Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of osteopathy and biofeedback in the treatment of dyssynergic defecation. The short-term results showed both treatments were effective, with some differences observed between the two. Long-term follow-up results indicated that osteopathy has promising long-lasting effects in treating dyssynergic defecation.

Summary: There is variation in the management approach for patients with obstructed defecatory symptoms between gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons. Gastroenterologists are more likely to refer for anorectal manometry while colorectal surgeons are more likely to refer for dynamic imaging. Knowledge of dynamic imaging findings influences treatment decisions for both specialties.

Summary: This study evaluates the efficacy of Ventral Prosthesis Rectopexy (VPR) for treating Obstructed Defecation Syndrome (ODS) and found a significant improvement in constipation symptoms within the 12-month postoperative period. Most patients experienced symptomatic relief and improved constipation-like symptoms and fecal incontinence for at least 1-2 years after surgery, with some studies indicating sustained improvement even after longer follow-up.

Summary: The study evaluated the trends in surgical management of obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) over a 10-year period in Italian referral centers. The data showed that surgical techniques varied depending on the clinical scenarios and sphincter function. The complexity of ODS treatment was highlighted by the changing trend in surgical management over time.

Summary: This study compared the changes in Rintala scores in children with FC and ODS managed by BT injection, BMP, and SBL, versus a control group managed by only BMP and SBL. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups, indicating that BT injection did not provide additional improvement in defecatory function when assessed by Rintala score.

Summary: Through magnetic resonance defecography and statistical shape modeling, it was found that obstructed defecation is related to pelvic floor shape variations. Significant differences in pelvic floor shape were identified among women with and without OD and during different states and groups.

Summary: Obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) is a common form of constipation that significantly affects patients' quality of life. The Stapled Trans-Anal Rectal Resection (STARR) procedure introduced by Longo in 2004 has shown to be a minimally invasive approach for correcting mechanical disorders associated with ODS. This study reviewed the literature on preoperative assessment, operative features, and outcomes of the STARR technique for ODS treatment. The findings suggest that the STARR surgical procedure is safe and effective in treating ODS symptoms and improving patients' quality of life. The development of international guidelines is necessary to optimize the diagnostic and therapeutic process and enhance treatment outcomes.

Summary: Rectocele is a common pelvic floor disorder with symptoms of prolonged straining and splinting. Surgery may be necessary for symptomatic cases, and pelvic approaches, including transperineal repair, have gained attention. This study analyzed the outcomes of 50 patients who underwent transperineal rectocele repair, showing successful relief of symptoms and low complications.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) among patients who underwent hemorrhoidectomy and to assess the correlation between preoperative constipation score and postoperative patients' satisfaction. The study included 120 patients, and 24.2% of them had obstructed defecation. The postoperative constipation score significantly improved and had a negative correlation with preoperative total constipation score. Therefore, routine preoperative measurement of ODS is recommended for patients who need further evaluation and counseling.

Summary: For patients with obstructed defecation syndrome, laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVR) appears to provide sustained improvements in functional outcomes and Health-Related Quality of Life for internal and/or rectocele prolapse, without exacerbating constipation. Additionally, the procedure has low morbidity and recurrence rates.

Summary: Constipation is a common symptom that can be classified into obstructed defecation and prolonged bowel transit time. Clinical diagnosis of obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) requires detailed history and various examinations. Non-surgical management is the initial treatment for ODS patients, while biofeedback therapy is the primary treatment for dyssynergic defecation. Surgical interventions may be considered for certain patients.

Summary: In this study, the records of 754 women with pelvic floor dysfunction and normal anorectal anatomy were retrospectively evaluated. The authors aimed to determine the role of parity in the development of obstructed defecatory symptoms, specifically investigating the potential neuropathic effect of pregnancy and childbirth. The results suggest that parity is unlikely to be a significant cause of obstructed defecation in women with normal anorectal anatomy.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between postoperative anxiety/depression and functional outcomes in patients with obstructed defecation who underwent laparoscopic ventral rectopexy (LVR). The results showed that postoperative anxiety/depression did not undermine the long-term functional outcomes of LVR in patients with overt pelvic structural abnormalities.

Summary: Surgical treatment including laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy and sigmoid colon resection was effective in improving obstructed defecation syndrome caused by internal rectal prolapse and anterior rectocele with associated dolichocolon in a 39-year-old woman, with no postoperative complications and significant symptom improvement at 6 months follow-up.
