The constituents of the volatile oil of air-dried aerial parts of Mentha pulegium L. (Lamiaceae) plants wildly growing in Northwest Iran were analysed by GC/MS. 46 components were identified, comprising 96.6% of the essential oil. Monoterpenes (78.9%) were the main class of the identified components followed by a minor proportion of sesquiterpenes (11%). Oxygenated monoterpenes (75.3%) were the major subclass of volatile oil components with menthone (38.7%), menthol (11.3%), neomenthol (10.5%), and pulegone (6.8%) as major compounds. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (10.6%) were the highlighted subclass of 15 carbons sesquiterpenoidal compounds with (E)-caryophyllene (4.9%) and beta-cubebene (2.5%) as their principle representatives. Furthermore, menthyl acetate (C-12 acetylated monoterpene derived compound) was contained considerable amounts (5.2%) in the essential oil. In total, volatile oil composition of M. pulegium L. plants studied in the present experiment was characterised as a new menthone type with appreciable amounts of menthol and neomenthol, and it could be used as a potential source of these high value monoterpenes in pharmaceutical and food industries.

Stachys lavandulifolia Populations: Volatile Oil Profile and Morphological Diversity

Mohammad Bagher Hassanpouraghdam, Yadeghar Salimi, Mohammad Reza Morshedloo, Mohammad Asadi, Farzad Rasouli, Sezai Ercisli, Hafize Fidan, Crina Carmen Muresan, Romina Alina Marc

Summary: The morphological and essential oil diversity of Stachys lavandulifolia populations from the west and northwest of Iran were evaluated. The results showed significant differences between the populations for most traits. GC/MS analysis confirmed the presence of 28 components comprising up to 94.4% of the oils. Natural habitats and geo-climatological factors influenced both the morphological traits and oil composition. The populations have potential for breeding programs and future conservation and exploitation initiatives.

Mitigation of salinity impact in spearmint plants through the application of engineered chitosan-melatonin nanoparticles

Gholamreza Gohari, Habib Farhadi, Sima Panahirad, Elnaz Zareei, Parisa Labib, Hessam Jafari, Gholamreza Mahdavinia, Mohammad Bagher Hassanpouraghdam, Andreas Ioannou, Muhittin Kulak, Vasileios Fotopoulos

Summary: High soil salinity is a major constraint to crop production. The combination of chitosan and melatonin in the form of nanoparticles can enhance plant performance under normal and stress conditions. In this study, novel chitosan-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-melatonin nanoparticles were synthesized and applied to spearmint plants, effectively mitigating the adverse effects of salt stress and improving morphological traits, antioxidant enzyme activity, and essential oil content.

Improvements in the biochemical responses and Pb and Ni phytoremediation of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia L.) plants through Funneliformis mosseae inoculation

Farzad Rasouli, Mohammad Bagher Hassanpouraghdam, Yaghoub Pirsarandib, Mohammad Ali Aazami, Mohammad Asadi, Sezai Ercisli, Lamia Vojodi Mehrabani, Ivana Puglisi, Andrea Baglieri

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the response of lavender plants to heavy metals stress under arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation. The findings showed that AMF inoculation enhanced the uptake of lead and nickel by lavender plants and increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes and total antioxidant activity. The results suggest that AMF inoculation can enhance the phytoremediation ability of lavender plants.

Extraction of Isoflavones, Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, and Allantoin from Soybean Leaves-Optimization by a Mixture Design of the Experimental Method

Slawomir Dresler, Maciej Strzemski, Izabela Baczewska, Mateusz Koselski, Mohammad Bagher Hassanpouraghdam, Dariusz Szczepanek, Ireneusz Sowa, Magdalena Wojciak, Agnieszka Hanaka

Summary: Soybeans are a valuable source of biologically active compounds such as isoflavones, allantoin, and alpha-hydroxy acids. This study optimized three solvent systems to increase the efficiency of extracting these compounds from soybean leaves. A mixture design with three solvents was used to create an experimental plan, and polynomial regression models were developed based on the results. The optimal solvent mixture composition provided high extraction efficiency and antioxidant properties.

Influence of drought stress and mycorrhizal (Funneliformis mosseae) symbiosis on growth parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant activity, and essential oil composition of summer savory (Satureja hortensis L.) plants

Farzad Rasouli, Trifa Amini, Sona Skrovankova, Mohammad Asadi, Mohammad Bagher Hassanpouraghdam, Sezai Ercisli, Martina Buckova, Martina Mrazkova, Jiri Mlcek

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) inoculation on the physiological and biochemical responses of summer savory plants under different irrigation regimes. The results showed that plants inoculated with AMF had better growth and physiological traits, as well as improved antioxidant enzyme activity and essential oil composition. Therefore, using AMF inoculation could be a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to enhance the adaptability of summer savory plants to water shortage conditions.

Summary: Barley grain is nutritionally valuable due to its high fiber and antioxidant content. It is also a good source of unsaturated fatty acids and carotenoids. This study found that dark-pigmented barley grains contain more phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and unsaturated fatty acids compared to yellow grains. The application of an amino-acid biostimulant increased the concentration of phenolic compounds, particularly in alternative barley genotypes.
