Summary: Three types of graphene oxides (GOs) were prepared and used for the removal of Cr(VI). The adsorption performance of GOs was affected by initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and temperature. The adsorption mechanisms involved redox reaction, electrostatic attraction, pore filling, ion exchange, and complexation. The adsorption processes were mainly monolayer chemisorption and equilibrium could be reached in 30 min. The saturation adsorption capacities of GO-M1, GO-M2, and GO-M3 for Cr(VI) were estimated to be 3.5412 mg.g(-1), 2.3631 mg.g(-1), and 7.0358 mg.g(-1), respectively. The adsorption processes of Cr(VI) by GOs were endothermic, entropy-driven, and thermodynamically spontaneous and feasible. These findings provide important insights into the mechanism and application of Cr(VI) removal by GOs.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the concurrent adsorption of humic acid (HA) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) by powdered activated carbon (PAC) in water. It was found that the presence of humic acid significantly enhanced the adsorption of both HA and Cr(VI). The promotion effect of humic acid on Cr(VI) removal was found to decrease with increasing pH. The cooperative adsorption mechanism was attributed to the formation of Cr(VI)-HA and Cr(III)-HA complexes that were readily adsorbed on the PAC surfaces.

Summary: In this research, a novel green tillite-based adsorbent (CMT) was synthesized by modifying the surface of natural/pristine tillite (PT) with Chrysophyllum albidum stem bark extract. CMT showed higher efficiency and adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) removal compared to most materials used for this purpose. The results also demonstrated the reusability of CMT and the chemisorption as the rate-controlling step. This study highlights the potential of Chrysophyllum albidum stem bark extract anchored on tillite as a green adsorbent for efficient Cr(VI) removal from polluted water.

Summary: The adsorption of diclofenac (DCF), a common pharmaceutical pollutant, on Fe2O3-pillared montmorillonites (Fe-PMts) was studied. Fe-PMts were synthesized by intercalation of natural montmorillonite with iron polyoxocations. The pillaring process significantly increased the specific surface area and sorption capacity of the clay. The pH, sorbent content, DCF concentration, and temperature were found to be the main factors affecting DCF adsorption. The kinetic data and adsorption isotherm were analyzed using various models, and the results showed that the adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of DCF on Fe-PMt was spontaneous and exothermic. Fe-PMt was proven to be an effective and environmentally friendly sorbent for DCF removal in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Summary: A novel struvite-humic acid composite (S-HA) derived from an anaerobic digestate showed high adsorption and reduction capacities for chromium (VI). The composite contained higher amounts of oxygen-containing and aromatic functional groups and had a larger specific surface area. XPS analysis revealed that a portion of the bonded Cr (VI) was reduced to Cr (III). These findings demonstrate the outstanding potential of the struvite-humic acid composite for chromium adsorption and reduction.

Summary: Humic acid is a promising remediation agent for removing heavy metals from contaminated water and soil. This study focused on the adsorption and immobilization characteristics of Pb(II) by coal-based and bio-based humic acids (CHA and BHA) in water and soil. The results showed that CHA and BHA had highly efficient Pb(II) adsorption capacities and immobilization effects, mainly through ion exchange, surface complexation, and electrostatic attraction mechanisms. This suggests that CHA and BHA could be used as green and efficient adsorbents for the removal and immobilization of Pb(II) from wastewater and soil.

Summary: This study investigates the formation, stability, and transport behavior of NOM-Cr(iii) colloids in aquatic environments. The results show that the formation and stability of NOM-Cr(iii) colloids depend on the C/Cr ratio and NOM source. The stability of the colloids is enhanced through electrostatic and steric interactions, and they can remain stable in river waters and groundwaters with low electrolyte concentrations.

Summary: In this study, a highly effective surfactant producer strain, Bacillus Cereus GX7, was isolated from the oil tank bottom sludge of Shengli Oil Field in China. The biosurfactant produced by GX7 was identified as surfactin, a lipopeptide surfactant, through TLC, FT-IR, and LC-MS/MS analysis. The fermentation process of GX7 was optimized using single-factor experiments, focusing on the composition of fermentation medium and fermentation conditions. Glucose and peptone were found to be the best carbon and nitrogen sources, and the optimum temperature, inoculum amount, pH, rotation speed, and fermentation time for the strain were determined to be 30°C, 1%, 7.5, 150 rpm, and 48 h, respectively. After optimization, the surface tension and emulsification index of the fermentation broth were 26.84 mN/m and 57.84%, respectively. Furthermore, the biosurfactant produced by GX7 demonstrated good stability over a wide range of temperature, pH, and salt concentration.

Summary: Effective management of biofluids is crucial for in vivo surgical interventions. Recent advances include self-sealing needles, drug-eluting stents, and shear-thinning hydrogels. However, complications associated with intestinal mucosal injury and secondary damage still persist. In this study, researchers developed an interpenetrating Janus wettability stent coating that enables unidirectional draining of excessive biofluid. They also demonstrated directional biofluid movement using a self-pumping dressing with potential applications in biofluid collection and disease diagnosis through metal ion detection. This integrated system presents an opportunity for designing wound dressings with effective biofluid management and metal ion detection capabilities.
