p-Sulfonatothiacalix[6]arene-impregnated resins for the sorption of platinum group metals and effective separation of palladium from automotive catalyst residue

p-Sulfonatothiacalix[6]arene was impregnated onto commercial polymeric resins. The platinum group metals sorption experiments were carried and maximum PGM sorption was observed at pH 4 in 180 min. The 1-loaded IRA-400, IRA-411, and XAD-7 showed Pd SCs of 279, 265, and 135 mg/g, respectively. The PGM SCs of 1-loaded IRA-400, IRA-411 are found to be Pd > Pt > Rh. All the impregnated resins followed Freundlich isotherm and Pd sorption was exothermic. The kinetic studies demonstrate that Pd sorption follows pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models. 1-Loaded XAD-7 selectively adsorbs of Pd ions from an automotive catalyst residue leached solution. Summary: A high-quality organic nonlinear single crystal of 2,3-dimethyl-N-[(E)-2,4,5-trimethoxy benzylidene] aniline (DTA) was successfully synthesized and grown using the slow evaporation technique. The crystal structure was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and various optical properties were analyzed. The DTA crystal exhibited potential for use in nonlinear optical device applications.
