Coordination of Mes(2)PC(=CHPh)AltBu(2) to metal chlorides has been studied. Bridging P -> M-Cl -> Al coordinations were observed with Rh and Pd fragments, while chloride abstraction systematically occurred with gold. The resulting zwitterionic complexes have been fully characterized and analyzed by DFT calculations.

Coupling Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction with Thermocatalysis Enables the Formation of a Lactone Monomer

Louise Ponsard, Emmanuel Nicolas, Ngoc Huan Tran, Sarah Lamaison, David Wakerley, Thibault Cantat, Marc Fontecave

Summary: A system coupling high-pressure CO2 electrolysis with thermal catalysis using high-pressure CO has been developed to convert CO2 into beta-butyrolactone, achieving a high reaction yield. This strategy enables the production of lactones from CO2 for polyester synthesis, expanding the range of chemicals derived from CO2.

Understanding Cu(ii)-based systems for C(sp3)-H bond functionalization: insights into the synthesis of aza-heterocycles

Marc Camats, Isabelle Favier, Sonia Mallet-Ladeira, Daniel Pla, Montserrat Gomez

Summary: In this study, imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine heterocycles were successfully synthesized via Cu(II)-mediated functionalization of alpha '-C(sp(3))-H bonds of pyridinylaldimines and subsequent cyclization. The strategy utilized the directing ability of heteroleptic aldimine and pyridine groups in the substrate to selectively functionalize alpha '-methylene groups over distant methyl or methylene groups. The observed correlation between the nature of anionic ligands bonded to copper and the chemoselectivity of the C(sp(3))-H activation process suggests a concerted metalation-deprotonation pathway prior to cyclization.

Metal-Free Catalytic Hydrogenolysis of Silyl Triflates and Halides into Hydrosilanes

Gabriel Durin, Albane Fontaine, Jean-Claude Berthet, Emmanuel Nicolas, Pierre Thuery, Thibault Cantat

Summary: The metal-free catalytic hydrogenolysis of silyl triflates and halides to hydrosilanes is achieved using arylborane Lewis acids as catalysts. The catalyst acts as a Frustrated Lewis Pair and is able to split H-2 and generate a boron hydride intermediate capable of reducing (pseudo)halosilanes. This metal-free organocatalytic system competes with metal-based catalysts and enables the formation of a variety of hydrosilanes at room temperature in high yields under low hydrogen pressure.

Catalytic Carbonylation of Acrylic Acid to Succinic Anhydride

Marie-Helene Pietraru, Nicolas Lentz, Louise Ponsard, Emmanuel Nicolas, Thibault Cantat

Summary: In order to reduce our reliance on fossil feedstock, alternative sources for polymeric materials have been sought in recent years. This study presents a new approach to the formation of a useful monomer for polyesters, succinic anhydride, through the catalytic carbonylation of bio-sourced acrylic acid. The use of an Earth-abundant metal catalyst, [Co-2(CO)(8)], along with a bidentate ligand, 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane (dcpe), and H-2, successfully tackles the challenging carbonylation of unsaturated carboxylic acids.

Summary: This study presents the design and synthesis of sulfated disaccharide inhibitors based on IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S), which showed potent inhibition of Sulf-2. The results suggest that IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S) is the shortest fragment size required for effective inhibition of Sulfs, and a trisulfated disaccharide is identified as the minimal fragment size of heparan sulfate for effective endosulfatase inhibition.

Reductive cyclodimerization of chalcones: exploring the self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrosynthesis

Mauro Garbini, Andrea Brunetti, Riccardo Pedrazzani, Magda Monari, Massimo Marcaccio, Giulio Bertuzzi, Marco Bandini

Summary: The self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrolysis was found to be helpful in a multistage chemo- and diastereoselective electrochemically promoted cyclodimerization of chalcones. Through a series of reductive events, densely functionalized cyclopentanes with five contiguous stereocenters were obtained (25 examples, yields up to 95%, dr values up to >20:1). Further experimental and electrochemical investigations indicated the crucial role of dynamic kinetic resolution of the aldol intermediate in the reaction mechanism.
