Vitamin D has been attributed roles in the pathogenesis and prevention of several diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, autism and autoimmune diseases. The concomitant expression of the 25-hydroxyvitamin D-3-1 alpha-hydroxylase and of the vitamin D-3 receptor in animal and human tissues and organs other than bone supports this paradigm. Translated into the clinical field, meta-analyses and systematic reviews have also revealed an association between vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency and non-osseous diseases. Although relying on the large databases, they are diverse in nature and involve participants of varying age and evolving in different environments. Furthermore, they do not allow any analysis of a possible causal relationship between vitamin D supplementation and clinical outcomes. Following a brief historical account, this review addresses these caveats, and gives examples of randomized controlled trials conducted in the fields of acquired immune and autoimmune diseases.

Prevalence of Silent Atherosclerosis and Other Comorbidities in an Outpatient Cohort of Adults Living with HIV: Associations with HIV Parameters and Biomarkers

Jade Ghosn, Hendy Abdoul, Soraya Fellahi, Audrey Merlet, Dominique Salmon, Jean-Pierre Morini, Jean Deleuze, Jacques Blacher, Jacqueline Capeau, Jean-Philippe Bastard, Jean-Paul Viard

Summary: People living with HIV are at risk of noninfectious comorbidities, with subclinical atherosclerosis and multimorbidity common in middle-aged, well-controlled PLWH, and the presence of multiple comorbidities is associated with older age and longer exposure to antiretrovirals. Associations between comorbidities and inflammatory/immune activation biomarkers are diverse.

Sleep, Prospective Memory, and Immune Status among People Living with HIV

Brice Faraut, Lorenzo Tonetti, Alexandre Malmartel, Sophie Grabar, Jade Ghosn, Jean-Paul Viard, Vincenzo Natale, Damien Leger

Summary: Persons living with HIV have more fragmented sleep and the severity of HIV infection is associated with increased sleep duration. Better performance scores on prospective memory tasks were associated with several sleep parameters in controls but not in PLWH. Long sleepers within the PLWH group were found to have a greater severity of the disease.

Efficacy of Polyphenols in the Management of Dyslipidemia: A Focus on Clinical Studies

Francis Feldman, Mireille Koudoufio, Yves Desjardins, Schohraya Spahis, Edgard Delvin, Emile Levy

Summary: Polyphenols (PLPs), phytochemicals found in plant-based foods, have shown promising effects on lipid disorders in animal models. However, their effectiveness in human dyslipidemia is still unclear, highlighting the need for further research to clarify their potential role in managing lipid metabolism disorders.

Summary: This study demonstrated that glycomacropeptide (GMP) has the potential to reduce systemic insulin resistance, decrease oxidative stress and inflammation, enhance antioxidant enzyme expression in the liver, and inhibit hepatic inflammatory response, leading to improved hepatic insulin sensitivity and restoration of liver homeostasis.

Summary: The study found a significant increase in the incidence of non-liver malignancies in PLWH with HBV infection, particularly in those who were HBV DNA positive and for NHL. These findings suggest the need for increased cancer screening in HIV-positive individuals with chronic HBV infection.

A case of Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumor of the posterior interosseous nerve mimicking schwannoma

Summary: This case study reports the occurrence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated smooth muscle tumor (SMT) in the peripheral nerve of a young man infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Initially misdiagnosed as a schwannoma, the correct diagnosis was made through histological examination. EBV-associated SMTs are commonly found in young adults with poorly controlled HIV infection and can occur in multiple organs. The prognosis is affected by the complications of immunodeficiency.

Use of contraindicated antiretroviral drugs in people with HIV/HCV coinfections receiving HCV treatment with direct-acting antivirals-Results from the EuroSIDA study

Myroslava Nikolaichuk, Amanda Mocroft, Gilles Wandeler, Janos Szlavik, Magnus Gottfredsson, Dag Henrik Reikvam, Veronica Svedhem, Hila Elinav, Montserrat Laguno, Kamal Mansinho, Emma Devitt, Nikoloz Chkhartishvili, Georg Behrens, Johannes Bogner, Jean-Paul Viard, Alan Winston, Thomas Benfield, Clifford Leen, Olga Fursa, Juergen Rockstroh, Lars Peters

Summary: This study aimed to determine the usage of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) according to European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) guidelines in HIV/HCV coinfected patients treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). The findings showed that more than one-third of patients received DAAs with potential ARV contraindications, but few received a contraindicated ARV. However, patients who received a contraindicated DAA and ARV combination still had a high rate of sustained virological response.

Decrease in CD4 T-Cell Count and Risk of Severe Morbid Conditions in People With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection With Controlled Viral Load After Initiating Combination Antiretroviral Therapy Between 2006 and 2018

Maria Choufany, Laurence Weiss, Alain Makinson, Helene Roul, Jean-Michel Livrozet, Valerie Pourcher, Giovanna Melica, Christophe Rioux, Jean-Paul Viard, Esaie Marshall, Sophie Grabar, Dominique Costagliola

Summary: The study aimed to assess the risk of CD4 T-cell count decline and its association with severe morbid conditions or death in people with HIV infection. The results showed that CD4 decline was rare but associated with a higher risk of severe morbid conditions or death within the first 6 months.

Injectable long acting antiretroviral for HIV treatment and prevention: perspectives of potential users

Laurence Slama, Raphael Porcher, Francoise Linard, Catherine Chakvetadze, Agnes Cros, Severine Carillon, Lucille Gallardo, Jean-Paul Viard, Jean-Michel Molina

Summary: This study aimed to understand the perspectives of people with HIV (PWH) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users on long-acting injectable (LAA) antiretroviral drugs. The results showed that a large majority of PWH and PrEP users expressed a high level of interest in LAA, particularly among PrEP users. However, no specific characteristics were associated with acceptance of LAA in both groups, suggesting a need for further studies to identify the targeted individuals.
