Summary: The study demonstrated for the first time that the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 could effectively degrade Bisphenol F (BPF), with the involvement of functional genes detected by RNA-Seq. Results indicated that P. sordida YK-624 could secrete high levels of ligninolytic enzymes for BPF degradation.

Summary: The rapid economic development has led to the release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the environment. White-rot fungi, such as Trametes maxima IIPLC-32, have shown promise in the degradation of PAHs. In this study, the biodegradation of pyrene by T. maxima IIPLC-32 was investigated, and the pathway and mechanism of pyrene degradation were determined. The results showed a significant decrease in pyrene concentration within 16 days, and the secretome analysis revealed the presence of various relevant proteins. Overall, this study provides insights into the potential use of T. maxima IIPLC-32 in the bioremediation of PAH-contaminated aquatic environments.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of a fungal isolate to remove selected pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) from wastewater. The isolate exhibited high removal efficiency and ligninolytic enzymatic activity played an important role in the removal of PhCs. In addition to biosorption and biotransformation, other fungal metabolites also played a significant role in the degradation of PhCs.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of using alfalfa pulp as a substrate for oyster mushroom cultivation, and found that it was a better alternative to wheat straw. The use of alfalfa pulp resulted in higher biological efficiency and a shorter lifecycle for the mushrooms. This was due to the higher protein content and greater degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose in the alfalfa pulp, facilitated by the extracellular hydrolytic and oxidative enzyme activity from mushroom growth. The quality and safety of the mushrooms produced on alfalfa pulp were also evaluated and found to be acceptable.

Summary: In this study, a noncovalent supramolecular system (LGS) consisting of laccase (LAC) and guaiacyl (G)-type monomers was constructed for the conversion of waste lignin. The research revealed that the secondary structure of the LAC binding site changed to accommodate the G-type monomer, resulting in accelerated catalytic reactions. The presence of the LGS system significantly increased the conversion rate of lignin and the production yield of syringyl monomers.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic characteristics of antibiotics in anaerobic digestion (AD) systems, including physiochemical factors, microbial communities, and functional genes. The results revealed that antibiotic removal mainly occurred in the first 21 days, with sulfonamides having the highest removal rate. Key microorganisms involved in antibiotic biodegradation belonged to Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Key enzymes involved in the process included deaminases, peptidases, C-N ligases, decarboxylases, and alkyl-aryl transferases. Structural equation modeling showed that low concentrations of propionic acid promoted microbial activity during the first 21 days, but its accumulation inhibited activity afterwards. Therefore, regulating propionic acid in engineered AD systems is important to prevent the adverse effect of acid inhibition on antibiotic-degrading bacteria.

Summary: This review focuses on medicinal food plants and their isolated chemicals that inhibit important enzymes in common diseases. Mechanistic overviews explain the inhibition mechanism of these food-based enzyme inhibitors. Medicinal food plants and their compounds, including phenolic and flavonoid compounds, have shown potential as enzyme inhibitors. Further studies are recommended to explore the potential of these compounds for pharmacologically active functional foods.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach to address the limitation of manganese peroxidase (MnP) in Mn2+-deficient systems by co-immobilizing MnP and Mn2+ in silica gels. The co-immobilized MnP exhibited higher activity and superior dye removal compared to MnP immobilized alone. This research enables a broader application of MnP enzymes in sustainable environmental remediation and industrial catalysis.

Summary: Medicinal mushrooms are considered new-generation foods with high content of biologically active compounds. They have beneficial effects on overall health and nutritional level, exhibiting anticancer, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and immunomodulatory effects. However, further long-term clinical studies are needed to understand their mechanisms of action. Medicinal mushrooms have great potential in the design of innovative functional foods, though their interactions with food matrix require further research.
