Summary: This study aimed to investigate the recurrence of bacteremia or infective endocarditis (IE) in patients surviving IE and the associated risk factors. Using Danish nationwide registries, the researchers identified the bacterial species involved in IE and found that S. aureus, Enterococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., CoNS, and 'Other' were common pathogens. The recurrence rates of bacteremia or IE with the same bacterial species were 4.8% and 2.6% at 12 months, and 7.7% and 4.0% at 5 years. S. aureus, Enterococcus spp., and CoNS were associated with an increased risk of recurrent infections.

Summary: A 53-year-old man with a history of prosthetic valve replacement and previous S. agalactiae endocarditis presented with fever and shivering. 18F-FDG PET/CT scan showed increased uptake around the prosthetic valve. Blood cultures confirmed S. agalactiae infection, leading to a diagnosis of prosthetic valve endocarditis relapse. With 6 weeks of antibacterial treatment, inflammation improved, but follow-up 18F-FDG PET/CT indicated the possibility of persistent prosthetic valve infection. The patient was discharged with oral antibiotics.

Summary: Patients with multivalvular infective endocarditis (MIE), mainly involving the mitral and aortic valves, have a poorer overall prognosis compared to single-valve IE (SIE). Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in preventing spread to a second valve.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of preoperative ultrasound tumor size in endometrial cancer (EC) through a single center, observational, retrospective, cohort study. The results showed that preoperative ultrasound tumor size estimation is not a prognostic factor in EC women.

Summary: This study describes the characteristics and prognosis of IE patients with and without DM and analyzes the prognostic relevance of DM-related organ damage. The results show that patients with DM have higher in-hospital and one-year mortality rates. DM is independently associated with a poor prognosis, particularly in the case of DM with organ damage.

Summary: This study examined the impact of short-term alcohol consumption on recurrence and mortality in breast cancer patients. The results showed that alcohol drinking around the time of diagnosis and up to 6 months later was associated with lower risk of all-cause mortality in obese women, while nonobese women may face a higher risk of recurrence.

Summary: A new risk model for predicting in-hospital and 6-month mortality in patients with infective endocarditis (IE) has been established. This model, called ASSESS-IE, includes six risk factors and has shown excellent predictive value and calibration in both derivation and validation cohorts. Compared to existing risk scores, ASSESS-IE provides important clinical implications for risk stratification in IE patients.

Summary: This study identified age, drug abuse, EUROSCORE II, and double valve infection as independent predictors of long-term mortality in IE patients. Major non-fatal adverse events were associated with age. New episodes of infection were correlated with S aureus infection, right-sided endocarditis, spondylodiscitis, and intravenous drug abuse.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the clinicopathological features of patients diagnosed with solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) after surgery and their impact on recurrence and survival. The study found a low recurrence rate and high overall survival rate in SPN patients, suggesting a favorable long-term prognosis after surgical resection.

Summary: In right-sided infective endocarditis, vegetation size >2cm, chronic kidney disease, and Pitt bacteraemia score are independent predictors of late mortality, while vegetation >2.5cm, prisoner status, and multivalvular IE involvement increase the risk of recurrence. Patients with small vegetations do well with medical management, but those with large vegetations may require more aggressive treatment and follow-up.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess predictive factors of unfavourable outcome in patients with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). The factors associated with primary treatment failure included hepatic metastases, nosocomial infection, portal thrombosis, and the isolation of Enterococcus spp. Factors associated with the risk of recurrence included ischemic cholangitis and the isolation of Streptococcus spp. Charlson comorbidity index, portal thrombosis, and the presence of multi-drug-resistant organisms were associated with mortality within 3 months following PLA diagnosis. PLA drainage was the only factor associated with a lower mortality. Identification of specific risk factors may help to improve the management of PLA.

Summary: This study describes the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of Bartonella infective endocarditis (IE). Bartonella IE is rare in the GAMES cohort, with Bartonella henselae being the most common causative agent. Cardiac failure is the main presentation, often affecting the aortic valve. Diagnosis relies on serology and PCR, and treatment involves antimicrobial therapy and surgery. The prognosis for patients is generally good.

Summary: Socioeconomic factors influence the clinical profile of patients presenting with infective endocarditis (IE) worldwide. Patients from lower-middle income countries are younger and have a higher risk of complications and mortality, associated with delayed diagnosis and lower use of surgery, compared to patients from high-income and upper-middle income countries.

Summary: The strengths and limitations of registries in infective endocarditis (IE) are discussed in this article. Registries are useful in collecting data on unknown aspects of the disease and providing platforms for further research. However, they face difficulties such as subjective definitions, challenges in case collection, lack of relevant variables, and ethical issues.

Summary: Since the outbreak of COVID-19, pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection have shown an increased incidence of preeclampsia-like syndrome. This study aims to confirm this syndrome and its implications on pregnancy outcomes. The results suggest that more than 50% of pregnant women with severe COVID-19 and diagnostic criteria for preeclampsia may actually have a preeclampsia-like syndrome, which can affect up to 7.5% of women with severe COVID-19. The syndrome has similar perinatal outcomes to normotensive women with severe pneumonia caused by COVID-19. The study highlights the importance of using soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1-to-placental growth factor ratio in future research and clinical decisions.

Summary: The aim of this study was to quantify in vitro biofilm formation by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) on the surfaces of different types of commonly used vascular grafts. The Dacron silver-triclosan and Omniflow II vascular grafts showed the greatest resistance to in vitro methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation compared to other vascular grafts.

Summary: This study compared the epidemiological features and outcomes of infective endocarditis (IE) in different European regions and time periods in the 21st century. The results showed that despite an increase in the complexity of IE cases, prognosis has improved in recent years with a significant decrease in 6-month mortality. The source of infection differed between regions, but the outcomes were not different.
