalence of developmental disabilities.

Summary: Before the launch of the SDGs in 2015, childhood disability was not considered important in global health. The SDGs now require identification and support for children under 5 who are at risk of not benefiting from inclusive quality education. UNICEF has developed a tool for identifying children who are not developmentally on track, but it has limited sensitivity for detecting children with disabilities.

Summary: This study explores the clinical effectiveness of a parent-implemented early intervention program (PIEIP) for children with global developmental delay (GDD), providing a research basis for its future application. The results demonstrate that PIEIP intervention can significantly improve the developmental outcome and prognosis of children with GDD, especially in the areas of locomotor, personal-social, and language.

Summary: Early intervention can greatly impact families of children with developmental disabilities, but the level of access does not always match the level of need. It is important to identify factors influencing access in order to address disparities. The process of access to early intervention includes three main phases: recognition of need, identification or diagnosis, and EI provision or receipt.

Summary: This study developed an observation instrument to assess the content validity and reliability of physical activity and related contextual factors of preschoolers with developmental disabilities. The results showed that the instrument is a reliable measure for assessing physical activity in this population, providing important contextual information and allowing for simultaneous measurement of specific types and contexts of physical activity behaviors in this group.

Summary: The study found high agreement among researchers and patient-partners in the development of a new health coaching intervention for parents of children with suspected developmental delays. Both groups believed that patient engagement was important and had a significant impact on the project quality and researchers' professional development. Patient-partners also highlighted challenges related to providing feedback within realistic deadlines and the lack of a broader range of representation among members.

Summary: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic disease, and the severity of the condition varies depending on the mutations in TSC1/TSC2 genes. A study found that variations in the ATM and CHEK2 genes in TSC patients were associated with an increased risk of developing brain tumors. These findings are important for predicting disease progression and personalizing treatment strategies.

Summary: The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize the importance of inclusive and equitable quality education for children under 5 years with developmental delays and disabilities. Primary education serves as the foundation for lifelong learning and independent living. However, the majority of children with developmental disabilities in low- and middle-income countries face barriers to school readiness, including lack of foundational skills and limited access to education. This paper explores the concept of school readiness for these children and highlights the need for interdisciplinary engagement and policy initiatives to ensure inclusive education by 2030.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of a group-based intervention using neuromotor task training (NTT) principles on motor performance in children with specific learning disabilities (SLD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The results showed that the NTT intervention based on small group training had a positive effect on motor performance in learners with neurodevelopmental disorders and was more effective than usual care.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between children's sensory response patterns, child characteristics, and caregiver strategies in ASD and DD children. The findings showed that caregiver strategies were specifically associated with children's sensory response patterns, regardless of age or diagnosis. Qualitative analysis also revealed distinct caregiver strategies within different sensory patterns.

Summary: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) can lead to high mortality rates, especially in very ill children treated in hospitals. Many medical and nursing schools do not adequately teach the management of children with SAM. Country studies in South Africa, Bolivia, Malawi, and Ghana show that improving inpatient management of SAM is scalable in under-resourced public health services and can reduce mortality.

Summary: Despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19 to routine maternal and neonatal health care services, Mphatlalatsane, a multipartnered quality improvement initiative, has shown success in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates and stillbirth rates. Its agile and responsive approach has enabled it to adapt to the challenges posed by the pandemic and maintain interventions to improve maternal and neonatal health services.
