Summary: The capillary endothelium, including that of the glomeruli, have a luminal cell surface layer (ESL) composed of various components, crucial for maintaining a normal filtration barrier and preventing proteinuria. Experiment results showed that elution with high salt solution could reduce ESL thickness, cause albuminuria and decrease GFR. Dysregulation of PGs in DKD patients suggests their importance in ESL function and prevention of proteinuria.

Summary: Small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRPs) serve a crucial role in maintaining retinal homeostasis by participating in the organization of extracellular matrix, regulation of cell growth, and cell-matrix interactions in several upstream signaling pathways.

Summary: This study investigated the role of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps (NP). The results showed that MMP2 and MMP9 were expressed at higher levels in granulocytes and mast cells compared to monocytes. Additionally, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) was also expressed at higher levels in mast cells compared to granulocytes and monocytes. Excessive MMP2 and MMP9 in granulocytes and mast cells contribute to the degradation of the extracellular matrix, allowing inflammatory cells to pass through and causing polypoid degeneration.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the genetic polymorphism of MMP 9 (rs17576) and TIMP 1 (rs48498) and serum levels in CRSwNP patients, as well as the impact of MMP 9 and TIMP 1 genotypes on vitamin D levels in CRSwNP with and without AERD. The results showed that serum levels of MMP 9 were higher in the AG genotype and in patients carrying the A(+) allele in CRSwNP with AERD. Additionally, serum levels of vitamin D were significantly lower in the TIMP 1 CT genotype in all CRSwNP patients.

Summary: The study found significantly reduced ABR wave I amplitude and wave I/wave V ratio in patients with acute idiopathic tinnitus compared to those without tinnitus. Age and pure-tone threshold were correlated with reduced wave I amplitude and wave I/wave V ratio. Both low-dose oral steroids and ginkgo biloba provided early subjective relief of tinnitus, with no significant difference in outcomes between the two groups.

Summary: This study aimed to predict temporal bone fracture-associated hearing loss by classifying the fractures according to involvement of the cochlea, vestibule, and semicircular canals. The study found that cases involving only the semicircular canals had better hearing thresholds compared to cases involving the cochlea or vestibule, even in otic capsule-violating fractures.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effect of eyelid position and pupil size on the results of video head impulse tests (video-HITs). The results showed that after pupillary dilatation, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain and corrective saccade amplitudes decreased significantly, while the frequency of eyelid flicks did not change. The study highlights the importance of considering eyelid position and pupil size when interpreting video-HIT results, especially for the vertical canals.

Summary: This study found the presence of antiganglioside antibodies in patients with AUPV and identified differences in clinical characteristics and neurotologic findings compared to patients without antibodies. Most patients showed negative conversion of antibodies and recovered vestibular function during treatment.

Summary: In patients with mild-to-moderate PD, vestibular function assessed by video head-impulse tests appears relatively preserved and has minimal impact on the risk of falls. Risk of postural instability is associated with the severity of clinical symptoms in PD.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of glycemic control on hearing outcomes in type 2 diabetes patients with ISSHL. The results showed that glycemic control did not significantly affect hearing recovery rates, but factors such as treatment duration, presence of vertigo, and initial hearing level had negative impacts on hearing recovery.
