Objective To determine the frequency distribution of LMNA 1908C>T SNP and its association with generalized obesity, abdominal obesity and coexistent metabolic disorders in nondiabetic Asian Indians living in a metropolitan city of north India. Design A cross-sectional population-based study of LMNA 1908C>T polymorphism with obesity and insulin resistance as outcome. Patients Five hundred and fifty-one Asian Indians, with 240 obese and 289 nonobese subjects. Measurements Allelic and genotypic frequency of LMNA 1908C>T were determined by PCR-RFLP. Association of LMNA alleles and genotypes was analysed with various measures of obesity [BMI >= 25 kg/m(2), percentage body fat (by DEXA); subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat at L2-3 level by single slice MRI in a sub-sample and surrogate marker of insulin resistance (fasting serum insulin levels >10 mu U/ml in men and >11 mu U/ml in women). Results Forty-six per cent of the subjects had generalized obesity while 54% had abdominal obesity. Frequency of C and T alleles was 0.71 and 0.29, respectively. Higher frequency of variant allele (T) was observed in obese than nonobese individuals (P = 0.001). On multivariate analysis adjusting for age, gender and serum insulin levels, subjects with LMNA1908T/T genotype were at 5.6 times higher risk [OR (95% CI): 5.6 (2.5-12.2), P = 0.001], while individuals with genotypes with at least one T allele, i.e. 1908C/T and T/T genotypes, were at 2.7 times higher odds to develop generalized obesity [OR (95% CI): 2.7 (1.8-4.1), P = 0.001]. Conclusion LMNA 1908T/T and C/T genotypes emerged as independent genetic risk factors for generalized obesity in Asian north Indians.

BLS courses for refugees are feasible and induce commitment towards lay rescuer resuscitation

Sebastian Schnaubelt, Benedikt Schnaubelt, Arnold Pilz, Julia Oppenauer, Erdem Yildiz, Christoph Schriefl, Florian Ettl, Mario Krammel, Rakesh Garg, Alexander Niessner, Robert Greif, Hans Domanovits, Patrick Sulzgruber

Summary: This study provided BLS courses for refugees in Austria, finding that awareness towards CPR and AED, as well as willingness to perform CPR, increased significantly after the courses. Particularly, individuals with past traumatizing experiences, higher education, or those under 18 years old showed a more pronounced impact. Therefore, promoting CPR education among refugees can improve survival rates, as well as foster resilience and integration.

The COVID-19 pandemic: a new epoch and fresh challenges for cancer patients and caregivers-a descriptive cross-sectional study

Seema Mishra, Raghav Gupta, Sushma Bhatnagar, Rakesh Garg, Sachidanand Jee Bharati, Vinod Kumar, Nishkarsh Gupta

Summary: This study aims to observe the challenges faced by cancer patients and their caregivers and formulate strategies to overcome these challenges. The major challenges identified were physical symptoms, postponed treatment, fear of COVID-19 infection, lack of accommodation, and lack of spiritual clarity and hope. It is crucial for healthcare setups to address these challenges and provide holistic care to cancer patients, not only during the COVID-19 pandemic but also in future pandemics.

Summary: The study found that standardized educational intervention significantly improved analgesic knowledge and compliance among advanced cancer patients attending palliative care clinic. It also reduced barriers to compliance. The correlation between knowledge and compliance scores was significant, indicating the effectiveness of the intervention.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the histologic features in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) and identify independent histologic predictors of 28-day mortality in these patients. The results showed that dense lobular necroinflammatory activity is an independent histologic predictor of short-term mortality in ACLF patients.

Circulatory GSK-3β: Blood-Based Biomarker and Therapeutic Target for Alzheimer's Disease

Shiwani Kumari, Ambica Singh, Abhinay Kumar Singh, Yudhishthir Yadav, Swati Bajpai, Pramod Kumar, Ashish Datt Upadhyay, Shashank Shekhar, Sadanand Dwivedi, A. B. Dey, Sharmistha Dey

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of GSK-3 beta and p53 as blood-based biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results suggest that the expression levels of GSK-3 beta, p53, and their phosphorylated states are significantly elevated in AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients, and these proteins can differentiate AD and MCI from geriatric-control (GC) subjects. Additionally, the antioxidant Emblica Officinalis (EO) can downregulate the expression levels of GSK-3 beta and p53 proteins in neurotoxic cells induced by amyloid-beta.

Summary: The study investigated the clinical and laboratory characteristics, as well as outcomes, of children with MIS-C related to COVID-19 in a resource-limited setting. Findings showed that fever, gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms were common in these children, with a higher mortality rate observed in those with preexisting chronic conditions. Raised ferritin levels may serve as a poor prognostic marker, while outcomes for coronary artery involvement were reassuring during follow-up.
