In the last 3 years, more evidence accumulated that vitamin D (vitD)deficiency associates with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and risk factors. The association with higher cardiovascular (CV) mortality was stronger than with nonfatal CVD events. A higher incidence of type 2 diabetes was also shown. Many factors related to lifestyle (physical activity in particular) influence both vitD levels and CVD, and may contribute to explain these observational data. Whether the association between vitD and CVD is causal can only be established through randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and to date the results of the randomized trials, which were not designed for investigating CV outcomes, do not support the association data. Answers on the effects of vitD supplementation on primary and secondary prevention of CV may be found in the specifically designed ongoing RCTs. In the mean time, low vitamin D levels should be regarded as a marker of unhealthy lifestyle, requiring a more aggressive attempt at modifying individual lifestyle.

Dietary determinants of postprandial blood glucose control in adults with type 1 diabetes on a hybrid closed-loop system

Claudia Vetrani, Ilaria Calabrese, Luisa Cavagnuolo, Daniela Pacella, Elsa Napolano, Silvia Di Rienzo, Gabriele Riccardi, Angela A. Rivellese, Giovanni Annuzzi, Lutgarda Bozzetto

Summary: This study found that nutritional factors other than the amount of carbohydrate significantly influence postprandial blood glucose control, with varying effects at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, challenging the effectiveness of HCLSs.

Dietary Recommendations for Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

Luigi Barrea, William B. Grant, Evelyn Frias-Toral, Claudia Vetrani, Ludovica Verde, Giulia de Alteriis, Annamaria Docimo, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao, Giovanna Muscogiuri

Summary: At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts focused on containing the virus, but now it is important to address the overall health of COVID-19 survivors. Post-COVID-19 syndrome has been identified, which includes malnutrition, inflammation, and functional impairments. Nutritional assessment and personalized dietary recommendations play a crucial role in the management and recovery of these patients.

From Gut Microbiota through Low-Grade Inflammation to Obesity: Key Players and Potential Targets

Claudia Vetrani, Andrea Di Nisio, Stavroula A. Paschou, Luigi Barrea, Giovanna Muscogiuri, Chiara Graziadio, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao

Summary: The gut microbiota plays an important role in obesity and its related diseases by influencing inflammation in the host. This narrative review provides evidence on the key factors linking gut microbiota to inflammation in relation to obesity and its complications. Therapeutic approaches to reduce microbiota-related inflammation are also discussed.

Vitamin D and chronotype: is there any relationship in individuals with obesity?

C. Vetrani, L. Barrea, L. Verde, A. Docimo, S. Aprano, S. Savastano, A. Colao, G. Muscogiuri

Summary: This study found that individuals with evening chronotype (EC) and obesity had higher BMI, waist circumference, and hip circumference compared to individuals with morning chronotype (MC) and obesity. EC individuals also had lower insulin sensitivity and 25-OH-D levels. Moreover, EC individuals had a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and impaired fasting glucose. 25-OH-D was positively correlated with chronotype score and negatively correlated with BMI. These findings suggest that 25-OH-D and chronotype are independently associated with obesity.

Protein and Leucine Intake at Main Meals in Elderly People with Type 2 Diabetes

Elena Massimino, Anna Izzo, Carmen Castaldo, Anna Paola Amoroso, Angela Albarosa Rivellese, Brunella Capaldo, Giuseppe Della Pepa

Summary: This cross-sectional study evaluated protein and leucine intake at each meal in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that the average protein intake was low, particularly at breakfast and dinner, and leucine intake was remarkably lower than the recommended levels. These data indicate the need to implement nutritional strategies to increase protein and leucine intake in the elderly with type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes: Also a Clock Matter?

Annamaria Docimo, Ludovica Verde, Luigi Barrea, Claudia Vetrani, Pasqualina Memoli, Giacomo Accardo, Caterina Colella, Gabriella Nosso, Marcello Orio, Andrea Renzullo, Silvia Savastano, Annamaria Colao, Giovanna Muscogiuri

Summary: This study investigated the association between chronotype and glycemic control, antidiabetic treatment, and risk of developing complications in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that evening chronotype individuals had higher levels of glycated hemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose, as well as a higher prevalence of cardiovascular complications. Additionally, their glycemic control was poorer. Therefore, controlling chronotype may be important for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and safety of Triticum vulgare extract and polyhexanide (Fitostimoline(R) hydrogel/Fitostimoline(R) Plus gauze) with saline gauze dressings for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. The results showed that compared to saline gauze, Fitostimoline(R) hydrogel/Fitostimoline(R) Plus gauze significantly improved the symptoms of the wound and perilesional skin. There were no significant differences in healing rate and reduction in ulcer size between the two groups.

Iron Levels and Markers of Inflammation in a Population of Adults with Severe Obesity, a Cross-Sectional Study

Daniela Laudisio, Giulia de Alteriis, Claudia Vetrani, Sara Aprano, Gabriella Pugliese, Francesca Zumbolo, Annamaria Colao, Silvia Savastano

Summary: Low-grade chronic inflammation linked to obesity can lead to alterations in biomarkers of iron status. This study investigated the primary determinant of serum iron levels among anthropometric measurements, body fat, and serum biomarkers of low-grade chronic inflammation. Results showed that waist circumference was the major negative predictor of serum iron level.

Dietary micronutrient adequacies and adherence to the Mediterranean diet in a population of older adults with type 2 diabetes: A cross-sectional study

Elena Massimino, Anna Izzo, Carmen Castaldo, Anna Paola Amoroso, Angela Albarosa Rivellese, Brunella Capaldo, Giuseppe Della Pepa

Summary: This cross-sectional study evaluated micronutrient intake and adherence to the Mediterranean diet in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The findings showed that a very low proportion of older adults met the recommendations for potassium and vitamin D intake, and there was also low adherence to the recommendations for calcium, magnesium, selenium, vitamin E, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate, and niacin intake. Only 53% of the population adhered to the Mediterranean diet. Therefore, it is important to implement nutritional approaches to improve micronutrient intake and adherence to dietary recommendations in older adults.
