Summary: In this issue of International Journal of Eating Disorders, Walsh et al. review the research comparing atypical anorexia nervosa (atypical AN) and AN. Most differences observed were related to weight, while psychopathology and complications were similar. The findings suggest that atypical AN and AN are not fundamentally different, emphasizing the need for further research. The high prevalence of atypical AN in clinical settings highlights the importance of continuing research.

Summary: This study analyzed the sensitivity to sweet, salty, and umami tastes in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa (AN) using three measurement methods and evaluated the hedonic perception of taste sensations. The results showed that females with AN had reduced sensitivity to salty taste and increased sensitivity to umami taste. They also assessed the sodium chloride and monosodium glutamate tastes less negatively than healthy controls. The findings suggest that taste sensitivity alterations in AN patients do not necessarily lead to a decreased hedonic assessment of taste experiences.

Summary: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a growth factor with trophic effects on neurons, widely distributed in the central nervous system (CNS) and highly expressed in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. This review focuses on the use of BDNF in the assessment, monitoring, and pharmacotherapy of developmental disorders, primarily epilepsy, depression, anorexia, obesity, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease. However, the limitations of using a molecule with such widespread distribution and inconsistent determination methods are also highlighted.

Summary: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is a chronic glomerular disease in children characterized by severe proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, and/or edema and hyperlipidemia. Interleukin-15 (IL-15), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, may play a role in the pathogenesis of INS. Our study found that the concentration of IL-15 was significantly elevated in both serum and urine of patients with INS compared to healthy controls, suggesting IL-15 may serve as a potential marker for early diagnosis of the disease.

Summary: In recent years, scientists have become interested in PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) due to their potential implications in cancer. Research has shown their expression can be linked to malignant diseases, particularly in tumor tissues. However, obtaining these samples can be invasive, so researchers have explored using liquid biopsy as an alternative. Various piRNAs have been found to be expressed in bodily fluids and their expression differs significantly between cancer patients and healthy individuals. Hence, this review aims to assess the use of liquid biopsy with piRNAs as biomarkers for cancer diagnosis.
