Summary: Polystyrene latexes were prepared using surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, with the stabilizing moiety originating from either ACPA, AA, or PAA-b-PS. The different stabilizing moieties resulted in different nucleation mechanisms and hence different particle sizes. The average size of the latex particles ranged from 1.3 microns to 50 nm.

Summary: Monodisperse bio-based polymer particles were prepared through dispersion polymerization. The particle size can be controlled by changing the composition of the reaction medium or PVP concentration. 100% bio-based PMBL particles were also prepared using hydrolyzed PMBL as a colloidal stabilizer.

Summary: This study introduces a method to improve direct to garment inkjet printing on textiles. By controlling the composition and ratio of the surface treatment agent, the color strength and wet rubbing fastness can be improved. The optimal conditions for the surface treatment agent can be determined by adjusting the ratio of components.

Summary: In this study, a one-step method for the preparation of monodispersed nanoparticles using soap-free emulsion polymerization with sodium p-styrene sulfonate as ionic comonomer was achieved. The experimental results showed that the particle number increased with NaSS concentration, reaching a maximum at 10 wt% NaSS concentration, resulting in the smallest particle size nanoparticles. Furthermore, the particle size distribution gradually narrowed during the polymerization reaction.

Summary: The study found that ionic monomers significantly increase emulsion stability and improve the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. The concentration of ionogenic monomers in inverse emulsions can change the interfacial tension kinetics pattern. Radical copolymerization has no significant effect on the particle size and stability of inverse emulsions.

Summary: A novel mediated agent, TPPT, was successfully synthesized and used in the radical polymerization of butyl acrylate at 50 degrees C. The reaction kinetics showed that monomer conversion reached 84% within 24 hours with narrow molecular weight distributions. MALDI-TOF MS studies identified three polymerization mechanisms, indicating the effectiveness of TPPT in capturing growing radicals and forming stable chains.

Summary: Polyacrylate latexes with uniform particle size and excellent dispersion were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization. The effect of grafting agent type on the residual double bonds of the seed latex was investigated. The PVC/ACR blend prepared by emulsion grafting polymerization reached a brittle-toughness transition at an ACR content of 8 phr, and showed significantly improved impact strength compared to traditional ACR-prepared PVC/ACR blend.

Summary: Cross-linked acrylate latex pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were synthesized and their properties were investigated. It was found that the viscosity and particle size of the latexes were not affected by the amount of cross-linker used. The water resistance and thermal stability of the adhesive films were improved with increasing cross-linker content. However, the loop tack and peel strength decreased.

Summary: The study focused on the synthesis of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized carbon nanotubes through in situ emulsion polymerization. Characterization techniques such as FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies were used to investigate the chemical structure and drug release capability. The release profile of hydrocortisone in some nanocomposites was found to be influenced by a change in hydrogen bond balance.

Summary: Particle size determination in optically dense systems is usually expensive or requires dilution of samples. This study investigates turbidimetry as a potentially robust and inexpensive alternative. Through experiments on emulsion copolymerizations, precise particle size data were obtained in real-time, and a reliable system-related calibration method was developed to track the particle size changes.

Summary: High-solid-content polystyrene and polyvinyl acetate dispersions with a mean particle diameter of 50 nm to 500 nm and solid content of 12-55% (w/w) were produced and characterized. Different particle size measurement techniques were used to analyze the dispersions and compared to inline measurements via photon density wave spectroscopy. The analysis showed that particle size measurements of undiluted polystyrene dispersions were consistent, but size determination for polyvinyl acetate particles was challenging due to bound water in the polymer. An iterative approach was used to determine water-swelling factors and analyze the physical properties of the swollen particles.

Summary: Organic-inorganic nanocomposite particles were successfully prepared via Pickering emulsion polymerization using non-functionalized silica nanoparticles. Monodisperse nanocomposite particles with high silica incorporation efficiency were obtained. The wetting effect and electrostatic interaction were found to facilitate the adhesion of silica nanoparticles onto the growing latex particles.

Summary: Coagulative nucleation in the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate (MMA-BA) is reported under monomer-starved conditions in latexes with high solid content and low surfactant concentrations. The use of semicontinuous emulsion heterophase polymerization (SEHP) allows the synthesis of latex with high colloidal stability. The study investigates the particle size, surfactant coverage area, particle coagulation rate, and other parameters during the copolymerization process.

Summary: This study investigates the modification of latex polymers to improve paint performance. Different functional monomers are added to styrene and n-butyl acrylate latex polymers to enhance scrub resistance, adhesion on surfaces, and control hydrophobicity and color efficiency of the paints. The results confirm that the addition of these functional monomers improves the paint properties.

Summary: Gradient copolymers of n-butyl acrylate (nBA) and isobornyl acrylate (IBA) were prepared using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization. The stepwise monomer addition process allowed for pre-specified gradient compositions to be obtained. H-1 NMR characterization revealed the gradient behavior of the copolymers. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that gradient copolymers had broader glass-transition regions compared to homopolymers and statistical copolymers. The thermal properties of the copolymers can be controlled by the choice of comonomer feed composition and the steepness of the comonomer feed.
