There is currently no standard approach for deriving micronutrient recommendations, and large variations exist across Europe, causing confusion among consumers, food producers, and policy makers. More aligned information could influence dietary behaviors and potentially lead to a healthier population. Funded by the European Commission, EURRECA (EURopean micronutrient RECommendations Aligned) has developed methods and applications to guide Nutrient Recommendation Setting Bodies through the process of setting micronutrient reference values. The EURRECA approach is crystallized into its framework that outlines a standard process for deriving and using dietary reference values for micronutrients in a transparent, systematic, and scientific way. The 9 activities of the framework can be clustered into four stages (i) defining the problem, (ii) monitoring and evaluating, (iii) deriving dietary reference values, and (iv) using dietary reference values in policy making. The EURRECA framework should not be interpreted as a prescriptive description of a linear process, but as a structured guide for checking that all issues essential for deriving requirements have at least been considered.

Food portion sizes and their relationship with energy, and nutrient intakes in adolescents: The HELENA study

Sondos M. Flieh, Maria L. Miguel-Berges, Inge Huybrechts, Christina Breidenassel, Evangelia Grammatikaki, Cinzia Le Donne, Yannis Manios, Kurt Widhalm, Denes Molnar, Peter Stehle, Anthony Kafatos, Jean Dallongeville, Cristina Molina-Hidalgo, Sonia Gomez-Martinez, Marcela Gonzalez-Gross, Stefaan De Henauw, Laurent Beghin, Mathilde Kersting, Luis A. Moreno, Esther M. Gonzalez-Gil

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between portion sizes (PSs) from different food groups and energy, as well as nutrient intakes in European adolescents. The results showed that energy intake increased with elevated intakes of energy-dense foods. Larger portions of certain food groups were associated with increased intake of specific nutrients. Conversely, larger portions of high energy-dense foods were associated with lower intake of vitamins and micronutrients. These findings have implications for future dietary guidance and targeted strategies to address nutrient intakes in European adolescents.

Efficacy of Dietary Polyphenols from Whole Foods and Purified Food Polyphenol Extracts in Optimizing Cardiometabolic Health: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Tonny Kiyimba, Peter Yiga, Michael Bamuwamye, Patrick Ogwok, Bart Van der Schueren, Christophe Matthys

Summary: This review analyzed data from 46 clinical trials and found that whole polyphenol-rich foods can significantly reduce diastolic and systolic blood pressure, while purified food polyphenol extracts have a larger effect on waist circumference. Significant effects on total cholesterol and triglycerides were observed with purified extracts. These findings indicate that both whole food and purified extracts of polyphenols can reduce cardiometabolic risks, but caution is needed due to high heterogeneity and risk of bias among trials.

Caro Minschart, Nele Myngheer, Toon Maes, Christophe De Block, Inge Van Pottelbergh, Pascale Abrams, Wouter Vinck, Liesbeth Leuridan, Sabien Driessens, Chantal Mathieu, Jaak Billen, Christophe Matthys, Annouschka Laenen, Annick Bogaerts, Katrien Benhalima

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for early postpartum weight retention (PPWR) and glucose intolerance (GI) in women with gestational diabetes (GDM). The results showed that excessive gestational weight gain, lack of breastfeeding, higher dietary fat intake, insulin use during pregnancy, multiparity, lower prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), and lower education degree were independent predictors for early PPWR. Women with high PPWR had a more impaired postpartum metabolic profile, breastfed less often, had higher rates of depression and anxiety, and lower quality of life. Additionally, 28% of participants had GI, with women with high PPWR being more likely to have GI. Only 12.9% of women with high PPWR perceived themselves at high risk for diabetes but were more willing to change their lifestyle.

Dietary intake, physical activity and sedentary behavior and association with BMI during the transition to parenthood: a prospective dyadic study

Vicka Versele, Lara Stas, Dirk Aerenhouts, Tom Deliens, Christophe Matthys, Leonardo Gucciardo, Roland Devlieger, Peter Clarys, Annick Bogaerts

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in diet, physical activity, and sedentary behavior during pregnancy and after childbirth in first-time parents, as well as the association with changes in BMI. The results showed that women had decreased fruit intake, increased alcohol intake, increased light-intensity physical activity, and decreased sedentary behavior from pregnancy to 6 months postpartum. Decreased fruit intake between 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum was associated with increased BMI. Men did not show significant dietary changes, but had increased light-intensity physical activity and decreased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity at 6 months postpartum. Paternal increases in avoidance food group intake were associated with increased BMI between baseline and 6 weeks postpartum. No associations were found between changes in BMI and changes in physical activity and sedentary behavior.

Emerging adults' food media experiences: Preferences, opportunities, and barriers for food literacy promotion

Lauranna Teunissen, Isabelle Cuykx, Paulien Decorte, Heidi Vandebosch, Christophe Matthys, Sara Pabian, Kathleen Van Royen, Charlotte De Backer

Summary: This study explores how and why emerging adults engage with food media messages and their perceptions of positive and negative outcomes related to food literacy. Seven focus groups were conducted with 37 emerging adults aged 18-25, divided by gender and socio-economic status. Photovoice was employed to reflect on participants' real-life experiences with food media. The findings indicate that food media consumption involves both active searching and incidental encountering. The results also suggest that attractive and engaging content, as well as featuring popular food personalities, capture the attention of emerging adults. Furthermore, food media messages were found to both enhance and distort food literacy. These findings highlight the potential for designing food media messages in food literacy interventions to cater to the needs and interests of emerging adults.
