Synthesis of Twisted [n]Cycloparaphenylene by Alkene Insertion

Tomoaki Terabayashi, Eiichi Kayahara, Yichen Zhang, Yoshiyuki Mizuhata, Norihiro Tokitoh, Tohru Nishinaga, Tatsuhisa Kato, Shigeru Yamago

Summary: In this study, Mono-alkene-inserted [n]cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) and Mono-ortho-phenylene-inserted [6]CPP were synthesized through coupling reactions, and it was found that they exhibited Mobius topology in the solid state. Although this structure is often lost in solution, ene-[6]CPP with 1-pyrrolyl groups preserved the Mobius topology even in solution.

Isomer-Selective Conversion of Au Clusters by Au(I) Thiolate Insertion

Yuki Chiga, Ryo Takahata, Wataru Suzuki, Yoshiyuki Mizuhata, Norihiro Tokitoh, Toshiharu Teranishi

Summary: This article demonstrates the isomer-selective conversion of Au-18(ScC6)(14) into Au-24(SR)( x )(ScC6)(20-x ) by reactions with gold(I) thiolate complexes. The results suggest that the number of AuSR units increases in the surface Au(I)SR oligomers, while the number of electrons in the Au core remains constant. This discovery provides an important synthetic route for rational design.

Solid-state Chromism of Zwitterionic Triarylmethylium Salts

Kento Iwai, Yoshiyuki Mizuhata, Tomoya Nakamura, Masato Goto, Atsushi Wakamiya, Yuichi Shimakawa, Norihiro Tokitoh

Summary: Zwitterionic triarylmethylium dyes 1 and 2 with varied molecular assembly and charge transfer transition were synthesized using a tetraarylborate unit. These dyes exhibited solvatochromism and mechanochromism, allowing the color of the solid state to change upon dissolution & evaporation or grinding. Different crystal forms obtained from different recrystallization conditions independently reproduced the three colors, which were correlated with solid-state structures as demonstrated by diffuse reflectance measurement and powder X-ray diffraction. The unique color change of these dyes is suggested to originate from alterations in intermolecular interactions.

P-Centred redox reactions of a 1,4-dihydro-1,4-phosphasiline

Mridhul R. K. Ramachandran, Philipp C. Brehm, Gregor Schnakenburg, Takahiro Sasamori, Rene T. Boere, Rainer Streubel

Summary: Tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-phosphasilines 3a,b were synthesized from Si(NR2)(2)-bridged imidazole-2-thione compounds 2a,b. Based on the calculated Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMOs) of 3b, a possible P-selective P-N bond cleavage reduction could be predicted, and a redox cycle was established using solutions of P-centred anionic derivative K[4b]. The cycle started with the oxidation of K[4b] to form the P-P coupled product 5b, which could be chemically reduced by KC8 to regenerate K[4b].

Summary: This study presents the experimental visualization of the valence-electron-density distribution in benzene and its kinetically stabilized heavier-element analogues, 1,2-disilabenzene and 1,2-digermabenzene. The analysis indicates that the 1,2-disilabenzene and 1,2-digermabenzene have lower aromaticity compared to benzene due to the presence of incompletely delocalized pi electrons on their cyclic conjugation systems.

Juan Carlos Perez-Sanchez, Raquel P. Herrera, M. Concepcion Gimeno

Summary: Gold(II) complexes have been less utilized in catalysis compared to their gold(I) and gold(III) counterparts. However, gold(II) complexes offer potential in homo-coupling and cross-coupling reactions, as they are more easily accessible through simplified oxidation and reduction processes. Gold(II) exhibits characteristics of both soft acid gold(I) and hard acid gold(III). This review explores the unique reactivity and potential applications of gold(II) species, highlighting their significance in catalytic transformations.

Aryl selenonium vs. aryl sulfonium counterions in polyoxometalate chemistry: the impact of Se+ cationic centers on the photocatalytic reduction of dichromate

Mahender Singh, Aakash Yadav, Ranjit Singh, Chullikkattil P. Pradeep

Summary: A new aryl selenonium polyoxometalate hybrid was developed and compared with an aryl sulfonium polyoxometalate hybrid in terms of their photocatalytic properties. It was found that the aryl selenonium hybrid exhibited better catalytic performance, which could be attributed to the larger atomic radii of selenium stabilizing the photogenerated electron-hole pair more efficiently. Additionally, the generation of elemental selenium through cleavage of C-Se bonds during catalysis was observed.
