Aim Abdominal pain, defaecation disorder and change of bowel habit are the commonest symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The effect of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (MSB) was assessed on the severity of symptoms in patients with IBS. Method Sixty-six patients treated with one of the standard pharmacological therapies for at least 3 months were included in the study. They were randomized to receive MSB as a supplemental treatment to standard therapy or to receiving a placebo. Previous pharmacological therapy was continued throughout the study in both arms. Clinical evaluation was performed at baseline, 4 and 12 weeks. Each assessment was documented by a validated visual analogue score questionnaire measuring the severity of selected clinical symptoms, a closed-end questionnaire measuring the frequency of selected clinical symptoms and a single closed-end question measuring the subjective improvement of symptoms. Results After 4 weeks there was a significant decrease of pain during defaecation in the MSB group which extended to improvement of urgency and bowel habit at 12 weeks. Reduction of abdominal pain, flatulence and disordered defaecation was not statistically significant. Conclusions MSB as a supplemental therapy can reduce the frequency of selected clinical symptoms in patients with IBS, without significant influence on reducing symptom severity.

Differential correlation network analysis of rectal transcriptomes reveals cystic fibrosis-related disturbance

Jan K. Nowak, Cyntia J. Szymanska, Jaroslaw Walkowiak

Summary: In this study, an unsupervised differential correlation network reanalysis of rectal transcriptomic data revealed promising targets for mechanistic research of intestinal pathology in cystic fibrosis (CF), including FAU, SRP14, and GDI2. These genes may be involved in a compensatory protein trafficking mechanism in the CF rectum, highlighting their potential therapeutic value.

Summary: Paleogenetics has undergone significant changes since its inception. Initially, limited molecular techniques hindered ancient DNA analysis. However, advancements in scientific tools, as well as the popularity of this field, have led to remarkable achievements. Breakthroughs in next-generation sequencing technologies and DNA isolation protocols have enabled the sequencing of whole genomes even from highly fragmented aDNA samples.

Summary: The coexistence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with pancreatic pathology is rare in children. A retrospective analysis of data from 1538 children diagnosed with IBD in 2014-2021 found that 11.4% of them had pancreatic involvement (PI), with acute pancreatitis (AP) diagnosed in 43.8% and asymptomatic hyperlipasemia (HL) or hyperamylasemia (HA) observed in 50.0%. Routine monitoring of pancreatic enzymes should be performed in patients with IBD, especially after the initiation of azathioprine (AZA) treatment.

Transcriptomic Context of RUNX3 Expression in Monocytes: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Emilia Dybska, Jan Krzysztof Nowak, Jaroslaw Walkowiak

Summary: The study investigates the transcriptomic context of RUNX3 expression in blood monocytes and reveals its strong associations with genes involved in cell growth, signal transduction, and chromosome organization. The findings suggest that RUNX3 plays a role in regulating cell function and immune response.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of CLA supplementation on bone mineral density and content in overweight or obese women. The results showed that three-month CLA supplementation did not improve bone health in this population. However, long-term intervention studies are needed to further investigate the potential benefits of CLA on bone health.

Summary: This meta-analysis compared the effects of endurance, strength, and combined training on inflammatory markers and adipokine concentrations in overweight and obese adults. The findings suggest that endurance training is more effective than strength training in reducing CRP, IL-6, and visfatin concentrations, while combined training is more beneficial in reducing TNF-alpha levels. There were no differences between the effects of different types of training on adiponectin and leptin concentrations. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal training for adiponectin and leptin concentrations in this population.

Anthropometric Parameters in Patients with Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders: A Case-Control Study, Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Maria Wasiewicz-Gajdzis, Malgorzata Jamka, Jakub Geltz, Kamila Bokayeva, Lukasz Kaluzny, Joanna Jaglowska, Jaroslaw Walkowiak

Summary: This study compared the anthropometric parameters of patients with fatty acid oxidation disorders (FAOD) and healthy controls, finding a higher prevalence of abnormal body weight (overweight and obesity) in the FAOD group. Significant differences in body weight percentiles, BMI, BMI percentiles, and BMI z-scores were observed between FAOD patients and controls in the cohort. However, the meta-analysis did not show any differences in weight and BMI in all tested subgroups. Caution should be exercised when interpreting these results due to the low quality of evidence, small sample sizes, and significant heterogeneity of the included data.
