Using allele scores to identify confounding by reverse causation: studies of alcohol consumption as an exemplar

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization and reverse MR to investigate the confounding effect of reverse causality in the association between alcohol consumption and educational attainment, physical and mental health. The findings suggest that observed beneficial effects of alcohol consumption may be attributed to confounding by reverse causation.

Association of entry into hospice or palliative care consultation during acute care hospitalization with subsequent antibiotic utilization

Summary: This study aimed to estimate antibiotic use during the last 6 months of life for hospitalized patients under hospice or palliative care and identify potential targets for antibiotic stewardship. The data showed that within 14 days of placement or consultation, 41% of hospice patients and 48% of palliative care patients received at least one antibiotic.

Third generation cephalosporin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae thriving in patients and in wastewater: what do they have in common?

Summary: This study compared the phenotypic, genotypic, and genomic characteristics of clinical and wastewater isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and found that they cannot be distinguished based on these features. Whole genome sequence analysis revealed that antibiotic and metal resistance or virulence genes were associated with mobile genetic elements, and these features varied among isolates according to their genetic lineage rather than their origin. Therefore, this study suggests that clinically relevant features of K. pneumoniae can be preserved in wastewater, even after treatment, highlighting the high capacity of K. pneumoniae for spreading through wastewater and increasing the risks of transmission back to humans.

Community coherence and acculturation strategies among refugee adolescents: How do they explain mental-health symptoms?

Summary: This study aimed to explore sense of community coherence and acculturation strategies on mental health among adolescent Syrian refugees in Greece. Results showed that female adolescents reported stronger sense of community coherence while male adolescents reported more externalizing problems. Exposure to war events, appraisal of danger, sense of community coherence, and acculturation strategies all significantly explained various mental-health problems.

Herbicide resistance management strategies: how do they compare with those for insecticides, fungicides and antibiotics?

Recommended herbicide resistance management strategies have evolved over the past 50 years, with mixtures of pesticides and antibiotics generally more effective than rotations.

Internalized and Perceived Stigma and Depression in Pulmonary Tuberculosis: Do They Explain the Relationship Between Drug Sensitivity Status and Adherence?

Summary: This study found an important relationship between different psychosocial factors that may affect treatment adherence in tuberculosis patients. Patients with higher stigma are more likely to develop depression, which negatively impacts adherence. Patients on the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis regimen experience higher levels of stigma. There is an urgent need to integrate mental health services with tuberculosis control programs.

Post Orgasmic Illness Syndrome (POIS) and Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS): Do They Have Anything in Common?

Summary: Post orgasmic illness syndrome is a rare condition with unknown pathomechanism and uncertain treatment, characterized by symptoms lasting 2-7 days post ejaculation. Proposed primary injury includes acute compression proprioceptive axonopathy in the muscle spindle and mitochondrial impairment. Similarities to delayed onset muscle soreness exist, but differences arise from spermidine depletion-induced physiological responses. Longitudinally, cognitive and memory consequences are noted due to learning and memory-related primary injury.

Metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in the sewage of Mexico City: where do they come from?

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli isolates were discovered in municipal wastewater bacteria from Mexico City. These isolates carried multiple resistance genes and plasmids, indicating a potential unknown source of carbapenem-resistant bacteria being discharged into the wastewater. Controlling the spread of these strains is crucial to prevent the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance among other environmental and clinical microorganisms.

Summary: This study examined the ethno-racial differences in daily functioning among individuals with serious mental illnesses, specifically focusing on non-Latinx White, non-Latinx Black, and Latinx participants. The findings indicate that Black participants engaged more in solitary or passive leisure activities compared to White and Latinx participants, and reported less vocational activity and home-based active leisure. While some of these differences were explained by socioeconomic status and symptom severity, further research is needed to explore sociocultural and racism-related factors. Clinical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Empiric antibiotic and in-vitro susceptibility of urosepsis pathogens: do they match? The outcome of a study from south India

Bank stock valuation theories: do they explain prices based on theories?

School Scientific Models in high school students. How do they explain adaptive evolution?

Summary: We collected evidence of students' scientific models on the model of evolution by natural selection through two activities. The initial and final scientific models were characterized based on the conceptions or ideas students used to explain problems of adaptive evolution. Three virtual research instruments were used: an initial questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, and a written evaluation. The constant comparative method was used to analyze students' explanations. The initial scientific models were characterized by ideas of individual change, environmental induction, and teleological (finalist) character, while the final models incorporated ideas of prior variability and variant-effectiveness relationship consistent with the model of evolution by natural selection.

Maternal plasma choline and betaine in late pregnancy and child growth up to age 8 years in the KOALA Birth Cohort Study

Summary: Adequate choline and betaine levels during pregnancy are essential for fetal growth and development. Maternal plasma choline and betaine levels in the third trimester were found to be positively associated with childhood anthropometric measures, with some associations persisting up to 8 years of age, particularly in boys. Further studies are needed to explore the validity of maternal plasma choline and betaine concentrations as markers of maternal intake and fetal transfer.

Organic food use, meat intake, and prevalence of gestational diabetes: KOALA birth cohort study

Summary: Based on a cross-sectional analysis, consuming organic food and reducing meat intake during pregnancy does not seem to be significantly associated with a lower prevalence of gestational diabetes. Participants with gestational diabetes tended to consume more meat products and fewer vegetarian products.

Summary: This study optimized a solid-phase extraction procedure to extract 3-fucosyllactose and other HMOs from human milk samples for absolute quantitation. The approach was applied on a pilot sample set of 20 human milk samples and paired infant feces, with analysis conducted using a variety of methods including high-performance anion-exchange chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Infants were classified into three clusters based on different HMO consumption patterns, and the structure of HMOs was found to impact their degradation by infant microbiota.

Influence of Alternative Lifestyles on Antibiotic Use during Pregnancy, Lactation and in Children

Summary: This study compares parent reported physician diagnosed asthma with general practitioner recorded childhood asthma and finds only moderate agreement between the two. The labeling of early transient wheeze as asthma diagnosis may influence the agreement. Therefore, combining parent reported physician diagnosed asthma with additional questions is important for obtaining reliable information in epidemiological research.

Summary: The infant gut microbiota is influenced by antibiotic exposures and prebiotic oligosaccharides found in breast milk. This study analyzed the stool microbiota of 1023 one-month-old infants and found that breastfeeding and antibiotic exposure both decrease gut microbial diversity, but have different effects on microbiota composition. Other factors such as C-section, homebirth, siblings, and exposure to animals also impact microbiota composition. Understanding these factors can help protect and promote a healthy infant gut microbiota.

Association between COVID-19 Primary Vaccination and Severe Disease Caused by SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant among Hospitalized Patients: A Belgian Retrospective Cohort Study

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of vaccines against severe COVID-19 outcomes in hospitalized patients. The results show that a primary COVID-19 vaccination schedule is associated with lower odds of progressing to severe disease and in-hospital death. mRNA vaccines and the AZ vaccine seemed to provide similar protection among patients older than 75 years, while one dose of the J&J vaccine showed lower efficacy in this age group. In conclusion, a primary vaccination schedule can protect hospitalized patients from worsening COVID-19 outcomes.

Association of picky eating around age 4 with dietary intake and weight status in early adulthood: A 14-year follow-up based on the KOALA birth cohort study

Summary: This study examined the association between picky eating in childhood and dietary patterns and weight status in young adulthood. The results showed that picky eating in childhood is associated with lower intake frequencies of healthy foods among young adults. Therefore, it is recommended to pay sufficient attention to picky eating in young children.
