Background: It is unknown whether diets with a high dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) can modify oxidative stress, low-grade inflammation, or liver dysfunction, all of which are risk factors for multiple sclerosis disease. This study assesses alanine amino-transferase (ALT), aspartate-aminotransferase (AST) and gamma-glutarnyl transferase (GGT) activities in MS patients treated with co-supplemented hemp seed and evening primrose oils as well as Hot-nature diet and the therapeutic potential this intervention. Methods and materials: In this double blind, randomized trial, 100 MS patients with EDSS < 6 were allocated into 3 groups: group A, who received co-supplemented hemp seed and evening primrose oils with advised Hot-nature diet; group B,who received olive oil; and group C, who received the co-supplemented oils. Clinically, EDSS as well as serum level of liver enzymes (GGT, AST, and ALT) were assessed at baseline and after 6 months. Results: Mean follow-up was 180 +/- 2.9 SD days (N=65, 23 M and 42 F aged 34.25 +/- 8.07 years with disease duration of 6.80 +/- 4.33 years). There was no significant difference in the study parameters at baseline. Serum levels of liver enzymes (GGT, AST, and ALT) were serially monitored. Intervention was associated with liver function alteration in three groups. Significance decreased in EDSS score and the levels of liver enzymes were found in groups A and C, whereas elevated serum liver enzymes and EDSS score were observed in group B after the intervention. Conclusion: Selecting foods according to their Total antioxidant capacity such as co-supplemented hemp seed and evening primrose oils with Hot-nature diet affects antioxidant intake and can have beneficial effects on improving EDSS score and activity of liver enzymes in RRMS patients. CTLA-4: As an Immunosuppressive Immune Checkpoint in Breast Cancer

Shaho Ghahremani Dehbokri, Nazila Alizadeh, Alireza Isazadeh, Amir Baghbanzadeh, Soheil Abbaspour-Ravasjani, Khalil Hajiasgharzadeh, Behzad Baradaran

Summary: Breast cancer is a prevalent and deadly disease, and its incidence rate is increasing globally. Conventional treatment approaches, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, often yield unsatisfactory outcomes. Therefore, developing innovative strategies, such as immunotherapy, is crucial for effective breast cancer therapy. The blockade of immune checkpoints, particularly cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4), has shown promising results in cancer immunotherapy. The use of anti-CTLA-4 antibodies alone or in combination with other therapeutic agents enhances the tumor-suppressive effects of the immune system and improves cancer prognosis. Immune checkpoint inhibitors hold great potential for breast cancer treatment. This review discusses the role of CTLA-4 and its therapeutic potential in breast cancer therapeutics.

Acetyl carnitine modified liposomes elevate cisplatin uptake in macrophage and cancer cells

Fahimeh Zahednezhad, Parvin Zakeri-Milani, Javid Shahbazi Mojarrad, Muhammad Sarfraz, Mohammad Mahmoudian, Behzad Baradaran, Hadi Valizadeh

Summary: This study investigates the cellular uptake and cytotoxicity of surface-modified cisplatin (CisP) loaded liposomes in macrophage and cancer cells. Modified/un-modified liposomes were prepared and characterized for various properties. The results show that the modified liposomes demonstrate higher cellular uptake and increased cytotoxicity in the studied cells. Acetyl carnitine modification of CisP-liposomes can be considered an effective approach for increasing cellular uptake and cytotoxicity in cancer and macrophage cells.

Summary: This descriptive research analyzed the vascular territory and treatment outcomes in Iranian intravenous thrombolysis ischemic stroke patients based on data from the SITS registry. The results showed no significant association between vascular territory and mortality, functional independence, or brain hemorrhage occurrence. Age, diabetes, NIHSS score, and admission duration were identified as important predictors of three-month mortality, excellent outcome, and functional independence.

Diagnostic performance of CT scan-based radiomics for prediction of lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Zanyar HajiEsmailpoor, Peyman Tabnak, Behzad Baradaran, Fariba Pashazadeh, Leili Aghebati-Maleki

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of computed tomography (CT) scan-based radiomics in predicting lymph node metastasis (LNM) in gastric cancer (GC) patients. The results showed that there were differences in sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and area under the curve (AUC) between radiomics models and combined models. Subgroup analysis also found that different CT scan phases, regions of interest (ROIs), and segmentation methods had an impact on diagnostic accuracy. In conclusion, CT scan-based radiomics approach has the potential to predict LNM in GC patients preoperatively as a non-invasive diagnostic tool.

Serum Levels of Long Non-coding RNAs NEAT1, GAS5, and GAPLINC Altered in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Roghayeh Tofigh, Mohammadali Hosseinpourfeizi, Reza Safaralizadeh, Sepideh Ghoddusifar, Behzad Baradaran

Summary: This study identifies NEAT1, GAS5, and GAPLINC as promising serological biomarkers in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The reduced expression of NEAT1 and GAS5 suggests their potential roles as diagnostic and prognostic markers, while the significantly elevated average expression of GAPLINC in RA patients' serum samples indicates its potential as a biomarker candidate for disease stratification. TMEVPG1, on the other hand, displayed unaltered expression levels in RA samples.

The effect of glatiramer acetate, IFNβ-1a, fingolimod, and dimethyl fumarate on the expression of T-bet, IFN-γ, and MEG3 in PBMC of RRMS patients

Rozhin Dabbaghi, Reza Safaralizadeh, Shima Rahmani, Nesa Barpour, Mohammadali Hosseinpourfeizi, Ali Rajabi, Behzad Baradaran

Summary: This study investigates the role of T-bet, IFN-gamma, and MEG3 in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and their potential as diagnostic and therapeutic targets. The results show that T-bet expression is elevated in treatment-naive relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients compared to healthy individuals. RRMS patients treated with different disease modifying therapies (DMTs) exhibit downregulated T-bet and MEG3 expression levels, with more pronounced effects in females. The correlation between T-bet and MEG3 and between IFN-gamma and T-bet is observed in healthy individuals, while a strong positive correlation is found between MEG3 and IFN-gamma in RRMS patients treated with Glatiramer Acetate (GA). Remarkably, RRMS patients treated with Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF) show a significant positive correlation between T-bet and MEG3. These findings suggest the diagnostic potential of T-bet in RRMS and indicate the need for further exploration of the interplay between MEG3, T-bet, and IFN-gamma in RRMS patients.
