Summary: Patients with a history of solid organ transplant undergoing total hip arthroplasty for osteonecrosis of the femoral head are not necessarily at an increased risk of early postoperative complications, but they utilize more hospital resources, have longer length of stay, and have a higher risk of hospital readmission.

Summary: Gaucher disease is a common lysosomal storage disorder and its most critical consequence is bone complications. Osteonecrosis of the femoral head leads to osteoarthritis and can be managed through hip arthroplasty. Enzyme replacement therapy has reduced the prevalence of osteonecrosis events in patients.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the rates, causes, and independent risk factors of unplanned readmissions after THA in ONFH patients within one year. The results showed that higher risks of unplanned readmission were associated with age > 60 years, urban residence, ARCO stage IV, and smoking.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the mid- and long-term efficacy of bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) in the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Meta-analysis of relevant trials showed that BMMNCs treatment significantly reduced the rate of total hip arthroplasty, radiographic progression rate, and visual analog score at 24 months, while improving Harris hip score, improvement of visual analog score at 24 months, and Merle D'Aubigne and Postel hip score. Furthermore, BMMNCs treatment did not increase the incidence of complications. These findings suggest that BMMNCs therapy may be a preferred option for treating ONFH.

Summary: The treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head focuses on early intervention to preserve the native hip articulation, reduce pain, and improve function. There is controversy regarding the efficacy of surgical strategies, with a need to compare failure rates and conversion to total hip arthroplasty rates for different treatment options.

Summary: In patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), vascularized iliac bone graft (VIBG) may be a reasonable joint-preserving surgery option to delay total hip arthroplasty (THA) without compromising overall survivorship and clinical outcomes. However, higher THA revision rates were associated with smoking and binge drinking.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in bone microarchitecture, bone remodeling activity, and histomorphological characteristics between glucocorticoid-associated osteonecrosis of femoral head (GONFH) and alcohol-associated osteonecrosis of femoral head (AONFH). The results showed that GONFH exhibited a less sclerotic bone microarchitecture and a more active bone metabolic status in both the reactive interface and normal region. These differences might contribute to the development of disease-modifying strategies and treatments for osteonecrosis of femoral head.

Summary: This study showed that autologous osteoblastic cells combined with core decompression did not provide any advantage in improving early-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Adverse events related to treatment were rare and generally mild in both groups, although there might be a potential risk associated with cell expansion. Based on the findings, the combination of osteoblastic cells and core decompression is not recommended for patients with early-stage ONFH. Further well-designed studies should be conducted to explore other biological approaches that may improve the overall results of core decompression.

Summary: This study examined the use of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings and HRCT scores to predict the 60-day mortality related to diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), a pathological hallmark of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The results showed that the total percentage of the area with bronchiectasis or bronchiolectasis on HRCT in early ARDS was an independent positive predictor of 60-day mortality of DAD.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the outcomes of 13 patients with acute superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion who underwent intra-arterial urokinase thrombolysis. The study found that urokinase therapy restored bowel perfusion and preserved bowel in six patients, but failed in the other seven patients. Significant differences were observed in the degree of SMA occlusion, the degree of recanalisation, and the length of stay between the complete and incomplete occlusion groups. In cases of complete SMA occlusion, surgery was warranted, while urokinase thrombolysis may serve as an adjunctive treatment for cases of incomplete SMA occlusion.

The complete sacrifice of the hepatic artery was found to be an effective first-line treatment for pseudoaneurysm or for the rupture of the GDA stump. Conservative treatment, selective embolization of the GDA stump, and incomplete hepatic artery embolization do not provide enduring treatment effects.

Summary: Diabetes and decreased kidney function were found to be associated with an increased likelihood of acute kidney injury following CT contrast material administration. Specifically, patients with an eGFR of less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and patients with diabetes and an eGFR of 30-44 mL/min/1.73 m(2) had higher odds of CI-AKI when undergoing contrast-enhanced CT compared with noncontrast CT. Additionally, patients with diabetes and an eGFR less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m(2) had higher odds of 30-day dialysis.
