Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are bio-electrochemical devices which can generate electricity by electrochemical reactions using microorganisms as biocatalysts. In order to improve the energy output in MFC system, alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod and chitosan (CS) based on layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled technique were used to modify the ITO as the anode. This modification strategy ensured a relatively high content of Fe2O3 nanorod within the polymer matrix according to results. The MFC with modified anode produced a higher quantity of electricity output with 320% enhancement comparing with the bare anode, and the MFC with the (Fe2O3/CS)(4)/ITO anode could produce the highest current comparing with other modified anode. The Fe2O3 nanorod-based LBL modified electrode is promising for the development of the MFC. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
