The development of rhenium( I) chemistry has been restricted by the limited structural and electronic variability of the common pseudo-octahedral products fac-[ReX(CO)(3)L-2] (L-2 = alpha-diimine). We address this constraint by first preparing the bidentate bis(imino)pyridine complexes [(2,6-{2,6-Me2C6H3N=CPh}(2)C5H3N) Re(CO)(3)X] (X= Cl 2, Br 3), which were characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic means, and then converting these species into tridentate pincer ligand compounds, [(2,6-{2,6-Me2C6H3N=CPh}(2)C5H3N)Re(CO)(2)X] (X= Cl 4, Br 5). This transformation was performed in the solid-state by controlled heating of 2 or 3 above 200 degrees C in a tube furnace under a flow of nitrogen gas, giving excellent yields (>= 95%). Compounds 4 and 5 define a new coordination environment for rhenium( I) carbonyl chemistry where the metal center is supported by a planar, tridentate pincer-coordinated bis(imino) pyridine ligand. The basic photophysical features of these compounds show significant elaboration in both number and intensity of the d-pi* transitions observed in the UV/Vis spectra relative to the bidentate starting materials, and these spectra were analyzed using time-dependent DFT computations. The redox nature of the bis(imino) pyridine ligand in compounds 2 and 4 was examined by electrochemical analysis, which showed two ligand reduction events and demonstrated that the ligand reduction shifts to a more positive potential when going from bidentate 2 to tridentate 4 (+160 mV for the first reduction step and +90 mV for the second). These observations indicate an increase in electrostatic stabilization of the reduced ligand in the tridentate conformation. Elaboration on this synthetic methodology documented its generality through the preparation of the pseudo-octahedral rhenium( I) triflate complex [(2,6-{2,6-Me2C6H3N=CPh}(2)C5H3N)Re(CO)(2)OTf] (7, 93% yield).

Summary: This study achieved regioselective C2 arylation of indoles, benzothiophene, and benzofuran without directing group using affordable Pd NPs and NHC-Pd@MNPs catalyst. The reusable catalyst efficiently produced C2 arylated heterocycles in good to excellent yield, with potential for gram-scale synthesis. The reaction mechanism was supported by control experiments and literature precedents.

Summary: Diatomic C-2 is a highly reactive species that has been stabilized and studied using a specific ligand method, despite being difficult to isolate in the condensed phase in the past. Experimental and quantum chemical analysis showed that both carbon atoms of this complex have carbene character and exhibit specific reactivity.

A Bis-(carbone) Pincer Ligand and Its Coordinative Behavior toward Multi-Metallic Configurations

Summary: Divalent carbon(0) species, carbones, with two lone pairs of electrons have been prepared in this study. The first known stable and isolable free bis-(carbone) pincer framework was synthesized, which serves as an effective scaffold for forming monometallic and trinuclear heterometallic complexes. Quantum-theoretical analyses showed that the stability of these complexes is mainly attributed to the four lone pairs of electrons within the bis-(carbone) framework, rather than metal-metal interactions.

Reactive Dicarbon as a Flexible Ligand for Transition-Metal Coordination and Catalysis

Ming-Chun Wu, Yu-Fu Liang, Titel Jurca, Glenn P. A. Yap, Tsz-Fai Leung, Tiow-Gan Ong

Summary: The successful preparation of bottleable phosphine-stabilized dicarbon (PDC) molecules, which possess strong sigma-donor and weak pi-acceptor properties, is reported in this study. Steric analysis reveals similar steric volume to conventional IMes carbene, but the PDCs show dynamic steric flexibility depending on the metal complexes and catalytic reaction environment. The catalytic utility of the PDC framework is demonstrated through Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and reductive coupling reaction of aldehyde and alkyne, with an important secondary interaction between PDC and metal complexes playing a critical role.

Coupling of Heteroarene and Arenol via Nickel-Catalyzed C-H/C-OH Activation

Chen-Hsun Hung, Ting-Hsuan Wang, Glenn P. A. Yap, Joon Ching Juan, Tiow-Gan Ong

Summary: This study presents a Ni-catalyzed heteroarene C-H/arenol C-OH coupling reaction without the need for strong Lewis-acid additive and low atom-economy protecting reagent. A range of arenols and heteroarenes can be effectively catalyzed using an in-situ activating reagent of pivalic anhydride. Mechanistic studies and identification of intermediates have been conducted to understand the nature of the catalytic reactions.

Binuclear Macrocyclic Silver(I) Complex of a Bis(carbone) Pincer Ligand: Synthesis and Application as a Carbone-Transfer Agent

Bamlaku Semagne Aweke, Cheng-Han Yu, Jiun-Shian Shen, Sheng Wang, Glenn P. A. Yap, Wen-Ching Chen, Tiow-Gan Ong

Summary: In this study, a carbone-transfer agent Ag-I complex of a bis(carbone) pincer ligand was synthesized, which eliminated the requirement for isolating the free ligand. The complex was efficiently used to transfer the ligand to other transition metals. This approach has potential for isolating metal complexes of carbone ligands, which has been challenging due to the reactivity and sensitivity of free carbones.
