Summary: This study analyzed the cases of sporotrichosis reported in the past 10 years in the Americas. Among 12,568 patients, male and South American cases were the most common. The most prevalent etiological agents were the Sporothrix complex/Sporothrix spp. and S. schenckii. Lymphocutaneous infection was the most frequent form of the disease.

Summary: We developed a hydrophilic gel containing ITZ (HGN-ITZ) as a potential strategy for the treatment of sporotrichosis. Clinical evaluation showed promising results with complete healing of lesions and no signs of topical irritation during treatment, suggesting the potential of HGN-ITZ in the treatment of sporotrichosis.

Summary: Zoonotic outbreaks of Sporothrix brasiliensis, the fungal pathogen causing cat-transmitted sporotrichosis (CTS), are increasing in Brazil. The incidence of sporotrichosis has significantly risen from 0.3 cases/100,000 outpatient visit-years in 2011 to 21.4 cases/100,000 outpatient visit-years in 2021. The main clinical form of sporotrichosis is lymphocutaneous (63%), followed by localized cutaneous (24%), ocular (10%), multisite infections (3%), and cutaneous disseminated (<0.5%). The continuous transmission of CTS calls for increased clinician and public awareness as well as preventive efforts.

Summary: This study used spatial data analysis to examine the occurrence of canine sporotrichosis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and its correlation with socioeconomic characteristics. The findings showed that the disease is concentrated in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro and the adjacent metropolitan area, with cases occurring in areas where most dwellings are houses. The disease density was not associated with extreme poverty, and areas with a higher concentration of cases had a lower proportion of households without paving.

Summary: In this study, six clinical isolates of Sporothrix schenckii complex from Abancay, Peru were identified using PCR-sequencing of the calmodulin gene. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that these isolates clustered with sequences from other countries, indicating the presence of S. schenckii (sensu stricto) in Abancay, Peru.

Summary: This study systematically reviews the emergency, diagnosis, clinical symptoms, therapeutics, and control strategies of zoonotic sporotrichosis. The study finds that Brazil has experienced an unprecedented outbreak of sporotrichosis in recent decades. Advances in understanding the Sporothrix genus have allowed researchers to identify characteristics that contribute to infection and invasion, particularly in the main species involved, S. braziliensis. Correct diagnosis, early treatment, responsible ownership of animals, and reproductive control programs for felines are crucial for controlling this zoonotic disease.

Summary: Sporothrix brasiliensis is the main agent of zoonotic sporotrichosis transmitted by domestic cats in South America. Fungal virulence factors, including thermotolerance, resistance to oxidative stress, and enzyme production, were evaluated in 24 strains of S. brasiliensis from 12 familiar outbreaks of cat-to-human transmitted sporotrichosis. The strains showed moderate to high thermotolerance, susceptibility to hydrogen peroxide, and production of hemolysins. There was no significant difference in the virulence-associated factors studied among different hosts, suggesting the zoonotic transmission of S. brasiliensis in Brazil and its plasticity in producing virulence factors.

Summary: This study examined the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of sporotrichosis in China and specifically Jilin Province. The results showed that Jilin Province has a high incidence of sporotrichosis, with a higher prevalence in farmers and during the winter and spring seasons. Fixed type infection is the most common. The study also analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of sporotrichosis in China, identifying Jilin Province as the most affected area.

Summary: This study analyzed the association between the presence and characteristics of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) and location in stress-bearing and non-stress-bearing areas. The results showed that ALM is more common in stress-bearing areas, and cases with a history of direct trauma were also more frequent. ALMs in stress-bearing areas had a greater Breslow thickness and higher ulceration rates. These findings support the role of mechanical stress in the pathogenesis of ALM.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the B cell phenotype in Colombian SLE patients of mixed ancestry and its possible associations with disease activity, clinical manifestations, DNA methylation status, and environmental exposures. The results showed that certain B cell subgroups were expanded in relation to disease activity and nephritis, while DNA hypomethylation and environmental exposures may also play a role in the development of the disease.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate perceived organizational support and empowerment behaviors in breast cancer survivors who are actively employed in an oncology reference center. Descriptive study was conducted to collect data on sociodemographic, work-related, clinical characteristics, treatment sequelae, empowerment behaviors, and perceived organizational support. Results showed that nearly 90% of women retained their jobs prior to diagnosis and 69% reported unchanged income. The majority of participants perceived low organizational support, which varied according to the presence of treatment sequelae. 49.6% of participants had fully adopted empowering behaviors that significantly varied with age, sequelae presence, perceived organizational support, and return-to-work time.
