The objectives of this work are to demonstrate facile routes to 3-D star materials with octa- and hexadecafunctionality to provide new nanoconstruction tools for the synthesis of new types of stars, dendrimers, and hyperbranched molecules or for the assembly of novel nanocomposites. A further objective is to identify novel properties inherent in the resulting new Compounds. Octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS, [VinyISiO(1.5)](8)) with perfect 3-D or cubic symmetry is elaborated through metathesis with substituted styrenes to produce a series of RStyrenylOS compounds. The p-BrStyrenylOS compound is then further reacted with other sets of p-substituted styrenes via Heck coupling to produce a set of R'VinyIStilbeneOS compounds. The R' = NH2 compound is then reacted with 3,5-dibromo or dinitrobenzoyl chloride to produce hexadecafunctional 3-D stars. These synthetic methods provide perfect single core and then core-shell 3-D stars including in the third generation branch points such that these molecules can be used for the synthesis of new dendrimers or hyperbranched molecules. Further, the first sets of materials are fully conjugated. Investigation of the UV-vis absorption, photoluminescence, and two-photon absorption properties of the R'VinyIStilbeneOS compounds, especially where R' = NH2, reveals exceptional red-shifts (120 nm), charge-transfer behavior, and excellent two-photon absorption properties that may suggest that the silica core serves the role of electron acceptor in the system and interacts equally with all eight organic moieties. This observation may imply 3-D conjugation through the core.

Size-Dependent Light Harvesting from Nonthermalized Excited States of Gold Clusters

Kyunglim Pyo, Sang Myeong Han, Hongmei Xu, Sukanya Saha, Guda Ramakrishna, Dongil Lee

Summary: The study investigated the size-dependent energy harvesting from nonthermalized, upper excited states of glutathione-protected gold clusters, showing that the upper excited-state energy can be efficiently harvested by an energy acceptor attached to the clusters. This opens up a new avenue for energy harvesting from nonthermalized upper excited states of gold clusters that would otherwise be lost as heat.

Summary: Advancements in organic materials for devices like OLEDs, OFETs, and photovoltaics have shown great innovation potential. This research focuses on synthesizing SQ-based oligomers cross-linked by dibromo-aromatic linkers to explore their photophysical properties, using techniques such as UV/vis, fluorescence, FTIR, and TGA for characterization and understanding excited state dynamics. The study also investigates potential energy transfer and charge transfer within the materials, revealing short-range communication between moieties and significant thermal stability and solution processability of the SQ backbone in achieving energy transfer.

Pyrene-Functionalized Fluorescent Nanojars: Synthesis, Mass Spectrometric, and Photophysical Studies

Melanie M. Mitchell, Vageesha W. Liyana Gunawardana, Guda Ramakrishna, Gellert Mezei

Summary: This study presents the synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of pyrene-functionalized fluorescent nanojars. The fluorescence of pyrene is significantly quenched when attached to nanojars, indicating a strong contribution from the paramagnetic Cu2+ ions. Different types of quenching mechanisms were observed depending on how the pyrene is attached to the nanojars.
