Clin Microbiol Infect 2012; 18 (Suppl. 7): 3852 Abstract Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a relatively common syndrome in neonates and children and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. These guidelines provide recommendations for the prevention and treatment of IC in neonates and children. Appropriate agents for the prevention of IC in neonates at high risk include fluconazole (A-I), nystatin (B-II) or lactoferrin +/- Lactobacillus (B-II). The treatment of IC in neonates is complicated by the high likelihood of disseminated disease, including the possibility of infection within the central nervous system. Amphotericin B deoxycholate (B-II), liposomal amphotericin B (B-II), amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) (C-II), fluconazole (B-II), micafungin (B-II) and caspofungin (C-II) can all be potentially used. Recommendations for the prevention of IC in children are largely extrapolated from studies performed in adults with concomitant pharmacokinetic data and models in children. For allogeneic HSCT recipients, fluconazole (A-I), voriconazole (A-I), micafungin (A-I), itraconazole (B-II) and posaconazole (B-II) can all be used. Similar recommendations are made for the prevention of IC in children in other risk groups. With several exceptions, recommendations for the treatment of IC in children are extrapolated from adult studies, with concomitant pharmacokinetic studies. Amphotericin B deoxycholate (C-I), liposomal amphotericin B (A-I), ABLC (B-II), micafungin (A-I), caspofungin (A-I), anidulafungin (B-II), fluconazole (B-I) and voriconazole (B-I) can all be used.

Summary: A prevalence investigation using rapid antigen testing found a more than twofold higher prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to governmental reports in Germany. Out of 419 valid test results, 7 (1.67%) were positive, and three positive individuals were not included in the governmental statistics as they did not have a PCR test.

Remdesivir-related cost-effectiveness and cost and resource use evidence in COVID-19: a systematic review

Molly Murton, Emma Drane, James Jarrett, Oliver A. Cornely, Alex Soriano

Summary: This study conducted a systematic literature review to summarize economic evaluations, and cost and resource use evidence related to remdesivir during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed an increase in the prescription rate of remdesivir and a decrease in bed occupancy with its use. The cost estimates for remdesivir varied widely, and most economic evaluations considered it cost-effective.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors and clinical characteristics of Gram-negative bacteria CIED infections. It found that obesity, a high number of comorbidities, and right subclavian vein implantation site were associated with an increased risk of GNB-CIED infection. Prompt therapeutic intervention guided by FDG PET/CT is suggested for patients with GNB-CIED infection due to the poorer outcome observed in this group.

Knowledge and Attitudes of Turkish Physicians towards Human Monkeypox Disease and Related Vaccination: A Cross-Sectional Study

Taha Koray Sahin, Enes Erul, Melek Seren Aksun, Meliha Cagla Sonmezer, Serhat Unal, Murat Akova

Summary: This study surveyed 283 physicians in Turkey about their knowledge, attitude, concerns, and vaccine acceptance for monkeypox. The results showed that 32.5% of the physicians had a good level of knowledge and 31.4% planned to have the monkeypox vaccine. Female physicians and older individuals were more likely to be knowledgeable about monkeypox. Physicians from internal medicine divisions, those who learned about monkeypox during medical school or residency, and those previously exposed to COVID-19 had a higher knowledge score of monkeypox. Physicians with a good knowledge score were more worried about monkeypox compared to COVID-19.

Assessment of Antifungal Pharmacodynamics

Alex Howard, William Hope

Summary: Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) analysis is crucial for the development of antifungal drugs in clinical use. This review focuses on the progress made in disease model design, outcome selection and translational modelling in antifungal PK-PD studies over the past 30 years. The review also discusses the application of PK-PD parameters in current clinical practice and their relevance to existing and novel antifungal agents.

Complement, but Not Platelets, Plays a Pivotal Role in the Outcome of Mucormycosis In Vivo

Verena Harpf, Guenter Rambach, Nadia Parth, Magdalena Neurauter, Verena Fleischer, Michaela Lackner, Cornelia Lass-Floerl, Reinhard Wuerzner, Cornelia Speth

Summary: Mucormycetes, a heterogeneous group of fungi, induce a life-threatening disease called mucormycosis. Immune deficiencies represent a major risk factor; hence, we wanted to illuminate the role of complement and platelets in the defense against mucormycetes. In vitro experiments showed significant differences in complement deposition between mucormycetes.

Summary: This multicenter retrospective study analyzed the outcome and risk factors for mortality in 326 adult HSCT patients who developed COVID-19. The results showed that age, comorbidities, active hematologic disease, timing from transplant, and severity of the infection were associated with a higher risk of mortality. The overall mortality rate was 21%, with COVID-19 being the main or secondary cause of death in 16% of the patients.

Gastro-intestinal lesions are not relatable to diarrhoea or specific pathogens in post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD) in pigs

Summary: This study investigated the associations between pathological manifestations and pathogens in pigs with and without post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD). The results showed that most of the pigs had gastric lesions, but gastric ulcers were less common in PWD pigs compared to pigs without PWD. Abnormal content in the colon was associated with PWD. No apparent associations were found between lesions and the various pathogens or a combination of these.
