Summary: The student stated that they don't think industry is a good fit because they are not motivated by money. As an industry scientist, this surprised me. I was attending a conference event to help graduate students and postdocs explore career options and connect with professionals from various fields. Most attendees were eager to learn about their options and some were seriously considering industry. I was glad to assist them in figuring out if it was the right path for them and how to get there. The dismissive comment from the student caught me off-guard, however, I suspect others may have felt the same way. After a brief pause, I shared my own journey.

Summary: The study explored the impact of menopause on autistic individuals, revealing exacerbated difficulties with sensory sensitivity and daily functioning, along with limited awareness and support systems for menopause. Some participants resisted negative societal constructions by enhancing self-awareness and self-care, yet still faced interpersonal and systemic barriers when seeking support from others.

Summary: Pilotto et al. demonstrate in this study that excitatory/inhibitory imbalance contributes to the development of SCA1. Through in vivo imaging in mice, they show that hyperexcitable molecular layer interneurons overinhibit Purkinje cells, leading to neurodegeneration.

Green & Sustainable Science & Technology

Summary: The negative effects of global climate disruption are increasingly severe, which is pressuring companies to behave in a more environmentally friendly manner. However, there is a divergence in the adoption of sustainability, with some companies innovating and acquiring sustainable resources while others reluctantly accept sustainability. The study finds that sustainability is perceived as unattractive and not innovative, and the benefits of sustainable technologies are seen mainly in the long term and non-traditional dimensions. Furthermore, Green IT/IS usage often focuses only on end-of-the-pipe measures. To become sustainable and effectively utilize sustainable (IT/IS) technologies, companies require external incentives from core interest groups such as legislators and investors.

Summary: In a recent study published in Science, Gabriele et al. utilized super-resolution imaging and computational modeling to quantify the dynamics of a topologically associating domain (TAD) in live cells. This research revealed that TADs spend most of their lifespan in a partially extruded state and that CTCF-CTCF loops are infrequent.

Summary: The tumor suppressor Par-4, in addition to its role as an apoptosis inducer, has new functions in regulating autophagy, senescence, and metastasis. Understanding the increasing mechanisms of Par-4 reveals how its interaction with different regulators influences cell fate. The emergence of a new secretory pathway and its clinical implications are also discussed in this review.

Summary: Protests in the US and UK since the summer of 2020 have brought together anti-vaccine groups and newly formed oppositional COVID-19 groups. These groups differ in composition but share a disagreement on the seriousness of COVID-19 and the public health measures to control it. This study aims to analyze social media discussions on mask-wearing and vaccination for COVID-19 and provide an overview of the key trends and themes in attitudes towards and adoption of health measures.
