Summary: Pinus pinaster forestry has a significant impact on the national economy in Portugal, but oleoresin production has decreased due to competition from low-cost producers in other countries. The chemical composition of rosin derived from Pinus pinaster in Portugal is consistent regardless of forest location, with abietic acid and dehydroabietic acid as the major components.

Summary: Control of liver fluke infections is a significant challenge in the livestock sector due to drug resistant parasites. This study evaluated the anthelmintic activities of chemically modified abietic acid analogues against F. hepatica and found moderate activity in one analogue, but it also showed toxicity to mammalian cells. Therefore, further medicinal chemistry improvements are needed to consider these analogues as potential anthelmintics against liver fluke pathogens.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of new cationic triphenylphosphonium amphiphilic conjugates of glycerolipid type as antitumor agents. These conjugates target mitochondria and can be used for mitochondrial delivery systems. The introduction of terpenoid fragments enhances the cytotoxicity towards tumor cells, including breast carcinoma and prostate adenocarcinoma.

Summary: Amino acid-based ionic liquids exhibit specific properties in thermal stability, heat capacity, antimicrobial activity, and cytotoxicity. It was found in the study that amino acid-based anions can reduce the thermal stability of mono and dicationic AAILs, and AAILs with more carbon chains have lower glass transition temperature.

Summary: Cancer cells have higher proliferation rates and increased demand for amino acids compared to normal cells, which has been exploited for the development of anticancer drugs like L-asparaginase. Additionally, L-lysine alpha-oxidase, an enzyme of L-amino acid oxidase family, has been studied as a potential antineoplastic agent.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of combining the LAT1 inhibitor nanvuranlat with cytotoxic anticancer drugs. The results showed that nanvuranlat in combination with various cytotoxic anticancer drugs significantly inhibited the growth of pancreatic cancer cells, with gemcitabine showing the highest combination effect. Moreover, nanvuranlat also demonstrated growth inhibition in pancreatic and biliary tract cancer cells.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a highly lethal malignancy with limited treatment options, making the development of targeted anticancer drugs crucial. Dehydroabietic acid (DAA) has been found to inhibit gastric cancer cell proliferation by downregulating survivin expression, showcasing its potential as a novel anticancer agent for gastric cancer.

Summary: High-cationic biologically active peptides, termed Nigellothionins, were isolated from black cumin seeds and classified as class I thionin subfamily members. These peptides play a role in plant innate immunity and exhibit antifungal properties. Nigellothionins show potential as natural compounds for antifungal and anti-proliferative applications based on their cytotoxic and antifungal activities.

Summary: The bioactivities of pristine chitosan are weak compared with commercial chemicals, hindering its application in food packaging and preservation. By modifying chitosan with dehydroabietic acid (DHA), a safe and biologically derived fruit preservative with excellent antifungal properties can be obtained. The antifungal activities of the modified chitosans against Penicillium digitutim and Penicillium italicum were investigated, showing that the DHA conjugated at C-6 with a free amino group at C-2 exhibited the strongest antifungal effect.

Summary: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that predisposes women to metabolic disturbances. Recent research suggests that alterations in amino acid profiles may be indicative of metabolic disorders. This study found elevated levels of aromatic amino acids in PCOS women, and significant differences in amino acid concentrations between metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity subgroups of PCOS women.

Summary: This study determined the vapor-liquid equilibrium data of the systems of p-cymene and (-)-beta-caryophyllene, as well as p-cymene, (-)-beta-caryophyllene, and dehydroabietic acid. The results showed that the addition of dehydroabietic acid significantly affected the separation of p-cymene and (-)-beta-caryophyllene. The NRTL model was found to be the most suitable for predicting the behavior of the system based on the experimental data.
