A large dataset of scientific text reuse in Open-Access publications

Summary: We introduce the Webis-STEREO-21 dataset, a large collection of Scientific Text Reuse in Open-access publications, consisting of 91 million cases of reused text passages from 4.2 million unique open-access publications. The dataset covers a wide range of reuse types, from overlapping words to near-duplicate publications, and provides comprehensive metadata for contextualizing each case. It addresses the shortcomings of previous datasets on scientific writing and allows for qualitative and quantitative analysis of text reuse in science.

The Acceptable Text Similarity Level in Manuscripts Submitted to Scientific Journals

Summary: Plagiarism is a common scientific misconduct in submitted manuscripts, but high text similarity does not necessarily mean plagiarism, and low similarity does not guarantee absence of plagiarism. Each instance of text similarity should be carefully examined by experienced individuals in the editorial office. There is no specific cut-off for text similarity to imply plagiarism.

Summary: It is uncommon for scientists to acknowledge the limitations of their research because of the pressure to publish. This has resulted in a crisis of reproducibility in published research. To address this, including a 'Limitations' section in scientific papers is suggested, as it promotes honesty and transparency. This recommendation applies to all scientific disciplines.

Retractions in primary care journals (2000-2022)

The researchers found that the proportion of retractions in primary care journals was significantly lower compared to general internal medicine journals and all PubMed articles. Bibliometric assessment of national scientific journals

Summary: This study analyzed nationally oriented scientific-scholarly journals from a methodological-informetric viewpoint using data extracted from Scimago Journal Rank based on Scopus. It proposed an operational definition of a journal's degree of national orientation based on the geographical distribution of its publishing or citing authors and discussed the role of international collaboration and a country's total publication output. The study presented a comprehensive analysis of trends in national orientation and citation impact of national journals entering Scopus until 2019, extending outcomes in earlier studies.

PreprintMatch: A tool for preprint to publication detection shows global inequities in scientific publication

Summary: Preprints, which are scientific manuscripts released before peer review, are gaining popularity due to their potential to democratize and speed up research. However, there is often a lack of connection between preprints and their later published versions. To address this, a tool called PreprintMatch was developed to find matches between preprints and published papers. This tool outperforms existing techniques in terms of matching performance and speed. A study using PreprintMatch revealed that preprints from low income countries are published at a lower rate and with different characteristics compared to those from high income countries, indicating research inequity. Additionally, certain publishers are found to be more likely to publish work from authors in lower income countries.

Multi-Agents Indexing System (MAIS) for Plagiarism Detection

Summary: This paper proposes a novel approach called Multi-agents Indexing System to address plagiarism in Arabic documents. The system consists of three phases: natural language processing, indexing, and evaluation. The results show that the proposed system improves the performance of plagiarism detection in Arabic documents with semantic indexing and multi-agents system.

Paraphrase type identification for plagiarism detection using contexts and word embeddings

Summary: This research examines the importance of paraphrase types in plagiarism detection and proposes a three staged approach that utilizes context matching and pretrained word embeddings to identify synonymous substitution and word reordering. Experimental results suggest that using the Smith Waterman Algorithm and ConceptNet Numberbatch pretrained word embeddings achieves the best performance in terms of F1 scores.

Retracted papers by Iranian authors: causes, journals, time lags, affiliations, collaborations

Summary: This study analyzed 343 retraction notices related to scientific articles written by authors affiliated with Iranian institutions, finding that most retractions were due to fake peer review and plagiarism, with an average retraction time of 591 days. Islamic Azad University accounted for over half (53.1%) of the retracted papers, with 48 papers published in two medical journals.

Attitudes and practices of open data, preprinting, and peer-review-A cross sectional study on Croatian scientists

Summary: This study aimed to construct and validate a questionnaire to assess attitudes of Croatian scientists towards open peer review, open data, and preprints. The findings showed that Croatian scientists generally held neutral attitudes towards these topics, but those who had engaged in open peer review or preprinting had more positive attitudes. Further research is necessary to explore ways to increase scientists' attitudes and their engagement with open science practices.

Salivary melatonin in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients

Summary: This study aimed to investigate salivary melatonin levels in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients and found significantly higher melatonin levels in the saliva of OSCC patients, along with significantly lower sleep quality. The results suggest salivary MLT as a potential biomarker for non-invasive detection of early stage OSCC.

Summary: This study aims to determine the levels of SCCA1, SCCA2, and TROP2 in the saliva of patients with T1N0M0 OSCC and compare them with healthy individuals. The results show that SCCA1 and SCCA2 levels are significantly different in the saliva of early-stage OSCC patients and could potentially serve as biomarkers for early diagnosis.

Interventions, including psychological support and skill-building, may help improve caregiver HRQoL influenced by dementia patients' symptoms and caregiver burden.
