The continuous flow reaction technique has been applied to the photocyclization of 1,2-diarylethenes, the so-called Mallory reaction, to afford phenacenes in high chemical yields and efficiencies (114-288 mg h(-1)). The present technique will allow us to produce several grams of phenacenes at a time.

Solid-state photoluminescence of biaryls: Relationship between photophysical feature and crystal structure

Minoru Yamaji, Hideki Okamoto, Kenta Goto, Fumito Tani

Summary: Advancements in spectrophotometric apparatuses have allowed for the determination of fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes of emissive compounds in both solution and solid state. This study found that biaryls composed of naphthyl, phenanthryl, and pyrenyl moieties exhibit solid-state photoluminescence in the visible wavelength region at room temperature. The fluorescence quantum yields of the studied biaryls in solid state were found to be higher than those of the parent chromophores in solution, with some showing solid-state emission spectra in longer wavelength regions than in solution. Crystallographic analysis results were used to discuss the relationship between crystal packing and emission features in the solid state.

Evaluation of Effective Field-Effect Mobility in Thin-Film and Single-Crystal Transistors for Revisiting Various Phenacene-Type Molecules

Yanting Zhang, Ritsuko Eguchi, Shino Hamao, Hideki Okamoto, Hidenori Goto, Yoshihiro Kubozono

Summary: This study provides a precise evaluation of the field-effect mobility mu in organic thin-film and single-crystal FETs using a new indicator called effective field-effect mobility mu(eff). The FET performance based on mu(eff) values is discussed, showing that mu(eff) values of single-crystal FETs are consistent with previous mu values, while mu(eff) values of thin-film FETs are lower due to a high absolute threshold voltage.

Solvent-dependent fluorescence behaviour of imide-fused [n]phenacenes (n=3, 5, 7)

Keito Nose, Kaito Yoshioka, Minoru Yamaji, Fumito Tani, Kenta Goto, Hideki Okamoto

Summary: Imide-fused [n]phenacenes (nPDIs, n = 3, 5, 7) were synthesized and their electronic features were investigated. nPDIs exhibited two reduction waves due to the formation of radical ions and dianions. 3PDI showed blue fluorescence independent of solvent polarity, while 5PDI and 7PDI displayed solvent-dependent fluorescence due to intramolecular charge transfer. The spectral features were analyzed using the Lippert-Mataga relationship and theoretical calculations.

Summary: In this study, we synthesized radioexcitable luminescent polymer dots (P-dots) doped with heteroleptic tris-cyclometalated iridium complexes that emit red, green, and blue light. We investigated the luminescence properties of these P-dots under X-ray and electron beam irradiation, revealing their potential as new organic scintillators.

Mesolysis of an asymmetric diphenyldisulfide radical anion studied by γ-ray and pulsed-electron radiolyses

Minoru Yamaji, Sachiko Tojo, Tetsuro Majima, Mamoru Fujitsuka

Summary: The mesolytic profiles of (4-cyanophenyl)(4'-methoxyphenyl)disulfide were investigated using gamma-ray and pulsed-electron radiolysis. It was found that upon mesolysis of the radical anion, the methoxythiyl radical was formed through intramolecular electron transfer. The activation energy, frequency factor, bond dissociation energy, bond length, and charge distribution in the radical anion were determined and the substituent effects were discussed.

Summary: Dibenzo[n]phenecenes (DBnPs, n = 5-7) were conveniently synthesized through Mallory photocyclization. The effective mobilities of single-crystal field-effect transistors of DBnPs were evaluated, showing that C-2h-symmetrical DB6P performs better than C-2v-symmetrical DB5P and DB7P.

Fabrication of ring oscillators using organic molecules of phenacene and perylenedicarboximide

Summary: Organic field-effect transistors can be used in RFID tags and flat-panel displays. The study compared two ring oscillators using different FETs and introduced a low-voltage operation with ZrO2 as the gate dielectric material. The higher mobility in p-channel FETs compared to n-channel FETs needs to be addressed to increase oscillation frequency.
