Presumed Microbial Keratitis Cases Resulting in Evisceration and Enucleation in Sydney, Australia

Maria Cabrera-Aguas, Pauline Khoo, Stephanie L. Watson

Summary: This study reviewed cases of presumed microbial keratitis resulting in evisceration/enucleation in Sydney, Australia from 2012 to 2016. The results showed that elderly patients with a history of topical corticosteroid use were at higher risk, and educating them on prompt hospital presentation and treatment could decrease the probability of losing the eye.

Efficacy and Safety of Standard Corneal Cross-Linking Procedures Performed With Short Versus Standard Riboflavin Induction: A Save Sight Keratoconus Registry Study

Blanca Benito-Pascual, Himal Kandel, Marco Abbondanza, Richard Mills, Laurence Sullivan, Stephanie L. Watson

Summary: The study compared the effectiveness and safety of short and standard riboflavin induction times in cross-linking for keratoconus. The results showed that both short and standard induction times achieved similar improvements in K2 and vision after one year. However, the short induction group had greater improvements in Kmax and TCT, but also higher rates of haze.

Five-year corneal cross-linking outcomes: A Save Sight Keratoconus Registry Study

Alex C. Ferdi, Himal Kandel, Vuong Nguyen, Jeremy Tan, Francisco Arnalich-Montiel, Marco Abbondanza, Stephanie L. Watson

Summary: The long-term outcomes of epithelium-off cross-linking (CXL) in keratoconus patients were determined in this study. Most patients showed stable keratoconus up to 5 years after the CXL treatment, but a small proportion experienced reduced vision.

Cross-Linking Improves the Quality of Life of People With Keratoconus: A Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Study From the Save Sight Keratoconus Registry

Himal Kandel, Jern Yee Chen, Srujana Sahebjada, Elaine W. Chong, Steven Wiffen, Stephanie L. Watson

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes after corneal cross-linking for keratoconus. The results showed that corneal cross-linking was associated with improved activity limitation, symptoms, and emotional status in keratoconus patients.

Badminton-related eye injuries: a systematic review

Annette K. Hoskin, Stephanie Watson, Tengku A. Kamalden

Summary: This study reviewed the literature to report the nature of badminton-related eye injuries. The results showed that from 1974 to 2020, 19 studies from 12 countries reported 378 monocular badminton-related eye injuries from 378 patients, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.5:1. A closed globe injury was the most common type of injury, with the shuttlecock being responsible for 85% of the injuries. Doubles play, the shuttlecock, and a lack of eye protection were associated with eye injuries.

The Management of Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia (OSSN)

Clarice H. Y. Yeoh, Jerome J. R. Lee, Blanche X. H. Lim, Gangadhara Sundar, Jodhbir S. Mehta, Anita S. Y. Chan, Dawn K. A. Lim, Stephanie L. Watson, Santosh G. Honavar, Ray Manotosh, Chris H. L. Lim

Summary: The rise of primary topical monotherapy with chemotherapeutic drugs and immunomodulatory agents suggests a potential shift away from surgery as the standard of care in managing ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). Currently, there is no consensus or guidelines on the best treatment approach for OSSN. This paper evaluates available treatments and proposes an algorithm to guide ophthalmologists in selecting the most appropriate treatment regime.

Mental Health Impact of Keratoconus: A Systematic Review

Emily Durakovic, Himal Kandel, Stephanie L. L. Watson

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of keratoconus on the mental health and emotional well-being of affected patients. A literature search was conducted, and 31 articles met the inclusion criteria. Most studies reported keratoconus to have a negative effect on mental health or emotional well-being, and worsening mental health scores were correlated with various factors. Over time, mental health outcomes improved, suggesting disease stabilization and patient acceptance. Further research is needed to determine the potential benefits of routine mental health screening for patients with keratoconus.

Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) local treatment guideline audit 2018-2019

Andrew Nguyen, Maria Cabrera-Aguas, Stephanie L. Watson

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the adherence of clinicians at Sydney Eye Hospital to the evidence-based guidelines for treating herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) in order to evaluate the sustainability of guideline implementation. A retrospective review found that clinicians showed a high level of adherence to the treatment guidelines, but regular educational activities are still needed to maintain knowledge levels.

Efficacy and safety of AZR-MD-001 selenium sulfide ophthalmic ointment in adults with meibomian gland dysfunction: A vehicle-controlled, randomized clinical trial

Stephanie L. Watson, Lyndon W. Jones, Fiona Stapleton, Mark Hinds, Alison Ng, Jacqueline Tan, Yair Alster, Charles Bosworth, Omer Rafaeli, CELESTIAL STUDY Grp

Summary: This study investigated the use of AZR-MD-001 0.5% as a potential treatment for Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The treatment resulted in significant improvements in both the number of open glands and patient-reported ocular surface symptoms. The study focused on the changes in these outcomes before and after treatment in MGD patients.

Genetic predisposition to ocular surface disorders and opportunities for gene-based therapies

Danial Roshandel, Farbod Semnani, Amirmasoud Rayati Damavandi, Ali Masoudi, Alireza Baradaran-Rafii, Stephanie L. Watson, William H. Morgan, Samuel McLenachan

Summary: The ocular surface, consisting of the corneal and conjunctival epithelium, plays a crucial role in maintaining ocular integrity and function. Gene defects can lead to ocular surface disorders, either as congenital conditions or through the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Advanced gene-based technologies have shown promise in disease modeling and gene therapy for monogenic ocular surface disorders. Understanding the genetic factors involved in both monogenic and multifactorial ocular surface disorders could pave the way for personalized disease models and treatment strategies.

Rosacea Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Posterior Blepharitis May Be a Marker for Earlier Associated Dyslipidaemia and Inflammation Detection and Treatment with Statins

Kenneth G. Ooi, Stephanie L. Watson

Summary: Posterior blepharitis and dry eye are common disorders associated with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Ocular rosacea can manifest as MGD and dyslipidaemia. Treating ocular rosacea-associated dyslipidaemia and systemic inflammation may improve cardiovascular health and reduce tear film instability.
