Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infects mature dendritic cells (mDCs) derived from porcine monocytes and matured with lipopolysaccharide. The infection of mDCs induced apoptosis, reduced the expression of CD80/86 and major histocompatibility complex class II molecules, and increased the expression of interleukin-10, thus suggesting that such mDC modulation results in the impairment of T-cell activation.

Raman spectroscopy and silver nanoparticles for efficient detection of membrane proteins in living cells

Noralvis Fleitas-Salazar, Seidy Pedroso-Santana, Erika Silva-Campa, Aracely Angulo-Molina, Jorge R. Toledo, Raul Riera, Martin Pedroza-Montero

Summary: This study addresses the limitations of SERS substrates in membrane molecule studies using Raman spectroscopy, successfully detecting membrane-associated hemoglobin in human erythrocytes. The results show that oxyRBCs incubated with AgNPs exhibit enhanced deoxyHb signals, supporting the detection of Hb(m) through deoxyHb markers.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers are at a high risk of being infected with SARS-CoV-2, especially those in ophthalmology departments. A study conducted in Mexico City found that 32% of HCWs at an Ophthalmological Reference Centre tested RT-PCR positive, with 20% presenting IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Despite the high infection rate, most HCWs showed mild symptoms, and a significant portion of RT-PCR positive participants did not show IgG antibodies.

Swine Dendritic Cell Response to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus: An Update

Jesus Hernandez, Yanli Li, Enric Mateu

Summary: Dendritic cells in pigs consist of three types, with different pathogens having the ability to infect these cells, especially Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV). Research has shown that some dendritic cells are refractory to PRRSV infection, while others may have different responses depending on the type of PRRSV involved.

Immunomodulation by Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bb12: Integrative Analysis of miRNA Expression and TLR2 Pathway-Related Target Proteins in Swine Monocytes

Marina Arenas-Padilla, Anna Gonzalez-Rascon, Adrian Hernandez-Mendoza, Ana Maria Calderon de la Barca, Jesus Hernandez, Veronica Mata-Haro

Summary: The study analyzed the miRNA expression profile in swine monocytes exposed to Bb12 using an anti-TLR2 blocking strategy and investigated Bb12's involvement in the regulation of the TLR2 pathway. The results showed that 40 miRNAs were influenced by the treatments, with 15 differentially expressed miRNAs identified with validated interactions with proteins related to the TLR2 pathway.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 virus, first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019, has led to the rapid development of diagnostic tools, therapies, and vaccines to control COVID-19. ELISA antibody detection has been widely used to recognize infection and vaccine response. Research showed that IgG antibodies can be detected up to 42 weeks after natural infection, and that one dose of CanSinoBio vaccine induces a lower IgG antibody response compared to the complete Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine regimen.

Summary: The research demonstrated the ability of rAb ZH9F7 to target and trigger internalization in dendritic cells, promoting their migration in vivo. The antigenized rAb ZH9F7-Cap induced a higher frequency of IFN-gamma-secreting CD4(+)CD8(+) T lymphocytes and antibodies against the Cap protein.

Summary: This study analyzes the combination of two SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens and finds that immunization with a combination of S1 or RBD and the N protein can elicit a stronger immune response. The sera from immunized mice can recognize different variants of SARS-CoV-2. This study identifies potential antigens for the second generation of COVID-19 vaccines.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of neutralizing antibodies against the ancestral strain and the Omicron BA.1 subvariant in dogs and cats in Mexico. The results showed that 14.2% of cats and 1.5% of dogs presented nAbs against the ancestral strain of SARS-CoV-2, while a lower proportion had nAbs against Omicron BA.1.

Association Between Interleukin 6 and C-Reactive Protein Serum Levels and Body Composition Compartments and Components in Breast Cancer Survivors

Maria Josse Navarro-Ibarra, Maria del Socorro Saucedo-Tamayo, Heliodoro Aleman-Mateo, Hector Parra-Sanchez, Paola Othon-Ontiveros, Jesus Hernandez, Graciela Caire-Juvera

Summary: This study found that body fat percentage and fat mass index were positively associated with C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in female breast cancer survivors, while appendicular skeletal lean mass index (ASMI) decreased as CRP levels increased. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) was positively associated with fat mass index. Interventions to improve body composition in breast cancer survivors should consider the role of inflammatory markers to avoid sarcopenic obesity and the risk of recurrence.
