From the oligotrophic culture of a soft coral-associated actinomycetes strain, Streptomyces sp. OUCMDZ-1703, we isolated and identified two new chlorinated polyketides that we named strepchloritides A and B (1 and 2), three thiazole derivatives known as watasemycin A (3), pulicatin G (4) and aerugine (5), along with pyrrole-2-carboxamide, furan-2-carboxamide and 1-(3,5-dihydroxyphenyl)ethanone. The new structures of 1 and 2 were determined by spectroscopic studies such as 1D- and 2D-NMR and MS analyses, while the known compounds were identified by comparison of the NMR data with those in literatures. The results showed that actinomycete strain OUCMDZ-1703 could use the relative high ratio of chlorine in the oligotrophic medium to synthesize chlorinated natural products. New compounds 1 and 2 displayed cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 cells with IC50 values of 9.9 and 20.2 mu mol.L-1, respectively. Thiazole derivatives 3 and 5 were first found to be active against three clinical strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA082, MRSA111 and MRSA234) with the same MIC/MBC values of 7.81/7.81 mu g.mL-1.

Occurrence and spatial distribution of microplastics, and their correlation with petroleum in coastal waters of Hainan Island, China*

Liu Gao, Zezheng Wang, Xianzhi Peng, Yuanyuan Su, Pengcheng Fu, Chengjun Ge, Jinjin Zhao, Liang Yang, Huamei Yu, Licheng Peng

Summary: This study systematically investigated the distribution, abundance, morphology, and composition of microplastics (MPs) in surface seawater and sediment of Hainan Island. The results showed that the abundance of MPs in seawater was similar to other areas of the South China Sea, while the abundance in sediment was higher. The predominant shape of MPs was linear and fragmented, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) being the dominant polymer, possibly originating from laundry wastewater. The petroleum concentration was positively correlated with MPs pollution in seawater.

Targeted Isolation of Two New Anti-inflammatory and UV-A Protective Dipyrroloquinones from the Sponge-associated Fungus Aspergillus tamarii MCCF102

Lekshmi Niveditha, Peng Fu, Tiago F. Leao, Te Li, Tingting Wang, Remington X. Poulin, Lorena R. Gaspar, C. Benjamin Naman, Sajeevan Thavarool Puthiyedathu

Summary: Two new dipyrrolobenzoquinones, terreusinone B and C, were discovered from the marine sponge-derived fungus Aspergillus tamarii MCCF102, along with a known analogue, terreusinone. These compounds exhibited anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and showed potential for use as natural sunscreen components due to their highly conjugated structures. However, further research is needed to determine their biosynthetic origins, as the gene sequencing and comparisons were inconclusive.

EmoMix plus : An Approach of Depression Detection Based on Emotion Lexicon for Mobile Application

Ran Li, Yuanfei Zhang, Lihua Yin, Zhe Sun, Zheng Lin, Peng Fu, Weiping Wang, Gang Shi

Summary: Emotion lexicon is an essential resource for text emotion analysis. Previous studies have primarily focused on positive and negative classification, paying less attention to fine-grained emotion classification, particularly in the context of depression. Researchers have used lexicon-based methods to find that individuals with depression express more negative emotions on social media. While emotional characteristics are effective features for detecting depression, traditional emotion lexicons have limitations in detecting depression and fail to include many depression-related words. Therefore, this study constructs a depression emotion lexicon to further investigate the differences between healthy users and individuals with depression, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the constructed depression lexicon in classifying users with depression.

High-Efficiency Synthesis of Carbon-Bridged Dimers via Bioinspired Green Dimerization Involving Aldehydes

Zhi Liu, Shupeng Yin, Rongxin Zhang, Weiming Zhu, Peng Fu

Summary: A simple, green, and efficient method for the dimerization of nucleophiles with aldehydes in water at room temperature has been developed, achieving high yields without the need for organic solvents or catalysts. This reaction has been used to build a small library of carbon-bridged dimers for bioactivity screening, as well as for synthesizing anticoagulant drugs and natural products. Additionally, the reaction has been applied to the removal of formaldehyde in water.

Xianyin Qi, Zhen Yang, Shengwei Wang, Peng Fu

Summary: In this study, sandstones and mudstones from deep tight reservoirs were used as research objects to investigate the mechanical damage characteristics of layered composite rocks. Similar material model tests were conducted to prepare layered composite rocks. Uniaxial compression tests were performed, and physical and mechanical parameters such as strength and elastic modulus were obtained using the AE and DIC systems. The study revealed a three-stage damage process of layered composite rocks under uniaxial loading and identified the deformation characteristics of the rocks.
