Milk processing industries and distributors have problems with adulteration of liquid milk by the addition of bovine cheese whey. Recently, the detection of fraudulent manipulation of milk with whey has focused on the identification of glycomacropeptide (GMP). Current non-immunological methods to detect GMP in dairy products are expensive and time-consuming or have low sensitivity. In this study, a novel sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection and quantification of whey in raw milk was developed, using a polyclonal rabbit anti-GMP antibody. Calibration curves were constructed by analyzing raw milk standards containing different known concentrations of liquid cheese whey (0.02-20%). The method had a detection limit of 0.047% (v/v) and a quantification limit of 0.14% (v/v). The antibody showed high specificity and no cross-reaction with milk components (other than kappa-casein) and was successful in detecting GMP in dairy commercial products. The recovery ratio was between 95.62% and 113.88% for all matrices tested. The intra-assay and interassay coefficients of variation were < 6% and < 7%, respectively. Finally, it can be stored for 3 months in the form of a ready-to-use kit, while maintaining its accuracy and reproducibility.

Effects of Phase Shift Errors in Recurrence Plot for Rotating Machinery Fault Diagnosis

Ignacio Torres-Contreras, Juan Carlos Jauregui-Correa, Carlos Santiago Lopez-Cajun, Salvador Echeverria-Villagomez

Summary: Phase errors generated by the integration processing of vibration signals have a significant impact on the solution of mechanical systems with multiple vibration sources and the accuracy of fault diagnosis. Small phase shifts can alter the phase plane and RP pattern, affecting both machinery fault diagnosis accuracy and prediction for timely maintenance actions.

Pitch Angle Optimization for Small Wind Turbines Based on a Hierarchical Fuzzy-PID Controller and Anticipated Wind Speed Measurement

Ernesto Chavero-Navarrete, Mario Trejo-Perea, Juan Carlos Jauregui-Correa, Roberto Valentin Carrillo-Serrano, Guillermo Ronquillo-Lomeli, Jose Gabriel Rios-Moreno

Summary: This article introduces a control algorithm that automatically adjusts the PID gain values using a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to achieve optimal response speed of the system in different wind conditions. The membership functions of the FLC are determined through measurement of wind speed, statistical analysis of wind variability, and dynamic analysis of wind path. Experimental results showed a 7% increase in electrical output and a 20% reduction in the risk of rotor damage due to vibrations or mechanical fatigue in 14 kW SHAWTs.

Thermal Energy Storage by the Encapsulation of Phase Change Materials in Building Elements-A Review

Summary: The study shows that using phase change materials (PCMs) in buildings for additional heating can increase heat storage capacity by absorbing latent heat, providing an effective way to reduce energy consumption. The encapsulation methods at macro and micro levels are the most viable way to apply PCMs in construction elements, but more research is needed to process bio-based PCMs for increased environmental friendliness.

The Effect of a Flexible Blade for Load Alleviation in Wind Turbines

Azael Duran Castillo, Juan C. Jauregui-Correa, Francisco Herbert, Krystel K. Castillo-Villar, Jesus Alejandro Franco, Quetzalcoatl Hernandez-Escobedo, Alberto-Jesus Perea-Moreno, Alfredo Alcayde

Summary: This article presents an analysis of the performance of a flexible wind turbine blade, which includes a flexible surface and a cam mechanism to adapt the surface to different configurations. Simulation analysis was conducted to determine different aerodynamic coefficients for different deformed surfaces and wind speeds, with results suggesting a potential decrease in extreme and fatigue loads on wind turbines.

Diagnosis of Friction on an Unbalanced Rotor by Phase-Shift Empirical Mode Decomposition Integration and Recurrence Plot

Ignacio Torres-Contreras, Juan Carlos Jauregui-Correa, Salvador Echeverria-Villagomez, Juan P. Benitez-Rangel, Stephanie Camacho-Martinez

Summary: The proposed PSEMDI method is used to diagnose friction and imbalance faults by analyzing non-linear issues in mechanical systems through constructing phase planes and recurrence plots. Experimental results show that compared to the SDEMDI method, this approach provides more information about velocity and displacement spectra, and is more stable and proportionate.

Analysis of a Stamp Mill of Mexico's Antique Mines

Juan Carlos Jauregui-Correa

Summary: This paper analytically examines a previous study on the dynamic behavior of an antique stamp mill used for breaking ore stones. The model was reconstructed based on historical documents and assumed operational conditions from different technical references. The validated model provides a proper method for reconstructing engineering data of antique mechanisms and opens the door to reproducing similar mills using modern engineering concepts.

A Novel Formulation of Asparaginase Encapsulated into Virus-like Particles of Brome Mosaic Virus: In Vitro and In Vivo Evidence

Francisca Villanueva-Flores, Ana Ruth Pastor, Laura A. Palomares, Alejandro Huerta-Saquero

Summary: The interest in using plant-derived virus-like particles (pVLPs) as nanocarriers is due to their non-infectious nature, immunostimulatory properties, and ability to carry and release cargo molecules. This study encapsulated the FDA-approved drug asparaginase (ASNase) into brome mosaic virus-like particles (BMV-VLPs) to create stable ASNase-BMV nanobioreactors. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the ASNase-BMV nanobioreactors had similar cytotoxicity against cancer cells as the commercial drug. However, there was also a specific immune response against the BMV capsids. Despite this, the ASNase-BMV nanobioreactors show potential as a novel formulation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (LLA) treatment.

Summary: This paper analyzes vibration data in a wind turbine under non-stationary load conditions. The auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) algorithm is used to analyze the data, and the results are compared to the exponential forecasting method. The simplicity of the ARIMA algorithm makes it suitable for rotating machinery with high variable loading conditions.
