Patients with Staphylococcus aureus colonization of an intravascular catheter but without demonstrated bacteremia within 24 h after intravascular catheter removal had a 24% (12 of 49 patients) chance of subsequent S. aureus bacteremia if they did not receive immediate antistaphylococcal antibiotics. Treatment within 24 h after intravascular catheter removal led to a 83% reduction in the incidence of subsequent bacteremia.

Summary: The 69th World Health Assembly endorsed the goal to eliminate hepatitis infection as a public health threat by 2030, followed by global targets for the care and management of hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections. However, tracking countries' progress towards these elimination goals revealed limitations of existing targets and recommended changes to simplify and adjust the targets for better impact and recognition of countries' efforts.

N. Finkenflugel, Bart J. A. Rijnders, David A. M. C. van de Vijver, Charles A. B. Boucher, Annelies Verbon, Casper Rokx

Summary: During the COVID lockdown, there was a significant decrease in the number of HIV indicator conditions in hospitals compared to other non-COVID diseases, along with reduced rates of HIV testing and positive tests. After lockdown cessation, there was an increase in late presentation of HIV cases, indicating a significant impact on the HIV care continuum.

Summary: Resistance associated substitutions (RAS) frequently occur after DAA failures and follow a specific genotype and drug related pattern. The interpretation of the influence of RAS on retreatment is challenging due to various patterns, patients' characteristics, and previous treatment history. Ongoing resistance surveillance is essential to track the presence of RAS for achieving HCV elimination goals.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the burden of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 2020 and forecast the burden by 2030. Using literature review, Delphi process, and mathematical modelling, it estimated the global prevalence of viraemic HCV infection to be 0.7% in 2020, corresponding to 56.8 million infections. The findings suggest that the current efforts are not on track to achieve the global elimination targets by 2030.

Danny Noack, Maja Travar, Visnja Mrdjen, Jolanda J. C. Voermans, David van de Vijver, Richard Molenkamp, Marion P. G. Koopmans, Marco Goeijenbier, Barry Rockx

Summary: This study investigated the associations between various immunological, hemostatic, and kidney injury markers and the severity of Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) infection. The results showed that IL-18 was increased and RANTES was decreased in patients with severe thrombocytopenia. Additionally, recently identified AKI biomarkers were upregulated in patients with severe PUUV infection, indicating pathology in glomeruli and proximal tubuli. E-selectin was higher and IP-10 was lower in patients with more severe kidney dysfunction. These findings suggest the involvement of immune responses, endothelial cell activation, and specific cytokines in the pathogenesis of PUUV-induced renal injury.

Summary: This study reports a case of incomplete HIV-1 suppression and emergence of integrase resistance mutations in a patient on a dolutegravir-based regimen. Next-generation sequencing revealed the dynamics of resistance mutations and cumulative treatment adherence. Characteristics and short- and long-term direct medical costs among adults with timely and delayed presentation for HIV care in the Netherlands

Stephanie Popping, Lisbeth E. Versteegh, Brooke Nichols, David A. M. C. van de Vijver, Ard van Sighem, Peter Reiss, Suzanne Geerlings, Charles A. B. Boucher, Annelies Verbon

Summary: In Europe, many people living with HIV (PLWH) are diagnosed and start treatment late, leading to worse health outcomes. This study analyzed data from the ATHENA cohort in the Netherlands to assess the costs of HIV-care based on time of presentation and identify factors contributing to higher costs in the first and fifth year of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. The study found that very late presentation was associated with substantial costs, particularly non-ART medication costs, which were nearly seven times higher compared to timely presentation.
