Summary: In this study, an artificial DNAzyme composed of cobalt-protoporphyrin IX (CoPP) and G-quadruplex DNA was constructed to catalyze photo-induced H2 production. The G-quadruplex DNA significantly enhanced the photocatalytic H2 production for CoPP, and the DNAzyme exhibited an optimal acid-base equilibrium with a pKa value of 7.60 +/- 0.05, which is attributed to the balance between Co(III)-H- and Co(I) states. These findings demonstrate the potential of using DNAzymes for direct conversion of solar energy to H2 from water.

Summary: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is an attractive non-invasive therapy with good penetration depth, but tumor hypoxia limits its effectiveness. A novel oxygen-enhanced protein nanosonosensitizer system was designed using disulfide reconfiguration to alleviate tumor hypoxia and enhance SDT efficiency. This system combines the oxygen-carrying ability of hemoglobin and the tumor-targeting property of human serum albumin, generating singlet oxygen under US irradiation for oxidative damage to tumor cells.

Summary: Painful diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, and current treatments have limitations. This study investigated the effects of a HO-1 inducer, CoPP, on a mouse model of type 2 diabetes. The results showed that CoPP has antihyperglycemic and antiallodynic effects, as well as potent antioxidant, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties in the central nervous system of type 2 diabetic mice.

Summary: The study demonstrates that clinically used kinase inhibitors can enhance the application of aminolevulinic acid (ALA) in tumor fluorescence imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Among the kinase inhibitors tested, lapatinib showed the most significant enhancement in PpIX fluorescence and PDT response, particularly in tumors with high ABCG2 activity, suggesting its potential for therapeutic enhancement in combination with ALA.

Summary: A mild and selective hydropyridylation method for dienes was reported, allowing for traceless coupling of dienes on a wide range of pyridine substrates. The method showed good functional group tolerance, making it suitable for late-stage functionalization. The mechanistic pathway involved non-reversible hydrogen atom transfer, resulting in a reaction that was uniquely selective for dienes in the presence of other olefins.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular basis of low protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) production in the uterus of a white eggshell phenotype in Japanese quails, using transcriptome analysis and genetic linkage analysis. The results showed that several genes involved in heme biosynthesis, including ALAS1, HEPHL1, and PITX3, were specifically upregulated in the wild-type uterus and downregulated in the mutant. Further biochemical analysis indicated that the restricted availability of 5'-aminolevulinic acid is the main cause of low PPIX production. These findings suggest that uterus-specific transcriptional regulation of heme-biosynthesis-related genes plays an important role in eggshell pigment production in Japanese quails.

Summary: Photosynthetic organisms have adapted to extreme environments, such as deserts and poles, yet the proteins involved in photosynthesis are highly conserved. A new strain of cyanobacteria was isolated from the Sonoran Desert, and its photosystem I structure and characteristics were studied. Spectroscopic analysis revealed changes in pigment absorption, supporting the idea that unique structural features in photosynthetic complexes can impact spectroscopic properties and help organisms thrive in different environments.

Summary: This study characterizes synthetic cobalt complexes as redox mediators for PSI-based biophotovoltaic devices and demonstrates their stability and effectiveness in organic solvents. The research shows evidence of direct electron transfer from cobalt complexes to PSI, leading to photocurrent generation. The findings suggest the potential for fine-tuning redox active species to interact with biological partners for the development of low cost, carbon-neutral energy production in the future.

Summary: This study presents the design and synthesis of sulfated disaccharide inhibitors based on IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S), which showed potent inhibition of Sulf-2. The results suggest that IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S) is the shortest fragment size required for effective inhibition of Sulfs, and a trisulfated disaccharide is identified as the minimal fragment size of heparan sulfate for effective endosulfatase inhibition.

Summary: The self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrolysis was found to be helpful in a multistage chemo- and diastereoselective electrochemically promoted cyclodimerization of chalcones. Through a series of reductive events, densely functionalized cyclopentanes with five contiguous stereocenters were obtained (25 examples, yields up to 95%, dr values up to >20:1). Further experimental and electrochemical investigations indicated the crucial role of dynamic kinetic resolution of the aldol intermediate in the reaction mechanism.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of functionalized benzo[a]phenazines and indazolo[2,3-a]quinolines was achieved through Rh(III)-catalyzed oxidative annulation of 2-arylquinoxalines and 2-aryl-2H-indazoles with allyl alcohols. The method showed a wide substrate scope, excellent functional group tolerance, good to high yields of annulated products, and the capability for scaled-up synthesis. A tentative mechanism of the annulation reaction was proposed based on a preliminary mechanistic investigation.
