Reversible and selective binding of a dynamically racemic europium(III) complex to alpha(1)-acid glycoprotein and alpha(1)-antitrypsin is characterised by a significant change in the europium total emission spectral fingerprint and the switching on of a large circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) signal from the metal centre. Observation of an induced CD into the ligand chromophore in the presence of alpha(1)-AGP allows a structure for the protein-bound complex to be postulated. A direct determination of elevated alpha(1)-AGP levels in human serum was achieved by monitoring changes in the intensity ratio of Eu emission bands.

Triggered Functional Dynamics of AsLOV2 by Time-Resolved Electron Paramagnetic Resonance at High Magnetic Fields

Shiny Maity, Brad D. D. Price, C. Blake Wilson, Arnab Mukherjee, Matthieu Starck, David Parker, Maxwell Z. Z. Wilson, Janet E. E. Lovett, Songi Han, Mark S. S. Sherwin

Summary: We propose a time-resolved Gd-Gd electron paramagnetic resonance (TiGGER) technique at 240 GHz to monitor inter-residue distances in proteins' mechanical cycles in solution state. TiGGER utilizes Gd-sTPATCN spin labels with favorable properties, including spin-7/2 EPR-active center, short linker, narrow intrinsic linewidth, and minimal anisotropy at high fields. By applying TiGGER, we observed that the C-terminus and N-terminus of AsLOV2 separate within 1 s upon light activation and relax back to equilibrium with a time constant of approximately 60 s. TiGGER also revealed that the light-induced long-range mechanical motion is decelerated in the Q513A variant of AsLOV2, which is correlated with the slowed relaxation of the optically excited chromophore as reported in recent literature. TiGGER has the potential to complement existing methods for studying triggered functional dynamics in proteins.

NIR-Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Chiral Complexes of Lanthanides and d-Metals

Oliver G. Willis, Francesco Zinna, Lorenzo Di Bari

Summary: In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) due to its popularity as a spectroscopic technique and improved accessibility to instruments. New efficient CPL emitters have been developed and various applications have been proposed. Although most examples of CPL are in the visible range, there are limited cases of near infrared (NIR) CPL active complexes. NIR-CPL compounds have potential applications in the telecommunication industry, electronic devices, and bioassays. This review provides an overview of recent developments in NIR-CPL measurements and discusses the chiroptical properties of metal complexes that achieve this capability.

Chiral diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-based oligothiophenes: Synthesis and characterization of aggregated states in solution and thin films

Gianluigi Albano, Laura Antonella Aronica, Gennaro Pescitelli, Lorenzo Di Bari

Summary: In this study, we synthesized a series of structurally related chiral oligothiophenes with a 1,4-diketo-3,6-diarylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) unit as the central core. These oligothiophenes were functionalized with the same (S)-3,7-dimethyl-1-octyl chains on the nitrogen atoms of lactam moieties, differing only in the number of lateral thiophene units. We evaluated the aggregation modes of these chiral systems through UV-Vis absorption and ECD spectroscopies in solution aggregation conditions and as thin films, highlighting the impact of pi-conjugation length on their chiroptical properties. The study also revealed that the number of thiophene units attached to the DPP core affects both the propensity to aggregation and the helicity of aggregates.

Spectral imaging in microscopy aids evaluation of the luminescent probe behaviour of europium complexes

Huishan Li, David Parker, Jing-Xiang Zhang, Hongguang Li

Summary: The analysis of variations in emission lifetime and spectral signature in a series of structurally related cationic Eu(III) triamide complexes has revealed the changes in probe speciation due to probe environment. These cationic complexes show an inherent tendency to localize in cellular nucleoli or lysosomes, providing valuable insights for the design and evaluation of targeted probes. Each of the three complexes studied has a coordinated water molecule in aqueous media, which is absent in organic solvents or displaced by protein binding. The observed complex in cells is likely a protein-bound Eu complex.

Summary: We have investigated the effect of achiral substituents on the chiral supramolecular architectures of diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,2,3-1H-triazole (DPP) dyes. By decorating the same chiral DPP motif with different substituent groups, we observed significant differences in optical, chiroptical, electrochemical and thermal properties among the three dyes. Our findings provide valuable insights for the development of chiral organic opto-electronics and other innovative technological applications.

Chiral diketopyrrolopyrrole dyes showing light emission in solid and aggregate states

Maurizio Mastropasqua Talamo, Thomas Cauchy, Flavia Pop, Francesco Zinna, Lorenzo Di Bari, Narcis Avarvari

Summary: In this work, the aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) and circularly polarised light (CPL) emission of achiral and chiral DPPs appended with tetraarylethylene units have been studied. It was found that some chiral DPPs exhibited excellent emissive properties in the solid state by suppressing aggregation-caused quenching, while achiral DPPs showed classical ACQ behavior. Furthermore, the chiroptical properties of DPPs can be enhanced by introducing N-sec-phenethyl groups.

Intense 1400-1600 nm circularly polarised luminescence from homo- and heteroleptic chiral erbium complexes

Oliver G. Willis, Andrea Pucci, Enrico Cavalli, Francesco Zinna, Lorenzo Di Bari

Summary: Efficient near-infrared circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) between 1400 and 1600 nm has been successfully measured for four enantiomer pairs of homo- and heteroleptic complexes. Using inexpensive optics and a commercial fluorimeter, discrimination of left and right circularly polarised components was achieved, resulting in remarkably high dissymmetry values in emission (g(lum)). Of particular note, the homoleptic complex CsEr(hfbc)(4) and [TMG-H+](3)Er(BINOLate)(3) exhibited maximal |g(lum)| values of 0.83 (at 1510 nm) and 0.29 (at 1545 nm) respectively, with the former complex having the strongest CPL within the NIR to date.

Summary: A new aryl selenonium polyoxometalate hybrid was developed and compared with an aryl sulfonium polyoxometalate hybrid in terms of their photocatalytic properties. It was found that the aryl selenonium hybrid exhibited better catalytic performance, which could be attributed to the larger atomic radii of selenium stabilizing the photogenerated electron-hole pair more efficiently. Additionally, the generation of elemental selenium through cleavage of C-Se bonds during catalysis was observed.
