Summary: In this study, the role of RIM interneurons in C. elegans locomotion was uncovered, showing that RIM acts differently in different states, lengthening reversals when depolarized through glutamate and tyramine neurotransmitters and lengthening forward runs when hyperpolarized through its gap junctions. Additionally, the combined outputs of chemical synapses and gap junctions from RIM regulate forward-to-reversal transitions. Multiple classes of RIM synapses create behavioral inertia during spontaneous locomotion.

Summary: Information processing in neuronal circuits relies on proper development and interplay between principal and inhibitory interneurons. miRNA-dependent gene regulation plays a crucial role in the development and function of inhibitory interneurons, affecting their migration, maturation, survival, and cognitive function. Dysregulation of miRNAs in GABAergic interneurons may contribute to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Summary: Destabilase from the medical leech Hirudo medicinalis belongs to the family of i-type lysozymes and has two different enzymatic activities. The crystal structures reveal the location of a sodium ion and provide insights into the inhibition mechanism of the muramidase activity. The study suggests revising the hypothesis of isopeptidase activity and highlights the ambiguity of destabilase catalytic residue identification.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that the connexin gene family has similar subfamily structures in several vertebrate groups. However, there is a lack of data between invertebrates and teleosts. The major evolutionary transformations in this gene family are from tunicates to cyclostomes and from cyclostomes to jawed vertebrates.

Summary: Medicinal leeches primarily inhabit shallow parts of wetlands, and the fish diversity and abundance in these habitats are influenced by the presence of invasive and endemic species. The wetlands provide feeding opportunities for medicinal leeches and serve as a protected area for endangered fish species.

Summary: The subcellular positioning and molecular compositions of synapses are crucial for neural circuits. This study investigates the localization of the autism- and epilepsy-associated gene Neurobeachin, the Connexins, and the electrical synapse scaffold ZO1. It is found that Neurobeachin localizes to the electrical synapse independently, and its presence is necessary for the localization of ZO1 and Connexins. This research provides new insights into the molecular complexity and mechanisms of electrical synapse formation.

Summary: Tissue optical clearing technology has rapidly developed in the past decade, allowing observation at single-cell resolution and the ultimate goal of making intact primate and human brains optically transparent. By combining optical clearance with large-volume tissue labeling technology, it is possible to preserve anatomical structure and visualize multiple molecular information from intact samples in situ.

Summary: This study explores the interactions between different photoreceptors in the vertebrate retina and their physiological effects on visual signal processing and perception. It discusses the impact of coupling on various aspects of vision, such as signal to noise ratio, spatial acuity, and color discrimination, emphasizing data from a range of vertebrate models. The study also highlights gaps in knowledge and unanswered questions in the field, pointing towards limited evidence of ancestral forms of photoreceptor coupling.

Summary: Gap junctional intercellular communication is reduced in cancer cells compared to normal cells, but the plant-derived substance ouabain enhances this communication in various cancer cell lines through signaling mechanisms involving Csrc, ErK1/2, and ROCK-Rho. This finding suggests a potential therapeutic strategy for influencing cancer progression.

Summary: Molecular one-dimensional topological insulators (1D TIs) that conduct through low-lying topological edge states have potential for nanoelectronic devices. To observe these effects at longer lengths, we design topological oligo[n]emeraldine wires using short 1D TIs as building blocks. As the wire length increases, the number of topological states increases, enabling increased electronic transmission. The longest oligo[7]emeraldine with doped topological states has over 106 enhancements in transmission compared to its pristine form.

Summary: This article investigates the innexin gene in four species of ctenophores and finds that these genes have evolved independently from those of other animals and were established early in the evolution of ctenophores. The study also shows that ctenophores have functional innexin hemichannels that are closely related to those of other animals. Overall, the results suggest that the last common ancestor of animals had channels capable of forming both gap junctions and innexin hemichannels, and that innexin genes have independently evolved in major lineages throughout Metazoa.
