Summary: There is substantial evidence supporting a direct correlation between cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea may be considered a modifiable risk factor for cognitive dysfunction. Recent research focuses on examining the relationship and underlying mechanisms between obstructive sleep apnea and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers, as well as evaluating the potential benefits of obstructive sleep apnea therapy on cognitive function.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The results showed that the BMI of the OSAS group was significantly higher than the non-OSAS group, but there were no significant differences in reflux symptom index (RSI) and reflux finding score (RFS) between the two groups. There was also no significant correlation between RSI/RFS and AHI (apnea-hypopnea index).

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea is common in heart failure patients and can worsen their condition. Positive airway pressure treatment consistently improves sleep apnea index, ejection fraction, oxygen saturation, and quality of life. Recent studies suggest that certain medications may also impact sleep apnea outcomes through weight loss, improved metabolic profiles, and effects on upper airway muscles.

Summary: This study found that older patients are more likely to have severe positional obstructive sleep apnea (p-OSA) and suggests that clinicians should consider positional therapy as an alternative or adjunct to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for older patients with cognitive impairment unable to tolerate CPAP therapy.

Summary: The study investigates the glymphatic system in subjects with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The results reveal abnormal glymphatic system function in OSA patients, which may contribute to increased risks for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study suggests that the APLS method can be used to assess the glymphatic system in OSA patients.

Summary: SDB is highly prevalent but underdiagnosed in older U.S. adults, with only 32% of those reporting symptoms being diagnosed with sleep apnea. Older adults with SDB are significantly more likely to have impaired odor identification but not odor sensitivity.

Summary: Untreated OSA patients showed decreasing relative rCBF in the left hippocampus and the right parahippocampal gyrus over time, while treated patients exhibited an increasing trend. No changes were observed in the control group over time.

Summary: The article reviews dental sleep medicine in older adults based on literature. Sleep physiology differs between older and younger adults, with sleep disturbances occurring more frequently in older adults. Common sleep disorders in older adults include insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing, periodic limb movement disorder, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. Obstructive sleep apnea is more prevalent in older adults, and the treatment with mandibular advancement devices may be less effective and more complex due to potential impairments in oral and dental health. The prevalence of edentulism in older adults is decreasing while life expectancy is increasing.

Summary: Recent studies have found associations between obstructive sleep apnea and cognitive decline, but the mechanisms are still unclear. This study investigated the relationships between changes in sleep spindle micro-architecture and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults, with a focus on sex differences. The results showed that sleep spindle density and percentage of fast spindles were positively associated with some verbal fluency measures. Sex might play a role in these associations. The severity of obstructive sleep apnea was not found to be a contributing factor in this non-clinical community-dwelling cohort.

Summary: State-level and regional disparities in PAP treatment and adherence among older Americans with OSA were found in this study, with higher proportions of treatment in Midwest states and lower adherence rates in Southern states and California. Variability in treatment patterns within states was evident along the East and West coasts.

Summary: The study found that in community-dwelling older adults, women with risks of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and insomnia are more likely to present frailty. Therefore, strategies aimed at improving sleep hygiene and detecting patients with OSA and insomnia are needed.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the accuracy of the oxyhemoglobin desaturation index (ODI) compared to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) using a portable monitor. The results showed a significant positive correlation between ODI and AHI, with high sensitivity and accuracy in identifying the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Oximetry is a promising strategy for diagnosing OSA.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of resistance training on the respiratory event index (REI) of older adults with moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The results showed that 12 weeks of resistance training significantly changed the REI and was well tolerated. Changes in body water content may contribute to the reduction in REI.

Summary: As the patient population aged older than 65 years increases, it becomes crucial to recognize and treat skin conditions seen in this age group. Treatment choices should take into consideration the physiological characteristics of older adults, their long medication lists, and their social living conditions. Simple regimens with low risk of drug interactions should be prescribed to these patients to enhance their quality of life.

Summary: The evidence for age-related effects on wound healing is mostly based on empirical observations without adjusting for confounding factors. Skin structure changes with aging, but the impact on unexposed skin seems to be minimal. The clinical impact of these changes on acute wound healing appears to be small compared to other factors. Poor healing of chronic wounds, mainly observed in older populations, is often attributed to comorbid conditions rather than age alone.
