Summary: This study presents a novel platform for solubilizing fatty acids using amino acids and investigates the tumoricidal activity and mechanism of undecylenic acid. The results demonstrate that the GS-1 formulation, a combination of undecylenic acid and L-Arginine, induces concentration-dependent tumor cell death through a pro-apoptotic mechanism. GS-1 localizes to lipid droplets intracellularly and is taken up by cells via Fatty Acid Transport Protein 2 (FATP2). These findings contribute to the emerging field of fatty acids as potential anti-cancer therapeutics.

Summary: A diet rich in lard increases the risk of prostate cancer development and progression. Two mouse models fed with lard-enriched diets showed enhanced prostate cancer progression and weight gain compared to a fish oil diet. The composition of gut microbiota differed significantly between the two diets, with changes in bacterial species such as Clostridiales and Lactobacillales. The proportion of Lactobacillales in the gut was negatively associated with weight gain and prostate cancer progression. The study also identified genes involved in lipid metabolism and cholesterol biosynthesis that correlated with the abundance of Lactobacillales in the gut.

Dietary fat intake was not related to ESCC risk.

Summary: In this study, it was found that tannic acid, a cheap and natural polyphenol, could regulate the metabolic and physiological properties of the oleaginous microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum to increase the production of biocompounds. Tannic acid enhanced algal biomass and lipids by regulating key metabolic pathways without affecting photosynthesis. It also facilitated the overproduction of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as EPA and DHA. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that tannic acid upregulated the expression of genes involved in lipogenesis. These findings provide insights into the potential applications of polyphenols as chemical modulators.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effects of partial dietary replacement of fish oil (FO) by vegetable oil (VO) and reduced ambient salinity on the fatty acid composition of C. labrosus juveniles. The results showed that C. labrosus is able to biosynthesise EPA and DHA from ALA, and low salinity conditions can upregulate the gene expression related to fatty acid metabolism. Fish reared on FO20 diet showed the highest amount of n-3 LC-PUFA in muscle.

Summary: Metal pollution has significant effects on aquatic environments, and metallothioneins play important roles in maintaining metal homeostasis and detoxification. This study identified two metallothionein-coding transcripts in Gammarus fossarum and investigated their organ-specific expression patterns. The results showed that mt1 was more strongly induced after cadmium exposure, and mt1 was more highly induced in the caeca compared to the gills for any metal exposure. Additionally, mt2 was more inducible in the gills than in the caeca for cadmium and zinc exposure at the individual level.

Summary: Swimming has physiological effects on farmed fish, but the potential link between swimming and oxidative stress is still poorly understood. This study investigated the impact of different moderate swimming conditions on the antioxidant status of gilthead seabream, revealing that swimming modulated the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the liver and skeletal muscle. Adequate swimming conditions were found to minimize oxidative stress in gilthead seabream.
