The main objective of this study was to explore the interactive influence of broiler litter and chemical nitrogen (N)-phosphorus (P) fertilizers placed with furrower and with disk + furrower on maize yield and soil chemical properties. The experiment consisted of two methods of fertilizer placements and seven fertilizer treatments conducted for two successive years under field conditions. Results showed that furrower method improved soil chemical properties and subsequently increased maize grain yield and dry-matter production compared with the disk + furrower method. The N and P levels in soil increased with the application of NP fertilizers and broiler litter. Soils amended with broiler litter and NP fertilizers had greater maize grain yield and dry-matter production than the control. In conclusion, furrower placement combined with the application of broiler litter and 20% of the optimum chemical NP fertilizers were the most efficient nutrient management practice for increasing maize performance in the studied area.

Compost application increases the ecological dose values in a non-calcareous agricultural soil contaminated with cadmium

Fayez Raiesi, Leila Dayani

Summary: Soil cadmium pollution from human activities is a major concern for microbial and biochemical functions. Organic amendments can reduce Cd toxicity and increase ecological dose values. The application of compost can decrease Cd availability and mitigate the negative impact of Cd on soil microbial and biochemical functions, resulting in higher ecological dose values compared to unamended soils.

Salinity-induced changes in cadmium availability affect soil microbial and biochemical functions: Mitigating role of biochar

Nahid Azadi, Fayez Raiesi

Summary: The application of sugarcane bagasse biochar can improve soil microbial and biochemical functions under stress conditions, such as Cd contamination and salinity, by increasing soil organic carbon content, immobilizing Cd, and supplying C substrate for microbial activity. The study suggests that biochar produced at 400 degrees C is more effective in improving soil microbial properties and functioning compared to biochar produced at 600 degrees C.

Salinization depresses soil enzyme activity in metal-polluted soils through increases in metal mobilization and decreases in microbial biomass

Nahid Azadi, Fayez Raiesi

Summary: High salinity can increase the mobilization of Cd and Pb in soil, leading to a significant decrease in soil enzymatic activity and nutrient cycling, with a more pronounced effect in the presence of combined metal pollution.

Soil phosphorus pools and cycling as affected by changing land-uses in a semi-steppe ecosystem

Summary: Land-use changes have a significant impact on soil phosphorus pools and turnover, especially with varying slope aspects. Abandonment of wheat cultivation leads to a major recovery of soil phosphorus pools and cycling, improving soil functions and quality.

Developing a soil quality index model for assessing landscape-level soil quality along a toposequence in almond orchards using factor analysis

Fayez Raiesi, Mehran Tavakoli

Summary: This study aimed to develop a soil quality index (SQI) model for assessing topsoil quality in a commercial almond plantation. Four out of 16 soil properties, including microbial biomass carbon, and available forms of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, were identified as the most representative indicators for the minimum data set. The results showed a relatively high spatial variability of soil quality along the toposequence, with backslope positions exhibiting the lowest soil quality due to surface soil movement and water erosion.

Summary: Improving medicinal plants' performance in semi-arid regions facing climate change could support sustainable food and agriculture production. The use of zinc oxide nanoparticles for foliar applications can enhance zinc biofortification, primary productivity, and secondary metabolite production in medicinally important plants like Dracocephalum moldavica.

Biochar alleviates metal toxicity and improves microbial community functions in a soil co-contaminated with cadmium and lead

Nahid Azadi, Fayez Raiesi

Summary: The application of biochar in soils contaminated with heavy metals can alleviate the toxic effects on microbial functions by decreasing metal availability and increasing organic carbon content. Biochar also enhances microbial activity and enzymatic activity in co-polluted soils, largely through the promotion of labile carbon for microbial assimilation and metal immobilization. The improvement of soil microbial quality by low-temperature biochar is more effective than high-temperature biochar in mitigating the combined effects of metal stresses in polluted soils.
