Summary: The metal-free bond activation by carboranyl diphosphine 1-(PBu2)-Bu-t-2-(PPr2)-Pr-i-C2B10H10 involves the formal oxidation of phosphine groups and concomitant reduction of the boron cage in reactions with main group hydrides and alcohols. This new approach is driven by the cooperation between electron-donating exohedral substituents and electron-accepting cluster, and is reminiscent of oxidative addition to transition metal centers.

Summary: Nitrostyrene derivatives are commonly used in organic syntheses for various reactions. However, the behavior of ortho-hydroxy derivatives differs significantly, exhibiting C-C bond cleavage and inefficient conversion of trans-isomer to cis-isomer. The role of the ortho-hydroxy group in these unusual behaviors was investigated.

Summary: The visible-light-promoted selenocyanation of cyclobutanone oxime esters using potassium selenocyanate in the presence of a fac-Ir(ppy)(3) catalyst is reported for the first time. This method provides an effective and green strategy for the synthesis of cyano and selenocyano bifunctional substituted alkanes, due to the mild conditions employed and the use of readily accessible potassium selenocyanate.

Summary: Catalyzed by Se/Fe via hybrid mechanisms, the carbon-carbon double bond in alkenes can break to produce carbonyls under mild conditions. Using O-2 as a partial oxidant, the amount of H2O2 employed can be reduced (90 mol% vs 250 mol%) to avoid peroxide residues, making the process safer for operation.

Summary: The novel addition reaction between vicinal tricarbonyl monohydrates and active alkynes occurs rapidly via consecutive C-C/C-O cleavage processes, completing within just 1 minute under metal-free and mild conditions. Diverse tricarbonyl monohydrates can react with active alkynes to form carboxylate esters in the presence of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO).

Summary: In this study, it was found that the four-membered ruthenium(II) organometallics Ru(eta(2)-RL)(PPh3)(2)(CO)(Cl) (1) reacted with 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (Hhpbt) and 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (Hhpbo) in refluxing ethanol to yield Ru(PPh3)(2)(CO)(hpbt)Cl (2) and Ru(PPh3)(2)(CO)(hpbo)Cl (3) respectively in excellent yield. The cleavage of the Ru-C(aryl) bond in 1 and the loss of coordination of the RL ligand with the metal center in the products were observed. The spectral and electrochemical data of the complexes were analyzed, and the DNA-binding activity of the complexes was tested.

Summary: An efficient cascade reaction of cyclobutanones with chalcones has been developed, using inexpensive potassium tert-butoxide as a promoter. It enables the synthesis of densely substituted cyclohex-3-ene-carboxylic acids in high yields and with high diastereoselectivities, which are difficult to prepare using conventional methods. The method offers the advantages of transition-metal-free conditions, readily available starting materials, wide scope, and high atom economy.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of PrOx promoted Ni/Al2O3 catalysts in the hydrogenolysis of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, and discusses the effects of PrOx species on catalytic performance and product selectivity. The properties of the catalysts were examined through various characterization techniques. The results show that the presence of PrOx species can enhance reaction rate and change product selectivity significantly, and the synergistic effect between defect-rich PrOx and active Ni species contributes to the superior catalytic performances.

Summary: This article describes the synthesis and iridium coordination chemistry of a new pyridine-based phosphinito pincer ligand, PONOP-Ar-F, with ortho-trifluoromethylphenyl substituents. The reaction of PONOP-Ar-F with [Ir(biph)(COD)Cl](2) yielded [Ir(PONOP-Ar-F)(biph)Cl], which can be further transformed to [Ir(PONOP-Ar-F)(biph)](+) with an Ir <- F-C bonding interaction. Hydrogenolysis of the biphenyl ligand resulted in the formation of [Ir(PONOP-Ar-F)(H)(2)](+), and subsequent reaction with tert-butylethylene (TBE) allowed the isolation and crystallographic characterization of low valent iridium derivatives.

Summary: The Pd-catalyzed beta-carbon elimination of 3-hydroxy-4-pent-enoic acid derivatives promoted by triethylborane leads to the formation of conjugated dienes through a decarboxylation process. The resulting conjugated dienes then undergo the Prins reaction with aldehydes in situ to generate conjugated homoallylic alcohols. These sequential transformations allow for the efficient conversion of diastereomeric mixtures of 3-hydroxy-4-pentenoic acids into 3,5-hexadienyl alcohols with high regio- and stereoselectivities in a single manipulation.

Summary: Gold(II) complexes have been less utilized in catalysis compared to their gold(I) and gold(III) counterparts. However, gold(II) complexes offer potential in homo-coupling and cross-coupling reactions, as they are more easily accessible through simplified oxidation and reduction processes. Gold(II) exhibits characteristics of both soft acid gold(I) and hard acid gold(III). This review explores the unique reactivity and potential applications of gold(II) species, highlighting their significance in catalytic transformations.

Summary: A new aryl selenonium polyoxometalate hybrid was developed and compared with an aryl sulfonium polyoxometalate hybrid in terms of their photocatalytic properties. It was found that the aryl selenonium hybrid exhibited better catalytic performance, which could be attributed to the larger atomic radii of selenium stabilizing the photogenerated electron-hole pair more efficiently. Additionally, the generation of elemental selenium through cleavage of C-Se bonds during catalysis was observed.

Both materials have a three-dimensional structure with {Cu2I2} clusters coordinated by INA(-) ligands and Eu3+ or Sr2+ ions. The Sr-K-CuI-INA material exhibited sensitive fluorescence sensing behaviors towards cysteine and nitro-bearing molecules, showing potential applications in bio and explosive molecule sensing.
