Summary: We demonstrated an organocatalytic asymmetric dearomatizing hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of benzene derivatives, which allows the synthesis of diverse stereochemically complex compounds and oxahelicenes. The high complexity and three-dimensionality of the products are crucial for their potential applications in materials science and drug discovery.

Summary: The organocatalytic asymmetric reactions of C2-unsubstituted racemic naphthyl-indoles with orthoalkynylnaphthols were used to synthesize axially chiral styrenes connected to an axially chiral naphthyl-indole unit. By employing chiral phosphoric acid as the catalyst, these axially chiral styrenes were obtained in good yields (up to 96%) and excellent stereoselectivity (up to >99.9% ee, >20:1 dr, and >99:1 E/Z) under mild conditions. Furthermore, further synthetic transformations were achieved with high yields and excellent stereocontrol.

Summary: In this study, the activation of diphenyl phosphite by BF3/BF4(-) resulted in the formation of thionium ions from aldehydes and thiophenols. These reactive species then reacted with in situ generated phenol, leading to the synthesis of diarylmethyl thioethers. It was found that the addition of external phenol in the reaction yielded unsymmetrical gem-diarylmethyl thioethers in good yields.

Summary: This paper investigates how lignin monomers derived from different pathways are fully incorporated into the lignin polymer through coupling and cross-coupling modes, evaluating the thermodynamics of these reactions using density functional theory calculations. The aim is to determine favorable coupling modes, explain experimental observations, and predict other potential pathways for further elucidation through in vitro polymerization aided by synthetic models and detailed structural studies.

Summary: A facile and regioselective Lewis acid-catalyzed cascade annulation of o-hydroxyphenyl propargyl amines with 4-hydroxycoumarin to afford furano[3,2-c]coumarin and pyrano[3,2-c]coumarin derivatives is reported. The reaction proceeds through the conjugate addition of 4-hydroxycoumarin to the in situ-generated alkynyl o-quinone methide followed by intramolecular 5-exo-dig and 6-endo-dig annulation to form furano[3,2-c]coumarins and pyrano[3,2-c]coumarins, respectively. The prepared o-hydroxyl substituted pyrano[3,2-c]coumarins can be easily transformed into the corresponding coumarin-derived dioxabicycles by acid-mediated cyclization.

Summary: An efficient electrochemical radical delta-H sulfonylation reaction of para-quinone methides and sodium sulfinates has been achieved under common laboratory conditions. The reaction allows for the construction of a new C(sp(2))-S bond to synthesize 4-((aryl,arylsulfonyl)methylene)-2,5-cyclohexadiene derivatives with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Further studies have shown that the reaction exhibits excellent regional selectivity.

Summary: We have successfully developed a photocatalyst- and additive-free radical hydroacylation reaction under mild reaction conditions. By utilizing 4-acyl-Hantzsch ester radical reservoirs, various substrates including Michael acceptors, enones, and para-quinone methides can be reacted. This protocol allows for further derivatizations and can also be extended to unactivated alkenes. Furthermore, the nature of the radical process has been investigated.

Summary: In this study, unsymmetrical polyarylated alkanes were synthesized using a cheap, commercially available Bronsted acid-catalytic system (pTSA center dot H2O)/HFIP. The one-pot three-component approach avoided the use of pyrophoric reagents, metal catalysts, toxic solvents, or Grignard reagents, and showed high greenness in terms of various green metrics. The method was also applied for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and natural product functionalization.

Summary: Five novel 1,1'-binaphthalene analogues with triphenylphosphonium salts as leaving groups were synthesized and used as photo-activatable DNA alkylating agents. The released naphthalenylmethyl-free radicals spontaneously transformed into cations, leading to DNA interstrand cross-link formation via alkylation. The substituents at position 4 affected both the efficiency and reaction rate of interstrand cross-linking. The TPP+ salts showed both lipophilic and hydrophilic properties, making them suitable for biological applications.

Summary: The E93 gene was identified and found to be widely distributed in adult tissues of the swimming crab. The expression levels of PtE93 mRNA in Y-organ and epidermis fluctuated during the molt cycle, suggesting its involvement in juvenile molting. Treatment with 20E induced PtE93 expression, while treatment with MF showed the opposite effect. The study also observed a negative correlation between PtE93 and ecdysteroid biosynthesis genes.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effects of partial dietary replacement of fish oil (FO) by vegetable oil (VO) and reduced ambient salinity on the fatty acid composition of C. labrosus juveniles. The results showed that C. labrosus is able to biosynthesise EPA and DHA from ALA, and low salinity conditions can upregulate the gene expression related to fatty acid metabolism. Fish reared on FO20 diet showed the highest amount of n-3 LC-PUFA in muscle.

Summary: Metal pollution has significant effects on aquatic environments, and metallothioneins play important roles in maintaining metal homeostasis and detoxification. This study identified two metallothionein-coding transcripts in Gammarus fossarum and investigated their organ-specific expression patterns. The results showed that mt1 was more strongly induced after cadmium exposure, and mt1 was more highly induced in the caeca compared to the gills for any metal exposure. Additionally, mt2 was more inducible in the gills than in the caeca for cadmium and zinc exposure at the individual level.

Summary: Swimming has physiological effects on farmed fish, but the potential link between swimming and oxidative stress is still poorly understood. This study investigated the impact of different moderate swimming conditions on the antioxidant status of gilthead seabream, revealing that swimming modulated the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the liver and skeletal muscle. Adequate swimming conditions were found to minimize oxidative stress in gilthead seabream.
