A major environmental problem in the ocean is the alarming increase in diseases affecting diverse marine organisms including corals. Environmental factors such as the rising seawater temperatures and terrestrial microbial input to the ocean have contributed to the increase in diseased organisms. We isolated and identified the fungal agents that may be leading to a disease in the Pacific sea fan Pacifigorgia eximia (Gorgoniidae, Octocorallia) in the Tropical Eastern Pacific. We isolated thirteen fungal genera in healthy and diseased colonies including Aspergillus sydowii. Aspergillus has been previously identified as responsible for the mortality of gorgonian corals in the Caribbean. This disease was observed in the Eastern Pacific affecting a completely different set of species nearly 30 years after the Caribbean outbreak, which concur with rising seawater temperatures and thermal anomalies that have been observed in the last 4 years.

Summary: Strain OF001 and A210 encode enzymes potentially involved in manganese oxidation and have the ability to remove cylindrospermopsin. They can grow over a wide range of oxygen concentrations, fix nitrogen, and reduce nitrate and sulfate.

Deep connections: Divergence histories with gene flow in mesophotic Agaricia corals

Summary: Research has found that there is no genetic structure among certain species in mesophotic coral ecosystems and there are hidden cryptic taxa. High gene flow suggests the possibility of connectivity and replenishment among these species. The study also suggests that environmental selection along shallow to mesophotic depth gradients may drive divergence in certain depth-generalist species. The research highlights the importance of gene flow in connecting different taxa within this relatively diverse Caribbean genus.

Summary: The microbial biogas network is stable in its overall functionality but may be impaired if key microorganism groups are affected. Bacteriophages are believed to alter the steering process of the microbial network. This study extracted virus-like particles from a biogas reactor and identified 375 metagenome-assembled viral genomes. The metavirome sequencing provided new genome sequence information for viral genetic diversity in biogas reactors.

Mesophotic Gorgonian Corals Evolved Multiple Times and Faster Than Deep and Shallow Lineages

Juan A. Sanchez, Fanny L. Gonzalez-Zapata, Carlos Prada, Luisa F. Duenas

Summary: Mesophotic gorgonians have evolved multiple times from old deep-sea lineages, while shallow-water species belong to younger lineages. The mesophotic gorgonian fauna in the studied areas is related to shallow-water counterparts in two clades, indicating diversification driven by bathymetrical gradient. Interestingly, mesophotic clades have diversified faster than either shallow or deep clades.

Summary: The biodiversity on coral reefs depends not only on primary reef-builders, but also on associated taxa that create microhabitats for other species. This study assessed the genetic structure and evolutionary history of lace corals in the Atlantic, showing high speciose nature and genetic differentiation.

Conservation at the edge: connectivity and opportunities from non-protected coral reefs close to a National Park in the Colombian Caribbean

Summary: Confronting a sustained coral reef conservation crisis, a study was conducted on the benthic community, fish community, and genetic connectivity of main reef-building corals in Baru peninsula, Colombia. The study found a homogeneous fringing reef track with differences in coral composition between sites and depths. The reef system in the Non-Protected Area (NPA) exhibited high coral cover and can be considered a spatial refugia under climate change and Anthropocene conditions. The study suggests implementing a co-management scheme to protect this unique reef tract.

Octocoral Distribution Patterns at the Equatorial Front (Tropical Eastern Pacific): Muricea and Leptogorgia

Ruben Abad, Karla B. Jaramillo, Divar Castro, Juan A. Sanchez, Jenny Rodriguez

Summary: This study assessed the distribution of two common octocoral genera, Muricea and Leptogorgia, in the Equatorial Front region of the Tropical Eastern Pacific. The results revealed two hotspots of octocoral biodiversity, with Sea Surface Temperature being the main environmental factor influencing octocoral distribution. Muricea showed higher resilience to thermal fluctuations compared to Leptogorgia. The study discussed the potential roles of suitable substrates at specific depths, active photosynthetic radiation, and temperature in the occurrence of octocorals in these hotspots.

In situ visualization of glycoside hydrolase family 92 genes in marine flavobacteria

Summary: The study successfully visualized the in situ localization of single-copy genes in Flavobacteriia and planktonic samples from the North Sea using direct-geneFISH technique, revealing the distribution and functional differences of polysaccharide-degrading genes among different Polaribacter species. By broadening probe specificities, highly similar genes in yet unidentified taxa were also detected, enabling visualization of the functional trait in subpopulations across species boundaries. Such quantitative insight into the niche separation of flavobacterial taxa complements our understanding of the ecology of polysaccharide-degrading bacteria beyond omics-based techniques on a single-cell level.
