Summary: We report two Zn(ii)-terpyridine coordination polymers for photoredox reactions. One coordination polymer can activate molecular O-2 in air for photooxidation of organic substrates without external additives, and can also selectively reduce CO2 to CO. The other coordination polymer exhibits no catalytic activity in aerobic photooxidation of organic substrates and shows a lower CO yield in photoreduction of CO2. Spectroscopic and photoelectrochemical studies reveal the superior photocatalytic performance of the former coordination polymer due to its longer-lived photoexcited state, efficient charge separation, and stable active sites.

Summary: A highly efficient strategy has been developed for the direct thiolation of phenols under transition metal-free and solvent-free conditions. The reactions are operationally simple and employ air as an ideal oxidant, providing mono- and dithiolation products in good to excellent yields under basic conditions. This method tolerates a broad range of aryl thiols and arenes, making it especially applicable for large-scale synthesis.

Summary: Type I photostable photosensitizing assemblies of DPZ-TPY have been developed using phenazine as a strong acceptor and terpyridine groups as a weak acceptor. The as-prepared DPZ-TPY assemblies exhibit sufficient excited state potential to catalyse the synthesis of symmetrical azoaromatics through direct regulated oxidation of anilines in excellent yields (93%), without the formation of over-oxidized product. Consequently, DPZ-TPY assemblies also catalyse the formation of unsymmetrical azoaromatics starting from hydrazobenzenes under mild reaction conditions. The potential of DPZ-TPY assemblies to catalyse the gram-scale synthesis of azobenzene demonstrates their real-time application.

Summary: The S(H)2 mechanism has been utilized in the synthetic formation of organic molecules to create quaternary sp(3)-carbon centers. The mechanism involves distinguishing between primary and tertiary carbons to form S(H)2 bonds and generating radical classes simultaneously from abundant functional groups using photocatalysis.

Summary: This study achieved alpha-selective Csp3-H bond functionalization of primary aliphatic alcohols with 1,4-naphthoquinones, resulting in Csp2-Csp2 coupled products driven by blue-LED light under catalyst, metal, base, and reagent-free conditions. The transformation involved the cleavage of three C-H bonds (two sp3-C-H and one sp2-C-H) and one O-H bond, leading to the formation of fluorescent 2-acylated 1,4-naphthohydroquinones.

Summary: An iron-catalyzed direct aerobic alpha,beta-dehydrogenation of carbonyls has been reported using tert-butyl nitrite and N-hydroxyphthalimide as the co-catalyst system. This method allows for the production of a wide range of lactams, flavanones, lactone, and thiochromen-4-one in high yields without the need for extra transition metal reagents.

Summary: In this study, a recyclable catalyst, Cu-doped carbon nitride (Cu-CN), was developed as a Cu-photo dual catalytic system. The heterogeneous CN-Cu catalyst can be used for direct alpha-alkynylation of tertiary amines using air as an oxidant, resulting in high yields of diverse propargylamines. The endogenous proximity and synergistic effect between Cu and the photocatalytic center in CN-Cu significantly enhance the Cu-photo dual catalytic activity, improving reaction efficiency and selectivity. Remarkably, this heterogeneous catalyst exhibits high chemical stability and can be recycled at least five times without loss of activity.

Summary: This study reports the first Fe-II-catalyzed aerobic biomimetic oxidation of amines, which involves multiple electron transfer steps and is inspired by biological oxidation in the respiratory chain. The use of two coupled catalytic redox systems helps lower the energy barrier and improve the selectivity of the oxidation reaction. Various primary and secondary amines were successfully oxidized in air to their corresponding aldimines or ketimines in good to excellent yield.
