Human herpesvirus 6 has rarely been identified as a cause of encephalitis in immunocompetent adults. We describe a patient who had severe encephalomyelitis, hypoglycorrhachia, and human herpesvirus 6 identified in his cerebrospinal fluid and serum and who recovered after treatment with foscarnet and ganciclovir. Human herpesvirus 6 should be considered in immunocompetent patients with encephalitis.

Machine learning approach to differentiation of peripheral schwannomas and neurofibromas: A multi-center study

Michael Zhang, Elizabeth Tong, Sam Wong, Forrest Hamrick, Maryam Mohammadzadeh, Vaishnavi Rao, Courtney Pendleton, Brandon W. Smith, Nicholas F. Hug, Sandip Biswal, Jayne Seekins, Sandy Napel, Robert J. Spinner, Mark A. Mahan, Kristen W. Yeom, Thomas J. Wilson

Summary: Machine learning approaches using radiomics features extracted from MRI images, in combination with clinical features, successfully differentiated peripheral schwannomas from neurofibromas. The radiomics-based classifiers outperformed human expert evaluators in terms of accuracy and AUC on the ROC curve.

Age-dependent Intracranial Artery Morphology in Healthy Children

Jennifer L. Quon, Pauline Mouches, Lily H. Kim, Rashad Jabarkheel, Yi Zhang, Gary K. Steinberg, Gerald A. Grant, Michael S. B. Edwards, Kristen W. Yeom, Nils D. Forkert

Summary: This study quantitatively assessed normal, age-related changes in artery morphology in children using MRA data. The results showed that the radii of major arteries in different vascular territories of the brain remained constant throughout childhood and adolescence. This automated evaluation of intracranial vessel morphology can provide a framework for quantitative assessment in pediatric neurovascular diseases.

Summary: Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) and other H3K27M-mutated diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs) are lethal pediatric tumors of the central nervous system. GD2-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells show promising preclinical efficacy. Four patients with H3K27M-mutated DIPG or spinal cord DMG were treated with GD2-CAR T cells and showed clinical and radiographic improvement.

Central Nervous System Xanthoma Disseminatum: Response to 2CdA in an Adolescent

Patrick DeMoss, Nancy Tang, Kristen Yeom, Audris Chiang, Ann L. Marqueling, Michael R. Jeng

Summary: Xanthoma disseminatum is a rare skin disease characterized by red-brown plaque-like lesions. It can also affect mucosal linings, the central nervous system, and endocrine system. We report a case of a 12-year-old patient with gastrointestinal issues and central nervous system involvement, who showed significant improvement after treatment.

Intracranial Hemorrhage in Term and Late-Preterm Neonates: An Institutional Perspective

A. G. Sandoval Karamian, Q. -Z. Yang, L. T. Tam, V. L. Rao, E. Tong, K. W. Yeom

Summary: The distribution of intracranial hemorrhage in term and late-preterm neonates is explored in this study. The most common types of hemorrhage are intraventricular and subdural. Additionally, a high prevalence of venous congestion or thromboses is reported in neonatal intracranial hemorrhage.

Ferumoxytol-Enhanced MRI in Children and Young Adults: State of the Art

Lisa C. Adams, Praveen Jayapal, Shakthi K. Ramasamy, Wipawee Morakote, Kristen Yeom, Lucia Baratto, Heike E. Daldrup-Link

Summary: Ferumoxytol is an approved ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticle that has been increasingly used as an MRI contrast agent, particularly in pediatric patients. Unlike gadolinium-based contrast agents, it is biodegradable and has no potential risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. It has unique MRI properties, including long-lasting vascular retention, making it suitable for various applications, such as vascular, cardiac, and cancer imaging. It is also being researched for its potential use in cellular and molecular imaging and as a potential cancer therapeutic agent.

Summary: This study quantitatively compared arterial differences between pediatric patients with MMD/MMS and normal controls. The results showed significantly smaller radii of ICA, MCA-M1, MCA-M2, and ACA in the MMD/MMS group. This study provides a promising quantitative surveillance method for pediatric MMD/MMS management.

Summary: The South China Sea is a complex and dynamic marginal sea with great economic importance. It experiences strong seasonal forcing from the monsoon cycle, which affects river runoff and circulation. A study found a wide distribution of host diatoms and Diatom-Diazotroph Associations (DDAs) in different habitats of the South China Sea, with the lowest infection rates and intensities in waters affected by coastal upwelling.

Measuring Quantitative Cerebral Blood Flow in Healthy Children: A Systematic Review of Neuroimaging Techniques

Moss Y. Y. Zhao, Elizabeth Tong, Rui Duarte Armindo, Amanda Woodward, Kristen W. Yeom, Michael E. Moseley, Greg Zaharchuk

Summary: Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is an important parameter to assess brain health. Quantitative measurement of CBF can be obtained using medical imaging techniques. However, there is a lack of CBF data in healthy children due to difficulties in pediatric neuroimaging. Understanding the factors affecting pediatric CBF and its normal range is crucial for optimal CBF measurement in pediatric neuroradiology.
