Summary: The effect of microstructure on the shock response of 1045 steel was investigated through plate impact experiments and postmortem characterization. Three unique microstructures were explored: ferrite-pearlite, martensite, and ferrite with spheroidal cementite. The results showed that the spheroidized microstructure exhibited discontinuous yielding due to low initial dislocation density and dislocation nucleation rate, while the ferrite-pearlite and martensite microstructures exhibited continuous yielding. The spall strength varied among the different microstructures, with martensite showing the highest spall strength due to a high density of low energy boundaries.

Summary: This study characterizes the elastoplastic behavior with continuous mechanical damage in a SAE 1045 steel using torsional tests and simulations. A numerical-experimental inverse analysis procedure is proposed to fit elastoplastic and continuous damage models to the material's mechanical response. The effectiveness of the procedure is validated through numerical-experimental comparison in tensile tests. The obtained numerical model is used to analyze local effects and distribution of damage in torsional and tensile tests.

Summary: This study investigates the improvement of surface properties of AISI-1045 steel through the combination of cathodic cage plasma nitriding and conventional plasma nitriding, which involves the deposition of alloying elements and subsequent nitrogen diffusion to enhance coating adhesion and hardness gradient formation. The results show significant enhancement in hardness and wear resistance, making this duplex treatment method effective for industrial applications.

Summary: This study assessed the influence of remelting path strategies on the hardness of AISI 1045 steel, finding that both strategies promoted hardness increase relative to the base metal attributed to grain refining. Simulation results revealed that Strategy 1 is more suitable than Strategy 2 to boost hardness due to its higher solidification cooling rate and lower time above 900 degrees C.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of turning parameters on residual stresses in AISI 1045 steel bars, finding that feed rate and cutting speed had a major impact on residual stress distributions. The tool nose radius affected surface residual stresses, while the rake angle did not significantly change it. Samples could be divided into two residual stress groups based on surface finishing quality.

Summary: This study evaluated the surface integrity and flank wear of uncoated cermet inserts in dry turning of AISI 1045 steel. Cutting speed and feed were varied and their effects on surface quality were analyzed. It was found that feed had a greater influence on the turned surface quality than cutting speed. The surface was significantly damaged with the progression of insert flank wear. Abrasive wear was the predominant wear mechanism observed in the experiments.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between microstructure and thermal properties of 1045 steel, and finds that the heat treatment conditions significantly affect the thermal conductivity and specific heat. The study also demonstrates the accuracy of using regression equations to estimate these thermal properties.

Summary: Fall detection is a critical issue for elders, and it is crucial to have an effective system for detecting falls and treating post-fall injuries. Camera-based systems provide more comfort and flexibility for daily life monitoring, but there are challenges and privacy concerns in monitoring human activities. To address this, we propose a surveillance camera-based framework that extracts human silhouettes and uses them for fall detection and post-fall posture classification. The method achieves state-of-the-art performance on benchmark datasets and achieves high F1-scores for fall detection and posture classification.

Summary: The superior strength-ductility synergy of 1045 carbon steel obtained through large deformation rolling at ambient temperature and subsequent annealing was mainly attributed to the microstructure characteristics at soft/hard interfaces of the heterogeneous composite structure. This was due to the second phase reinforcement of hard cementite nanoparticles and the generation of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) around soft/hard interfaces, resulting in high work hardening capability. The cold rolled 1045 steel after annealing at 673 K for 1 h exhibited remarkable tensile strength (around 1190 MPa), high yield strength (around 1118 MPa), and good ductility (around 10.6%).

Summary: Current research demonstrates that the mechanical surface-strengthening process of deeprolling is effective in improving the strength and life span of highly stressed components. Adjusting the process temperature during deep-rolling can further increase the mechanical life span, especially in soft machining operations where higher degrees of plastic deformation are induced in the subsurface.

Summary: The study found that the new SAE/AISI 1045 steel anchorage system and weld metal can operate safely under typical operating conditions of the bridge. The weld metal is prone to plastic collapse failure, while the heat-affected zone of the steel is susceptible to a combination of fracture and plastic collapse.
