On the basis of a recently demonstrated crystal engineering strategy, two hydrogen bond equipped bidentate ligands, namely, N,N '-bis-(3-pyridyl)isophthalamide Li and N,N '-bis-(3-pyridyl)terephthalamide L2, have been exploited to generate a new series of Zn-Il-coordination polymer based metallogels. As many as 12 metallogels have been prepared by the reaction of these ligands with various Zn-II halides under various conditions. The gels were characterized by rheology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). A structure-property correlation study based on the PXRD of the xerogels and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) data of some of the isolated single crystals of the reaction products clearly establishes the structures of the gel fibers in the xerogels and supports the crystal engineering based design strategy based on which metallogels are prepared.

Exploring Triazole-Thiourea Based Ligands for the Self-Assembly of Photoluminescent Hg(II) Coordination Compounds

Houria Benaissa, Nayarassery N. Adarsh, Koen Robeyns, Jakub J. Zakrzewski, Szymon Chorazy, James G. M. Hooper, Filip Sagan, Mariusz P. Mitoraj, Mariusz Wolff, Smaail Radi, Yann Garcia

Summary: This study is the first explorative investigation on the supramolecular structural diversity in Hg(II) coordination chemistry with triazole-thiourea ligands, leading to a variety of mononuclear, binuclear, and coordination polymers. The ligands were fully characterized, including by X-ray crystallography and computational means, proving that Hg(II) halide coordination polymers involving flexible 1,2,4-triazole-based ligands form a promising class of luminescent molecular materials.

Light-Triggered Metal Coordination Dynamics in Photoswitchable Dithienylethene-Ferrocene System

Manisha Karmakar, Adwitiya Pal, Bijan Mondal, Nayarassery N. Adarsh, Arunabha Thakur

Summary: The C-2-symmetric photochromic molecule 3, with dithienylethene (DTE) and ferrocene units connected by an alkyne bridge, binds with Hg2+ where the open state (3o) binds more strongly than the closed state (3c). The metal binding does not disrupt the inherent photoisomerization properties of the DTE core, and the photoswitchability persists even in the metal-coordinated form of 3, albeit at a slower rate.

A 0D/2D Heterojunction Composite of Polymeric Carbon Nitride and ZIF-8-Derived ZnO for Photocatalytic Organic Pollutant Degradation

Vandana P. Viswanathan, Vaishak T. Balakrishnan, Nayarassery N. Adarsh, V. Binsy Varghese, Suresh Mathew

Summary: In this study, ZIF-8 was used as a matrix to synthesize 0D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B. The hybrid system ZnO/C3N4-5% (ZCN-5) showed good photocatalytic activity under sunlight. The contact between ZnO and C3N4 and the uniform distribution of ZnO on the surface of the C3N4 nanosheet were observed, facilitating the formation of the 0D/2D heterojunction.

Krishna Mohan Das, Adwitiya Pal, Bappaditya Goswami, Nayarassery N. Adarsh, Arunabha Thakur

Summary: Alkynes are versatile functional groups in organic chemistry that have important applications in molecular recognition. Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that cyclic internally conjugated alkynes can function as potential sensors for Hg2+ ions, while terminal alkynes cannot perform as chemical sensors for Hg2+ ions but can respond through functional group transformation.

Vandana P. Viswanathan, Adarsh N. Nayarassery, Marilyn Mary Xavier, Suresh Mathew

Summary: Fabricating 2D/1D heterojunction photocatalysts (alpha-Fe2O3/C3N4) can effectively enhance the performance of visible light photocatalytic reactions. The reduction of band gap due to the heterojunction formation between C3N4 and alpha-Fe2O3 leads to excellent photocatalytic activity. The proposed Z-scheme mechanism of FC-8 composite and its high recyclability and chemical stability demonstrate the importance of this research.
